Technion researchers and Japanese researchers will jointly develop a platform for creating blood vessels and blood cells from embryonic stem cells as well as adult cells that will be reprogrammed into embryonic cells. This is the first scientific agreement signed between Japan and Israel.

Professor Yosef Itzkovich from the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion and researchers from the "Riken" research center in Japan received a joint grant of $600 from the ministries of science in Japan and Israel, for the purpose of developing the unique platform. Professor Itzkovich said that this is a historical scientific agreement and he hopes that many more agreements will follow.

"Japan is a powerhouse in the field of stem cell research and reprogramming of adult stem cells into embryonic cells," he emphasized. "Scientists are world leaders in this field and the unique platform we are developing together with the Japanese scientists will allow in the future innovative use of stem cells in humans."
