Astronomers have revealed a quick recipe to create a large planet, using supercomputer calculations that try to see how gas giants can form in hundreds of years rather than millions.
Most scientists held the view that planets the size of Jupiter, the largest body in our solar system, take millions of years to separate from the massive disk of cosmic debris surrounding the young star.
However, a study published at the end of November 2002 in the journal Science shows that when the disc breaks up, the material begins to coalesce rapidly into stars the size of Jupiter.
The planets are formed in the first period of the cosmic gas and dust that can drift and tear from the nearby star, say researchers from the USA and Canada.
If giant gas planets couldn't form quickly, they probably wouldn't have formed at all, says astronomer Thomas Keen of the University of Washington, one of the authors of the scientific report. According to him, the latest studies on planets outside the solar system support this theory.
The fact that astronomers have discovered more than XNUMX Jupiter-type planets orbiting other stars outside the solar system suggests that such planets are extremely common, Keane said.
If Cain and his colleagues are correct, this means that if the large planets had not formed immediately, all the material would have been pumped into the suns.
Previously, scientists thought that so-called protoplanets, the primordial gas cloud, should rapidly coalesce into stars, but they didn't have the computing power to run a simulation that would show that, Keane said.
Supercomputers running powerful programs to track the foundation of the universe were able to perform detailed calculations showing how quickly these planets might have formed.
According to Cain, these computer models did not point to any large planets forming quickly, but they do give an indication that such a scenario could work.
