Why is the world hungry?

The current situation where food prices are doubled is caused by many different reasons. Despite all of this, it turns out that by proper farming, a large part of the problem can be solved - at least temporarily

A field in Africa
A field in Africa

In a survey done in England, it became clear that nearly 4 (four) million tons of food are thrown into the trash every year. An organization called the "Waste & Resources Action Program" (WRAP) checked and found that every year 60% of foodstuffs are thrown away in their original packaging, of which 18% are baked goods, 18% vegetables, 18% meat and poultry (5,500 whole birds) 21% prepared meals (440,000 meals), 1.3 million yogurt packages, thousands of kilograms of potatoes, thousands of loaves of bread and rolls.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to invite the members of the organization to our area on Saturdays and holidays, so that they can see and tell how Israelis throw everything they can into their hands and mouths. The local problem is twofold, since Israelis throw away everything, when the majority is thrown into the public domain, to the beaches and the sea, to the streams and woods, to the reserves and their surroundings - every corner that was clean is dirty by our celebrants.

why? Maybe because that's how they "love the country"? Or perhaps simply because we have not yet reached the developmental stage where garbage collection containers are used, we have not yet passed the stage where people use everything around them and then migrate on, the same stage that human society was in about 70 thousand years ago. Elsewhere there are laws and regulations to overcome the basic instinctive level we are on. We also have laws and regulations... So what ?

to the body of a subject. After the Second World War, there was a fear in the world that agriculture would not be able to satisfy the food demand of the human population. The use of sophisticated processing methods, seed rotation, irrigation methods and above all the increased use of fertilizers caused a doubling of the yield of agricultural areas... The world was "saved" from famine by the "agricultural revolution".

indeed? Not exactly since the main impact was on the agricultural areas in the western world. In the countries of Southeast Asia and Africa, the price of fertilizers was expensive for the farmers and they continued to cultivate their lands with outdated methods. The combination of these factors with many other factors and especially the population explosion caused many populations to live on the brink of starvation for years. From time to time the "civilized" world would wake up to a periodic disaster that would emphasize the sad situation in which large groups/populations find themselves.

The current situation where food prices are doubled is caused by many different reasons, the rise in fuel prices, the use of food for fuel, "market games" (manipulation) by suppliers, but above all again: population explosion. Despite all of this, it turns out that by proper farming, a large part of the problem can be solved - at least temporarily.

According to the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development, a group of researchers supported by the United Nations and the World Bank, the yield of agricultural areas can be improved by Use of fine/cultivated varieties,

And above all by improving the soil, that is, using fertilizers. Growing corn that has undergone genetic treatment plus soil improvement/fertilization (in Africa) will give a yield of about 1,250 kg per acre instead of a yield of about 100 kg today. The problem is to provide farmers with fertilizers at a low price, so low that the farmer can afford the additional expense. After two growing cycles, the large crop (10 times) will prove the viability of fertilization and will allow continued financing of fertilizers.

An encouraging example comes from Malawi, until about three years ago (2005) about a third of Malawi's residents needed the distribution of food by various bodies. The country's farmers produced about 1.2 million tons of corn per year, about a third of the consumption. The president of the country initiated a program according to which every farmer received a bag of fertilizer and 2 kg of seeds for less than half the price. With the help of the initiative and the fertilizer, the farmers tripled the yield of the fields to 3.4 million tons. In two years, Malawi went from a country in need of food aid to a corn exporter. Let's remember that corn is the basic and most common food in African countries. If there was an initiative like in Malawi in the countries of East and West Africa, it can be assumed that a large part of the hungry would eat to their heart's content.

In a similar way, rice yields in Southeast Asia can be increased by using genetically improved varieties. More rice, less hungry. This is, of course, provided that the governments are able to overcome the other cause of hunger... the population explosion!

According to data collected in recent years, the natural environment of our world can sustainably support a population of two billion people. In order not to harm the natural environment, i.e. in order to allow the continuation of a proper existence, a sustainable existence for human society, society must return to a reasonable number of inhabitants, a population of the right size that will not cause the "cutting down of the branch" on which they are sitting! A human population of a size suitable for the carrying capacity of the environment!

This is not a hint, without birth control our world is expected to be flooded. We again come to the fact that the technological development of the human being precedes his instincts by about 70 thousand years. Therefore we need a system of regulations and laws that will perfect the needs and adapt them to a situation that will allow a normal life in human society. Regulations and laws are created following pressures. The pressure has been there for a long time. The installation to remove the pressure is clear, a limit of one newborn per couple, a limit that will return the human population to a natural / correct amount within two generations. (Interesting that in one country - China there is an existing installation...?)

