Biochip for online blood tests

will transfer the data between the patient's computer and the doctor via the Internet

Scientists at Tel Aviv University have developed a biological-optical chip ("bio-chip") with communication capability, which decodes blood tests within minutes and displays results, via the Internet, on a computer monitor. The use of this component will allow any person to conduct a simple test at home, place the sample - the drop of blood - on the "bio-chip" and send the findings that the chip will provide via the Internet to his doctor so that he can recommend treatment.

The innovation, registered as a patent, belongs to a team from the Faculties of Engineering and Life Sciences and was created there by Prof. Shlomo Roshin and Dr. Ze'ev Weissman, in collaboration with Migel in the Upper Galilee. The research is supported by the budget of the infrastructural research programs of the Ministry of Science.

In addition to the possibility of performing a blood test in this way, the biochip is also able to provide detailed information on urine and breast milk samples. The data will refer to the chemical composition and will also allow information regarding the existence of genetic diseases, protein and hormone deficiencies.

The chip is made of glass and designed for single use. In the glass is a tiny optical sensor and it is coated with a layer of variable biological material. When the drop of blood is placed on it, changes occur in the biological material. The chip is linked to the computer with an optical fiber and a laser. Through it the results of the sampling are transmitted. The development team said that tests can be performed using the chip and in an emergency as well as during surgery - and the latest results are received within minutes.
