It is no coincidence that dogs are cuter than wolves, or that goats in the wild have shorter horns and friendlier manners than their wild ancestors. Researchers call these phenomena "domestication syndrome" - the idea that excluding aggression from reproduction leads to physiological changes including: drooping ears, shorter muzzles and snouts, curlier tails, paler fur, smaller brains and more.
Both the physical and the behavioral changes seem to originate from certain neural crest cells, which appear in fetuses and newborns, and have a strong resemblance to stem cells. These neural crest cells can develop into a wide variety of cells, especially the cells of the adrenal gland - which increases the "fight or flight" response - and also affects other physical features, such as the development of larger teeth and firmer ears.
Since Darwin's time, some researchers have speculated that humans domesticated themselves - we chose less aggressive and more helpful pairings, thus diverting our own evolutionary trajectory.
Relationship between social behavior and domestication
"The evidence for this is largely circumstantial," says Asif Ghazanfar, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Princeton University. "This is a very popular and exciting idea, but there is a lack of direct proof of its validity, that is, a linking link between sociable behavior and other characteristics of domestication."
To see if this theory could be placed on a more stable foundation, Ghazanfar examined marmoset monkeys. Similar to humans, these primates are very sociable and cooperative, and in addition, they have several physical markers consistent with domestication, including a patch of white fur on their foreheads, common in domesticated mammals.
How is cooperation manifested in a monkey? Other signs, says Ghazanfar, include friendly voice exchanges, caring for each other's young offspring, and sharing food.
The research team showed that the size of the patch of white fur on the marmoset monkey's forehead was closely related to the frequency with which it produced friendly vocal responses to another. This is the first series of data to show a relationship between social behavior and a physical trait that characterizes domestication in individual animals.
To show the causal relationship between a white spot and vocal behavior, the researchers examined twin monkey pups. For very short periods of time, one twin received reliable vocal feedback from a simulated parent—a computer programmed to read an adult's calls and respond to 100% of the pup's vocalizations—while the other twin heard parental responses to 10% of his own vocalizations.
The experiments were conducted for 40 minutes, day and night, for most of the first 60 days of the monkey puppies' lives. In the remaining 23 hours of the day, the monkeys were with their families.
Puppies learned to "talk" faster
In previous work, Ghazanfar and his colleagues showed that pups that received more feedback learned to speak—or, more precisely, developed their adult vocalizations—faster than their siblings. By measuring the patches of fur on the foreheads of developing monkeys, the researchers found that the rate of developing whiteness on their faces was also accelerated by parental vocal responses. Thus, a developmental relationship was observed between the color of the facial fur and vocal development - both were influenced by parents.
This connection may occur through the neural crest cells, which can develop into "fight or flight" cells and can also contribute to the part of the throat needed to produce sounds.
Studies have linked domestication to changes in vocal behavior in other species as well. Jackals selected for training changed their vocal abilities in response to the presence of people. Similarly, the Bengal finch learns and produces more complex songs and has greater song flexibility in adulthood than its wild cousins.
However, this is the first study, of any kind, that links the level of a social trait to the size of a physical sign that characterizes domestication, said the researchers, whose research findings were published in the journal Current Biology.
"If you change the rate of vocal development in marmoset monkeys, you change the rate of their fur coloration," Ghazanfar says. "This is a series of results that is both fascinating and strange!"
