A skeleton of a common whale, about 12 meters long, was excavated by volunteers of the Makhmalyi association (Center for Information Research and Assistance to Marine Mammals) and researchers of the University of Haifa and it will be transferred to the university's collection where it will be assembled and displayed. In February 2007, volunteers from the army buried a common whale in the Beaver Reserve, with the aim of preserving its skeleton for study purposes at the University of Haifa. On Sunday, they arrived to remove the skeleton, first with a bulldozer and then with a shovel and a toy so as not to damage the bones. The heavy project began at 07:00 in the morning and ended at 16:00, when all the bones of the skeleton were marked and transferred to the warehouse in Nir-Etzion, where they undergo a process of cleaning by Dr. Danny Kerem and Eliana Ratner from the University of Haifa in the last step before assembly.
"During the excavation we found a piece of fishing net, which was apparently in the lung area. I don't know if this is what caused the whale's death, but of course the net should not have been there," said Dr. Oz Gofman, director of the dolphin project at the Leon Recanti Institute of Marine Studies at the University of Haifa and a fisheries inspector at the Ministry of Agriculture, who was one of the four people who lifted the The skull of the whale, weighing about 120 kg.
"We have in our collection skeletons of minke whales, but they are not complete, this is the first time we will have a complete skeleton. From a research point of view, we will now be able to study the bone density, injuries or injuries the whale suffered and of course, as our collection grows, we will be able to compare our findings to similar collections from other parts of the world", said Aviad Shinain, Chairman of the Makhmalyi Association.
When the researchers finish assembling the 12-meter-long skeleton, they will move on to their next project, which is planned for the spring period - excavating and assembling the skeleton of a 14-meter-long whale, which they buried about eight months ago.
