Studies prove that the built-in mechanics of the ant's neck allows it to lift a weight of up to 5,000 times (!) its body weight.

Sables at grass height: in close observations, the researchers did "reverse engineering" - that is, they looked at the ant as their own mechanical assembly, and built an artificial mechanical model that exactly mimics the structure of the ant - both in terms of the materials it is made of and in terms of the ability of its limbs to move.

Studies prove that the built-in mechanics of the ant's neck allows it to lift a weight of up to 5,000 times (!) its body weight.
In the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Ohio University, where they decided to investigate the ability of an ant to lift loads, they initially estimated that an ant could lift a weight approximately 1,000 times greater than its own body weight.
But they were wrong…. The research proved that it is 5,000 times!!!!!

In close observations, the researchers did "reverse engineering" - that is, they looked at the ant as their own mechanical assembly, and built an artificial mechanical model that exactly mimics the structure of the ant - both in terms of the materials it is made of and in terms of the ability to move its organs.

To investigate the structure that allows the ant to carry such a weight, the researchers took X-rays of the ants, in which they discovered that the ant's neck is made up of a soft tissue structure, connected in a special way to the hard skeleton of the ant's head and body. The special connection produces a kind of friction, which ultimately reduces the load created on the ant's neck, which actually serves as a pivot for the lifting operation.

Later on in the research, it turned out that the hard and light structure of the ant allows it to use a minimum of force to lift its own weight, so that most of the ant's power is free for the subject of lifting (compared to humans, for example, a large part of their power is used to move their own weight).

These discoveries are actually the opposite of what most robot developers actually implement. They build rigid and strong robots, therefore also heavy (a lot of iron...) in order to be able to lift a weight that is significantly greater, relatively, than their own weight.

After such a discovery, the task of the researchers is to develop a robot, which will include an imitation of the built-in mechanics of the ant's neck, in order to achieve the same weight-bearing capacity.
The ant is another case where nature proves to us that even in a basic mechanical concept, the efficiency that exists in creatures in a natural way, can be a model for what engineers should think about.

  1. There are people who eliminate the force of gravity with the help of meditation and rise in the air when arms and legs are folded. Is there a scientific solution to this? There are cases where people in stressful or combat situations have performed a superhuman task. Looking back . It is possible that it is not only about power, but about the power of thought. A point for thought.

  2. Something here doesn't make sense.
I don't know what the weight of the ant is, but let's say its weight is a tenth of a gram.
    0.1*5000
    =
    500 mg.
Has anyone ever seen an ant lift something approaching half a kilo?

I would appreciate it if one of the editors would check the data and give an answer
    Thank you

  3. 1. I don't want to be petty, but the title should be "studies show..." There is no proof in science (but the evidence is enough to convince us).

    2. Is there evidence that ants lift such weights, or are these just analytical models (see note #1)?

[Moses, gravity is also the constant work of God (which those who know Han - this is nature itself) and there is no difference between it and evolution.]

  4. Intelligent planning in all its glory
No matter what scientists say, how will they explain that such a thing was created from a spring?
    Only God has the answers!!