Anyone who thinks that these are extreme / delusional things... will think of the other possibility: within a few years, wars over water, wars over food, wars over living areas, wars over resources, wars whose main impetus is... density / overpopulation will break out all over the world. True, intrasexual wars are more natural, more suitable to our instincts than regulations and laws. Therefore, the population / human society must choose, planned and voluntary control of the size of the world population, or control by self-destruction while destroying the environment, regulations or wars.

The time has come that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there will be control of the human population for the sake of the environment.

post Scriptum
In preparation for 400 B'Omer, they warned the "celebrating public" against causing fires. After LG B'Omer, we were informed of about XNUMX fires that "broke out" throughout the country. Fires don't break out, fires are started by "celebrants" for whom fire is an uncertain and therefore uncontrollable force of nature... Exactly what fire was for the "skilled man" about two million years ago...
Simultaneously with the invention of the first lighter, the lighters learned how to prevent fires. Apparently our "celebrants" have not yet reached the stage of prevention, which means once again, the lighters' technological prowess precedes their "cultural" kosher by many years...

  1. Neglecting to use a fake name is cowardice. Using many names is dishonesty - the same dishonesty revealed in your hypocritical attack on Michael. Even if you live a thousand years you will not reach his level

  2. negligence:
You are wrong and I don't need to search the site to verify this. I always treat the substance of the matter and react to a person's body only when that person attacks me personally as you did without any justification.
Turning to a history that never existed is a very typical tendency of all the mahbatim and other demagogues.

  3. Michael
Honey, I make them up according to my mood. It's a shame that there is no advanced search on the site according to different cuts and subject classifications. You could immediately check how many times you were excessively rude towards other commenters and what lexicon you used. This is not appropriate for this type of site, leave it for blogs and matchmaking sites and the like. I lashed out at you for being rude, learn to control yourself. And don't see my words as an attempt to humiliate but only good advice. You should keep your composure and calmness because no one cares about what happens here except to kill a few free minutes.

  4. negligence:
If you believe everything you said then why did you attack me?
Do you reserve the name negligence for this type of behavior to keep the other names "clean"?
I feel completely fine with meeting your requirements from the site's commenters and it seems to me that the one who exceeded them in this discussion is you (all along).

  5. Mr. Michael
Please note that neither I nor anyone has an argument with you on any subject, even if you are terribly interested in it, do it at home. My name on the site is fictitious and not permanent. I really don't care what you say or what you said or what you thought or who you are at all.
What is important in my opinion is to try to learn something from the way of thinking of others. Try to illuminate different angles of a certain matter. If someone has a way of looking at it that I didn't think of, it is for me a source of learning and not a pointless debate. Curiosity, courage to think differently, originality, consistency, seriousness, honesty, a healthy sense of humor and respect are among the things required here.

This is exactly what I meant for you to do more like for example the last topic I responded to and the connection to Consciousness
    To my father Blizovsky
The automatic filtering according to a black list is not particularly successful due to the manual update.
To perhaps build a tool that will examine the aforementioned and automatically identify serial nuisances.
At least according to an analysis of the number of responses relative to the length and an analysis of references to other respondents together with a comparison to a glossary of terms with a negative tone and the like.
Maybe you should also consider moving the site to dot-net as I currently think in PHP
    Successfully

  7. There are many articles here that invite scientific polemic and even win it.
    Just one for example:
    https://www.hayadan.org.il/toward-infinity-0703081/
I don't remember ever reading anything from Harshala's waiting in one of them and unfortunately he didn't even tell a joke.
It seems to me, however, that he has now invented a leading perpetuum by dragging us all into a pointless and therefore endless discussion.

  8. I actually remember an extensive article about the inventor of the apparently leading perfume

  9. Roy Cezana
The decline in quality, in my opinion, is manifested: in the presentation of new books in a very superficial way, more books with a polemical affinity than science in its own right. Too little deepening and expansion on the subject of the LHC. You could have brought something related to the Higgs boson for example or the expected changes in the standard model. And again too many articles on topics that provoke idle debates and invite compulsive commenters. Why don't you bring a science that invites scientific polemic to its name, such as the topic of the leading Perpetum that was developed according to his claim by a Canadian inventor and add extensions. Personally, I chose to wander the site from time to time in the past more than in recent times.

    to the cool responder
Can it be deduced from your list that you have a constant debate with almost all cultural icons. Hope you stay calm as well.

  10. The discussion started because of the "moral preaching" in the article, I actually like Assaf Rosenthal's articles, they present you with many facts and at the same time make you think a little about a number of other things that you hadn't thought about.

  11. negligence:
I don't need the attention you're giving me and in fact this whole discussion pissed me off from start to finish.
I also do a lot more off site than you ever will.
    sweet Dreams.

