Astronomers have managed to record the sounds of the early universe and it seems that it was born not with a boom but with a soft hiss that turned into a muffled roar.
Mark Whittle from the University of Virginia analyzed the background radiation that was born 400 thousand years after the big bang. Ripples in this radiation are like sound waves traversing the universe. During the first million years the music of the universe changed from a majestic major chord to a somber, minor note.

"It was the absolutely reasonable thing to do," Prof. Whittle told the BBC. "I was somewhat surprised that someone hadn't done it by now. He collected the latest data about the background radiation in the microwave field, which comes from the time of the beginning of the universe, shortly after the big bang. They showed that the ripples in the background radiation, which are subtle variations in the density of matter, can be viewed as sound waves.
These cosmic sound waves are 30 thousand light years wide and are 55 octaves below the hearing threshold of the human ear.
In one sound the first million years of the universe are compressed into 30 seconds. The big bang therefore occurred in complete silence but the sound waves of the expansion of the universe could grow.
For the first 400 years it sounded like a scream fading to a low roar, Prof Whittle said. He believes that hearing the voice of the universe provides a unique perspective on the evolution of the universe. It brings the listener closer to the subject in a different way than a picture can do," he said.
During the expansion of the universe, a change in the frequency of sound waves occurred, the result of which is that the characteristic sound of the universe changed from a major chord to a minor chord. "When I listened to it I have to say that the universe is a bad instrument." Whittle said.
