The month of September appears to be very important and decisive in which the final preparations are made for the climate conference that will be held in Glasgow (Scotland) at the end of October) UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) The main purpose of the conference will be to speed up the implementation of the decisions that were decided at KenS in Paris in 2015, decisions that established a framework and outline for the mitigation of global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time for actions towards climate change. Ahead of the conference (COP26), which is of enormous importance and fateful for the future, the UN institutions are publishing seven main sections that will outline the initiatives and actions that the participants will need to decide and approve (for everyone's information).

1 - As part of a meeting between representatives of the UN and representatives of governments and private businessmen, a call was issued for the financing of programs in the amount of 400 billion dollars.

More than 35 countries with developed economy and industry have committed to what is described as Energy Compacts, for example Denmark, France, Germany, England and other countries have committed to stop the development of coal power plants and reduce the use of coal.

Countries have pledged to immediately stop approvals for projects that will use coal.

Several countries have announced an initiative to provide clean electricity to more than a billion people.

2 - At a general conference of the United Nations, the representatives of the two largest economies, the USA and China, committed themselves to vigorous actions to mitigate the warming. The US President announced a significant increase in the budgeting of support for poor countries in the warming recession amounting to 11 billion dollars.

The President of China said that the rationing of electricity production by burning coal will be stopped worldwide and the budget will be directed to support green energy.

3 - In Africa, Climate Week was celebrated in virtual meetings held under the auspices of the Ugandan government and with the participation of 1600 representatives of governments, academic institutions, businessmen and representatives of conservation bodies, as well as representatives of the World Bank and representatives of departments from the United Nations.

The representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that about 65% of the arable lands in Africa are losing their productivity, with 45% of them subject to fallow.

While Africa's "contribution" to global warming is a tiny part, most of the vulnerable areas and those affected by floods, droughts, locust attacks and more are located in Africa.

4 - At the UN conference, Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, (the country hosting the conference) initiated an emergency conference to emphasize the need for more actions, including the budgeting of climate projects by the G20 leaders.
Johnson emphasized that "history will judge the rich nations if they fail to fulfill the commitment to 100 billion dollars every year for actions to mitigate warming and prepare for climate change."

Johnson also promised that his country would lead the environmental trend that would be a launching pad for a green revolution.

5 - Agriculture and food production "contribute" to about a third of greenhouse gas emissions, cause the loss of about 80% of biodiversity and use 70% of fresh water reserves.

Therefore, there is a need to develop sustainable food production methods which is an important part of the solution.

On September 23, the UN Food Systems Summit will convene for the first time. At the conference, leaders will be spurred on to action that will change the way food is produced, consumed and wasted.

According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United States, which is one of the largest food producers in the world, will need 10 billion dollars to change food systems and at the same time help feed residents in countries that have already exhausted their natural resources.

Many countries have announced initiatives to ensure environmental food production systems in conjunction with global warming mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

6 - Hundreds of young activists from almost 200 countries met in Milan (Italy) in protest and calling for action, a few weeks before the COP26 convention. The young people demanded more of a social and climatic conscience.

"Youth for Climate" (Youth4Climate) demanded to stop "babbling" or in their language Blah, blah, blah and act for a green economy, stop talking that sounds good without action. Referring to the commitments, the young people read:
"It's time to show the money"

"It's time to help poor and vulnerable countries from climate change"

"It's time to realize climate justice"

The young people's meeting ended with a document that will be presented to the participants of the preparatory conferences and the participants of the COP26 conference.

7 - Before every UN climate conference (COP) there are preparatory meetings where ministers have the opportunity to detail their intentions and plans.

This year, the meetings are held in Milan, where energy ministers from several countries will discuss and debate the political aspects of the gathering, this time the meeting takes place weeks after the urgent call by the United Nations for the immediate need to redouble efforts to avoid warming that will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius even at the end of this century.

Therefore, the issues that will arise in Milan will be:

  • reducing emissions
  • Financial aid to developing countries
  • Improving activity to prevent damage from climate change
  • Foundation and definition of a worldwide goal to reduce vulnerability
  • Promoting technologies that will allow reporting of needs and requirements
  • Promoting regulations and market laws that will allow countries to cooperate

So much for the preparations and announcements for the COP26 conference in Glasgow.

To this, the UN Secretary said that: "There is still a long way to go" because in order for the conference to be successful and lead to a turning point "there is a need for a combined effort to deal with the climate crisis".

I am more skeptical to add that:

There is no doubt that it is necessary to do everything to moderate the warming, but we are already in the midst of a climate crisis that manifests itself in floods, droughts, fires and natural disasters.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to prepare well in order to mitigate the impact of the crisis: infrastructure, agriculture, transportation and everything that may be damaged by natural hazards.

Above all, what I have been saying over and over again for many years, which is already being accepted in wide circles:

It is appropriate that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population - there should be control of the human population for the sake of the environment!
