When I lifted the cover over me I realized what it is to be blind who cannot see what is in front of him and requires training to operate his walking stick and which for him or her (the use of the masculine is for convenience purposes only) all life is a maze, not just a small room in the exhibition complex in the nation's buildings .

The blind will soon be given the opportunity to feel the world around them up to a distance of five meters, thanks to the development of a group headed by Prof. Amir Amadi from the Hebrew University, which was presented as part of an exhibition of innovative developments of the Hebrew University in the Nation Buildings in Jerusalem at the same time as the President's Conference.

According to Amadi Shalva in his doctoral students Shahar Meidenbaum Sami Avud and Shlomo Hanasi, a quarter to a third of the brain is dedicated to vision, we examine in the laboratory what happens to the millions of neurons dedicated to vision in the state of blindness. We also develop aids for the blind. Today we present a device that should replace the white guide stick. The current cane has disadvantages - the blind person runs into people and doesn't know it until he gets hurt. A second disadvantage of the current cane is that the blind person can sense things a meter away that are on the floor and requires a learning process and a teacher who teaches the blind person to use the cane. "

Prof. Amadi did not say what technology the device works on but says that it turns the blind into bats or dolphins - the device in the hands of the blind person sends a signal and receives accurate information about the distance. It can sense 5-10 meters depending on the sensor and can be aimed in several directions.
"We have slightly more sophisticated devices that translate the images into sounds and touch. The blind can walk into a room and know if the person is smiling or sad."

Many applications were also presented during the event - mainly produced by the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University in Rehovot, but more on that later this week.

  1. Is there more coverage of the show? There is no serious coverage in the press... only Shakira, Shakira, Shakira...

  2. If I'm not mistaken, a few weeks ago on this site there was an article about a blind man who developed spatial hearing with the help of echoes returned from tapping with a walking stick. I could not find the article

  3. The other self:
You live in a different reality.
There are blind people who "see" (without color) through touch but nothing like what you said.

  4. You don't need a device to feel the space without eyes. There are blind people who do it themselves, there are those who are also able to draw and "see" colors. Even an ordinary person who walks around for a few hours blindfolded will begin to develop spatial "vision" and if he practices enough he will also be able to read blindfolded. I have seen and experienced some of this myself.
You just need proper training and acceptance of the fact that it is possible.

  5. There is no substitute for sight, you have to grow an eye or use a camera and connect it to the optic nerve.

  6. What a beauty. Well done. What a blessing there is in science. magnificent.

  7. Apart from the intriguing title, it is not clear from what is written what this device is, how it is used, who exactly it is intended for, etc. I would love to hear more details.
