About 8 years ago I wrote and referred extensively to the water problem on a global scale. Since then I have referred many times to the growing lack of this important resource, in the world in general and in our immediate environment in particular. Of course I am not the only one and many times my references were based on studies and data drawn from various sources.

In June, the "Earth Summit" will be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), a conference that will deal with environmental problems and an attempt to take steps that will moderate the negative impact of the human population on the natural environment. This is a negative effect that is already clear to everyone today that its consequences for the environment and the human population are not disastrous but already a disaster that is happening.

In a report by environmental organizations on behalf of the United Nations, there is a demand that the water problem be at the top of the agenda of the Earth Summit, this is because of data that accumulates and shows an alarming situation.

In preparation for the summit in Rio, a meeting was held of a department in UNESCO, which deals with the development of water projects in the world (World Water Development). The gathering is taking place these days (from March 12) in Marseille (France) under the impending threat of a global water shortage. The development of industry, the growth of agricultural areas, the growth of urban areas and, above all, the population explosion - are placing unprecedented pressure on water sources. Despite this, hundreds of millions of people do not have access to clean drinking water, which endangers their health.

According to the report submitted to the conference, without immediate action to improve water policy management "a global disaster is imminent". Although the report contains a lot of facts, its authors claim that "the lack of reliable data about water quality and its use poses obstacles to the effort to strengthen policies and enforce regulations".
Because it is difficult to properly manage what is unknown. In order to receive data, an investment is necessary - for example, the establishment of a measuring station for the flow of a river costs about a million dollars, and on top of the initial expenditure are added ongoing operating expenses, expenses that make it difficult for poor countries. The authors of the report recommend remote monitoring of water quantities and quality, but point out that such monitoring will not be a substitute for ground measurements, for data collection in the field.

The report also focuses on the increased consumption of water for the growing and developing agricultural areas. Food production consumes more than two-thirds of the world's water output, and it is expected that due to the explosion of the (human) population, the demand for food will increase by 70% towards 2050.

The authors of the report hope that "research to optimize and increase crops and develop varieties resistant to drought conditions will help nations meet their needs while using water efficiently and economically."

The report concludes that: "Policymakers must balance the demands of agriculture and industry with the need or necessity to provide the population with clean drinking water from sustainable sources", meaning that there is a need to balance the three sectors: agriculture, industry, drinking. From the conference in Marsi, the call will be issued to the leaders who will participate in the Earth Summit in Rio: "The challenge, the dangers and the uncertainty that block the way to sustainable development, require a joint response by the international community."

And I will add again that the time has come that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population,
There will be control over the human population for the sake of the environment.

  1. Desalination is not a solution
    May 31, 2012 at 1:49 pm #

A few points that do not come up regarding the "solution" to desalination:
    1. What is done with the salting (the salt that comes out in the process and is returned in a concentrated form to the sea)
    2. How much energy (fuel) does it cost us to move water against the laws of nature (reverse osmosis)
    3. Those who operate the desalination facilities are private corporations and not government companies. Do we really want our water to be in the hands of the capitalists?
    4. Assuming that an immediate solution is needed, why did they wait so long and why are they now going into a system frenzy and building three desalination plants in addition to Ashkelon?

There are many more problematic points in solving the magic of desalination, but I recommend trying to look a little beyond the end of our noses, at least for the sake of our children.

Solutions? There are several and most of them are mentioned and require some work and some sacrifice from each of us - are we capable of this? Asimov says no, I'm a little more optimistic

  2. someone,
A world as usual drives under constraints. To gather the world's scientists to your cause, there needs to be an economic interest. Let's check which is easier to do from the following two options*:
    a) pay for expensive technology
    b) to thin out the world's population through organized violence
*These are not all the available options

  3. Your electricity source will supply water to the whole world without problems.
The caregiving era is the next era that all the inhabitants of the earth need, and for that it needed a lot of electricity to run it.
You found electricity, you found water, you found life.
The scientists of the world should be brought together for this

From the first lecture it was correct to refer to a device that produces clean water from any type of water and it is also worth examining the idea that there are many resources on earth that we do not yet know how to extract or separate from their environment. Like energy and its instructive example on aluminum in the past.
From the second lecture, which you don't refer to at all, you can learn that managing childbirth as it was done in China is dangerous to the point of being destructive. (not to mention totalitarian) and that actually in the not too distant future we will have to deal with the opposite problem of a decrease in the amount of population. which is dangerous in many respects no less than overpopulation. You will see the details in the lecture.

Regarding your response: a. A little less criticism. This is one of the most influential people in the world today in the positive sense of the word. You are a bit pessimistic. Population education is done all the time and on a global scale. There are several individual countries that follow behind you can see Hans Rosling's ted talk on this topic. If you study the subject in depth, you may not be so afraid of those extreme cultures because you will discover that they are actually a tiny minority.
Ignorance will be eradicated and you will come to Zion the Redeemer.

He takes a number of accepted and well-known things, the marketing means of the media world, our reactions when exposed to danger, and more. Accelerated development in our time in science and technology, real discounting of advanced technological equipment over the years, and more. To this he adds the tone of a preacher, the conviction of an experienced businessman and marketing man.
I appreciate that he dreams of running for St.

