Europe is developing an unmanned fighter jet

The VxWorks 653 operating system of the Wind River company, whose system also powers the Mars Spirit and Opportunity vehicles, was chosen as the operating system for the computer systems of nEUROn, a future unmanned combat aircraft (UCAV - Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle), which is currently being developed in Europe, in cooperation with several European companies.

The main goal of the nEUROn project is not to develop a military weapon, but to develop a tool for testing and demonstrating technologies, to test their maturity and effectiveness. Among the solutions that will be tested using nEUROn can be found air-ground missions, functioning as part of a centralized combat network system, planning "stealth" platforms, which are not detected by radar or infrared, and a system for the rapid and calculated release of bombs and weapons from the aircraft. Modular avionics systems, based on Wind River's real-time operating systems, will be installed in the plane.

To build the body of the plane, several European airlines joined together, such as Dassault Aviation, which is the main builder of the plane, together with the Italian company Alenia (internal weapon systems), the Swedish company SAAB (body design, avionics and fuel system), the Greek Hellenic Aerospace Industry (the rear body, the exhaust pipe and the test system), the Spanish EADS (wings, ground station and data connections) and the RUAG company from Switzerland, which is responsible for the wind tunnel tests and the weapons operation interface.

"We see more and more unmanned systems, developed by the cooperation of several international companies and different development teams, scattered around the world, to meet the complex development requirements," says Andy Fabinger, vice president of EMEA sales at Wind River Israel and the MAZ. "This complexity in development, which is increasing over time, pushes the market towards the use of "off-the-shelf components", which also include the operating system, which sits at the heart of the unmanned aircraft."

It's not pleasant to burst the bubble like that..but not at the level of sophistication of F16 in terms of the ability to arm and deal alone..but we have quite a few of them and as far as I know, we are quite powerful in this segment...of pilotless planes that carry a missile or two...great segment.