  12. Michael
You need attention so much that people and I among them give it to you with a smile.
Learn to smile a little and the world will see differently. Do something outside the boundaries of the site you will feel better.

  13. The cool commenter:
Just for the sake of consistency, it should be noted that according to the trip trend you described then, this discussion is again on Everest.
By the way, if you refer to the intention and not to the geography, then it seems to me that this is the predictable fate of meta-discussions, that is, discussions about discussions that start with the steam of people about other people in an undisguised attempt to gag.

  15. negligence,

Quality is indeed more important than quantity, but I see no sign that the quality of the articles on the site has decreased. In this specific article, we are talking about factual and based data (with references given in the body of the article), to which the reporter adds his own interpretation. That interpretation, whether you or I agree with it, is shared by part of the public and it is important to know it.

I hope you continue to browse the site and enjoy its contents,

    Roy.

  16. negligence:
I will teach you something about logic:
If these are the exercises you do every day it is not hard to understand how you got to where you are.

  17. negligence:
I started the exercise and suddenly I found myself kissing your lips.

  18. Michael
I will teach you an exercise that accelerates evolution.
Stand in front of the mirror and slowly bend forward until your head reaches the level of your rear. (to the left if the estrogen level has increased)
Now straighten your jaw in a release movement and grin a little at yourself. Learn to smile at yourself wider each time.
The prescription is doubled three times a day. A doctor's prescription is not necessary.

  19. By the way, I assume that the Australopithecus lives in Austropol, and if he was smart enough to drive out Harshla, then he should be given more mites than usual

  20. By the way, Harshala, when did I complain about something?
I always refer to the opinions expressed and if I do not agree with them, I give reasons to contradict them.
What are you doing? Exactly the opposite: you don't address things, you don't give reasons, you just complain (and dare to talk about the fact that others are the ones who complain) and blaspheme.
And what is bombastic about my words?
    In short - scales!

  21. Michael
You are right the "cycle" is taken away from it but it was so inviting and tempting to use it and now I also think it was justified. You have to express yourself so bombastic and so drastic and yet addicted to whining and a systematic and compulsive complainer. You are not only on your period but also permanently and permanently pregnant. It is recommended to lower the hysterical estrogen level. Hormonal test by the cash register.

  22. negligence:
I protest the violence in your response and suggest that you internalize even a little of what you demand from others.
It is interesting that your use of the word "cycle" is merely a recycling of the response that preceded yours. Is it hard for you to find your own insults?
If you don't see the war of the rabbis as a logic of crisis and if you don't notice the fact that their war in science is only a part of their war for control over your life, then the sentence I quoted is exactly right for you.

  23. The cool respondent
Really, how long does it take to wean yourself from believing in cigarettes from a woman? The problem is that you are replacing a cow with a donkey. Because from the moment of the apparent disconnection you don't stop arguing with God, with your ex, with your former boss, and with the cigarettes, not necessarily in that order. And what did you gain in the end other than wasting your time in a futile argument with your disgusting past.

  24. negligence,
I don't understand what is the connection between this article and religion and what is wrong with its presentation?
It is true that the tone of the writer is like that of a feminist in her cycle.. and it is annoying to read an article where the writer of every line pushes a depressive closure or is just nervous.
But this article in the first place is based on new facts discovered in Britain, so it cannot be said that it is not innovative.

And besides, it's not easy at all to break away from religion and blind faith, just take the example of Charles Darwin, how long it took him to stop believing in biblical creation. That is why it is not wrong to show new revelations that expose the religion to its lies and errors and its false nature, even though there are already plenty of proofs.

  25. negligence:
President John F. Kennedy once said that "the hottest places in Hell
are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintain their
    neutrality.”

President John Kennedy once said: "The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of moral crisis, maintain their neutrality."

  26. Avi Blizovsky
Maybe you should call your site "Hidaan the Ultimate Blind to the Pulsa"

  27. Avi Blizovsky
On the contrary, I suggest not to be modest but rather to announce the sound of the trumpet's voice for the extinction of non-evolutionary species. All the mahbats who are not ready to be partners in the necessary evolutionary competition and put their finger on the gift of free admission. Why do you even open your words with an apologetic tone and lecture that you have shown courage and determination in the face of the rioters by raising a declared flag to trample on those eating free meals.
But what will happen to science and knowledge if Greece sinks into the mud of polemics. You may expose your flank to a terrible pulse.

  28. Unfortunately, I still can't understand what the problem is - explain to me why the rules of the Broadcasting Authority or any other body that seeks to balance truth and lies - should apply to me?
I don't discriminate between the importance of news with scientific facts and articles that promote scientific thinking? (Provided that the facts in them are correct) What can be done, there is only one truth and with all due respect, the rabbis don't exactly trust her.

