In view of the drought we will have to cut the water quotas

This is what the water commissioner said this week at the conference of the Israeli desalination union at the Technion

The Water Commission will be forced to cut water quotas due to the drought. This is what the Water Commissioner, Professor Uri Shani, said today at the conference of the Israeli Association for Desalination held at the Technion. "Thanks to the desalination plant in Ashkelon, which is functioning perfectly, we anticipate a milder catastrophe," he emphasized.

According to him, desalination is the best solution to the problem of water shortage in Israel and the region, but given its high cost, it must be effective. "The Water Commission must ensure that the price of desalinated water is reasonable," he said.

The director of the desalination plant in Ashkelon, Micah Taub, said that the plant is increasing its output because of the drought and is already producing 20% more water than in the original plan.

The president of the Technion, Professor Yitzhak Apluig, greeted the guests from Jordan and the Palestinian Authority participating in the conference, saying that water is the elixir of life and can also serve as a bridge to peace in the arid region where we live. "We must cooperate in finding solutions to the water shortage, since in arid areas this shortage may also lead to wars," he said.

Tomorrow the participants of the conference will discuss the planned Red Sea-Dead Sea Canal, with the participation of the Minister of Infrastructure, Binyamin Ben Eliezer, and representatives from Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.