He underestimated the danger that would exist with regards to global warming, damage to the natural balance of nature and the crazy arms race which, unfortunately, terrorist organizations and third world countries have joined.

But that is not the issue here, that is not the question. Is the earth capable of containing an infinite number of people? Even if technology and science and medicine fly forward and up. If the answer to that is negative, the only solution I believe is birth control like in China, I know that we will find an inverse relationship between the level of education and the number of births. You are right, only that it cannot be implemented on a worldwide scale.

See the enormous proliferation that exists in peoples, nationalities and tribes with extreme beliefs around the world.
This is a very great mitzvah for them to reproduce, there is also a promise and a clear goal for every believer in the Torah or the New Testament and the like, "Be kind to me and I will put your seed like the sand of the sea" Go fight this with ease through education and information...

  6. jubilee
    Everything you say is right.

    Note
The tribe member was murdered in Garnet
In their view this is one of the just and necessary punishments.
It is possible, for example, that removal from the tribe/exile is considered a more severe punishment for them. ,

  7. To dispel ignorance about our future, yes in the world, and about a possible solution to the water problem, you should watch the following lecture

    http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/he/peter_diamandis_abundance_is_our_future.html

To expand the canvas and answer those who say that birth control is needed, I mean that what is needed is education. This is what lowers the birth rate and especially women's education. There is also a need to stop being afraid of the demographic demon both in our region and in the world. The problems are completely different from what it seems and you can learn about them here-

May ignorance be eradicated. Ours too.

  8. Ernest,
The need to fight to survive is deeply rooted in the heredity of many creatures, including the naked monkey. The primitive drives for survival are not a matter of belief. According to their definition, "impulses" are instinctive. In the movie "Lawrence Ish Arab" there is a picture in which a member of a tribe is murdered because he dared to drink water from the well belonging to another tribe.

  9. jubilee
There is not much to add
It is only necessary that humans believe in the existence of
    "Very primitive urges of survival".

    Mike

Movies that only distance us from reality
Every day that goes by and there is no supervision of the birth by force without consideration, so to speak,
    The imbalance increased.

Any movement or body, even if it acts out of concern and a desire to help save,
Must first and foremost make sure that he is not obscuring the same truth.
On the surface of the earth there is a limited capacity in the amount of population that can exist.

All that remains is to bet when, not pessimism but recognition of the true power that drives, survival..
I am more than you, mine is more than yours, for us more than for you…………….

    .

  10. Like the previous one, these are also very beautiful and provoke a lot of deep thought. But what guides the blood wars is never a deep thought but very primitive urges of survival of one human group against another, where ideology plays a secondary role. From the time of the Bible until today, nothing has changed in human behavior. If veganism becomes a religion, vegans will find themselves fighting with guns and cannons against members of other religions. And if the vegans are not united by such a religion, they will be the first to be murdered.

  11. Mike,
A beautiful and thought-provoking film. Assuming that the conclusions he makes are correct, the question of how to convince enough individuals of the human population still remains open. In the meantime, the continuation of wars in the world is the most realistic solution.

  12. Don't worry, what will kill most humans won't be lack of water. The majority will die in the biological wars that will begin at the moment when it is really possible to insert any vector into any genetic cargo, roughly in 10 years.
It's very simple, stupid civilizations with backward technology will not survive and their members will die.

No, gray-faced aliens will not suddenly come from space and save us all from ourselves. 😉

  13. Ori
    absolutely correct

The motivations to open up and move forward are different and varied economy, the good of humanity, nationalism, competition curiosity,,, it is naive to believe that there is some guiding hand, some common human intelligence.

The results are already seen and felt, revealing pollution, warming, the elimination of natural resources, a tangible existential threat of
Sealed, biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction stockpiles.

This is not a matter of pessimism versus optimist, there is a matter of seeing versus blind. The science we are so proud of
Taking day by day the form of the Trojan horse

A part of humanity escaped freed from magicians from idol worshipers from prophets from the days of the Sons into the world of light, science, research, culture and built with the best of their talents with great patience one floor and another floor until it resembles the building today
    to the Tower of Babel.

  14. to control the birth as much as and even more than the control over the development of nuclear weapons and terrorism. Our world suffers from an imbalance that stems from man's megalomania. This is the time for balance, as long as no other planet is found to live on - we must start controlling the amount of humans that our globe can support.

  15. There are nations and countries that encourage childbirth for ideological reasons. How will you implement worldwide birth control in such countries?

  16. The article discusses the lack of drinking water on Earth for all its inhabitants,
It results from uncontrolled accelerated growth in the population,
If worldwide birth control is not imposed,
We are likely to expect violent struggles for governmental instability around the world
while widely using weapons capable of mass destruction.
Today, unfortunately, they are scattered in dozens of countries
And perhaps also among various terrorist and underground organizations.

  17. Why don't we start producing drinking water ourselves? For decades we have known how to desalinate seawater using available, environmentally friendly energies.

  18. Israel is the country with the highest capabilities in the world for efficient utilization of its water sources, according to OECD data. Israel effectively uses nearly 90% of its available water sources! including recycled water, etc. in second place Spain: only 17%…..
    Let everyone know

  19. Would you be happy if a billion Muslims, a billion Chinese and a billion Indians disappeared???? I am
There are also some Japanese African Europeans and South Americans who don't need to
But the one who really wastes the human resources is the USA