Why isn't there one place on the Israeli internet that isn't ashamed of science as it is and doesn't try to balance or lower a profile so as not to upset someone? These things will not change the fact that evolution is the only theory that explains the origin of species and that the universe is about 13.7 billion years old and not six thousand and a few other things that according to the idea you proposed we should be modest so as not to upset anyone.

  29. Roy
    Regarding your invitation to offer:
Maybe use the robotic arm operated by the monkey to automatically respond to the compulsive polemic addicts. By offering to join rehab groups and the like, maybe it will remind them to stop uncontrollable barren and empty threads.

  30. Roy Cezana
Quality versus quantity is better in my opinion. What is the point of articles such as the above that bring biased opinions of unfortunately combined with unidentified data that is quite vague in the general picture. This invites cumulative yawning and reluctance for those who used to wander here until now.
    Avi Blizovsky
Your statement in Rish Gali that the unspoken purpose of the site is to serve the sun has been enhanced to contradict the religion and its sun. alienates those interested in scientific thinking for its own sake. On the other hand, it is possible that due disclosure expressed in a headline and permanent announcement will gain a large amount of surfers of this variety.

  31. Unfortunately, in the book that came out about two years ago - Darwin's Slow Evolution, he is quoted as saying (I am bringing the meaning of things here in modern language) why bother with controversial things. You wrote such a beautiful book about the Beagle's journey and you also wrote scientific books about species of plants and animals that you conducted in-depth studies on. Go ahead, do what you're good at.
In short, it is most convenient to please the religious, this is what our governments have done for generations and in return for industrial peace we received a de facto Halacha state.

And as a matter of fact, if I don't bring the scientific side in debates between religion and science, who will? The thousands of sites of the converts? NRG (who early on interviewed ghosts of celebrities)?
I am convinced that if you follow the site, you see enough up-to-date scientific articles. There is room for both.

  32. negligence,

Some examples of articles from the last five days:
'Artificial giant trees will suck CO2 from the atmosphere'
'A new industrial process for the preparation of large compounds with a promising future'
    'Monkey brain activated robotic arm'
"The Technion researchers found a way to discover in seconds a radio frequency that pirates have taken over"
The Future of Physics and the Geneva Particle Accelerator
A series of articles about the Phoenix and its mission

So it seems to me that there is a good enough focus on science and original developments.

In any case, I see no reason to omit articles that encourage debate (some are fruitless and some are thought-provoking). On the contrary. Precisely such articles that create controversy are more interesting (assuming, of course, that their credibility is not in doubt).

As for the casual readers who like to respond provocatively, I admit that this is a problem that leads, as you say, to mostly fruitless arguments. But how to solve it? Apparently, registering users is not the way, the lesson from the last year in science is that the more provocative proofers respond in many articles under the same name. It is known that even in forums with registration the problem of 'trolls' has not been solved.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

    Roy.

  33. collect,
I agree with you that the only solution would be population limitation.

Regarding the issue of food waste: I think the number you presented, 4 million tons per year, is ridiculously low.

  34. When it is not scientifically possible to come up with even just theories
on the subject of the human soul.
For example his ability to feel pain and not just know pain.
So it's really better to hit others, it's much easier.
They don't have successful theories, but at least they try.

  35. Avi Blizovsky
I think the quality was sacrificed for the amount of new articles. I have to admit that I have not done a close inspection of the articles of Shana in recent years, but there is still a disturbing feeling regarding the quality and degree of originality of the new articles.
What is equally disappointing and has grown almost exponentially is the gallery of banal responses, the low level of expression, the compulsive dishing over and over again of the same topics through some compulsive intellectual raps. that casual readers abuse their inability to control their weakness to respond. The spectators throw peanuts to them and watch the monkeys catch them.
Aren't you tired of engaging in religion and science debates? There is a heavy feeling of returning to the days of the Inquisition and the like. The site at the beginning impressed with its originality and approach that faced forward and not backwards as it is now.
Maybe registering users will somewhat limit the low expression of the commenters and maybe not. In my opinion, if you focus on original science and omit the articles that encourage fruitless arguments, maybe the situation will be better.

  36. Who wrote the article? Abi or Assaf?
Be careful not to decrease the population size too quickly. The European countries where this started to happen naturally suffered from problems that led them to open their doors to immigration that under other conditions would have opposed it.

  37. Did you come to tell or did you come to tell?! What is all this self-righteousness and sticky moral preaching...

And regarding birth control... yes, go tell that to the cannibal Arabs - there is no doubt that you will become the star of the feast!!!
