Is the dream of generations to find an advanced civilization in space about to finally come true? The SETI project (the acronym for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and in Hebrew - the search for intelligence from outside the earth) has been trying to locate such civilizations for many years, so far without success.
Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer of the project, claims that if there is indeed intelligent life in our galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, then the expected progress in the power of computing and in the technologies of radio telescopes, those facilities that aim at space and receive radio signals from distant sources, will lead to the fact that indeed We will discover them during the next two decades.
According to a widespread assessment among scientists, who deal with the possibility of the existence of life in the universe in general and intelligent life in particular, an advanced civilization may try to announce its existence through radio broadcasts. Shostak used a formula developed by the astronomer Frank Drake in 1961, which is an attempt to estimate the number of civilizations in our galaxy based on various parameters.
Drake's formula includes seven parameters. Among the parameters: the total number of suns in the galaxy, the relative part of the suns with planets surrounding them out of all the suns, the relative part of the planets that are a favorable place for the development of life, for a sun surrounded by planets, and the relative part of the planets where such life actually developed from All the planets that allow life.
Shutesak assumes that the trend of doubling computing power once every eighteen months, a trend that has existed for several decades, will continue until the year 2015. From this year onward, he assumes that computing power will develop at a more conservative rate - doubling once every thirty-six months.
The assumptions regarding the future pace of the development of computing power, combined with his hypothesis about the progress of the radio telescope technologies, which actually detect the signals, led him to estimate that a civilization will indeed be discovered within the next twenty years, if indeed extraterrestrial civilizations are indeed within the current range.
Although, it is possible to wonder if other civilizations in the universe (if they exist) actually use radio waves to communicate, since it is possible that their communication technologies are based on other, unknown principles. It is very possible that they are also much more advanced than ours and perhaps even beyond our reach.
And perhaps at these very moments, transmitters from distant civilizations in space reach us, but we are unable to receive them because the tools to receive them are not yet at our disposal.
