While in the past the northern part of Alaska was surrounded by floating ice surfaces as early as October-November, in recent years it has been happening slower and later - until on November 19 this year the amount of floating ice in the area reached to a negative record of the last 40 years in which measurements were made in the area.

The late and diminishing appearance of the ice is problematic not only because it changes the texture of life in the region, but mainly because it causes accelerated warming and helps increase the effect of climate change. This happens because the white ice absorbs very little of the solar radiation that reaches it, and when the sea or land is covered with ice, most of the solar energy that reaches them is returned to space. When the surface is darker - as in the case of bare land or the surface of the sea, more solar energy is absorbed by them, increasing the warming of the earth. The diminishing ice in Alaska, its late arrival and the fact that it covers the surface of the water surrounding it for fewer months of the year causes a feedback effect - according to which the less ice there is, the more and faster warming occurs, which in turn further delays the formation of ice or melts the existing ice.
The negative record recorded this year in floating ice, combined with the higher-than-normal temperatures, caused the activation of a mechanism designed for cases in which the local measuring station detects that an artificial change has been made around it - for example in cases where there is an internal fault in the system that could disrupt the veracity of the report, or when it is moved from its place to an area where Weather conditions other than the range to which she is accustomed. In such a case, a special algorithm causes the system to stop the automatic reporting of data - so as not to transmit false data to the system and disrupt the results of the measurements.
The researchers realized what happened when on December 4th - like every 4th of the month - they went to read and analyze the data, and discovered that during the month the system stopped automatically reporting the climate data - that is, it simply decided to disqualify itself due to excessive heat.
When you look at the data and realize that the temperature measurements in the region show that the average October of the 21st century is almost 8 degrees Celsius warmer than the month of October in the 1920s, you can understand the dimensions of the enormous change that is taking place in this region.
