Researchers are still in the dark after the results of an experiment to detect dark matter were inconclusive

According to Prof. Avishai Dekel from the Hebrew University, there is 75% certainty that these are dark matter particles. This is a certainty that is not sufficient for firm conclusions, but is an interesting indication of a discovery of higher statistical significance in the near future

Detectors buried inside a deep mine yielded two potential signs of the existence of dark matter, but they could just as easily be background noise. Dozens of detectors like this make up the CDMS experiment, an underground monitor of possible dark matter signals.
Detectors buried inside a deep mine yielded two potential signs of the existence of dark matter, but they could just as easily be background noise. Dozens of detectors like this make up the CDMS experiment, an underground monitor of possible dark matter signals.

A sensational announcement of possible signs of dark matter shocked the physics community on Thursday but failed to produce the sensational results some had hoped for. In a video broadcast from Stanford University, Judy Cooley, a particle physicist at Southern Methodist University, presented the latest results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search 2 (or CDMS-2) experiment, a series of detectors buried deep underground in an abandoned iron mine in northern Minnesota. The first experiment took place at Stanford, closer to the surface.

According to her, CDMS-2 detected two signals that correspond to the state of transiting dark matter particles, but there are other possibilities that cannot be ruled out.

Dark matter is estimated to make up about a quarter of the universe but could not be observed directly. The estimates today are that the universe is made up of ordinary atoms (such as those we discover in the visible universe) and they contribute about 5%. A large proportion of the universe consists of what is known as "dark energy" - and it causes the universe to expand at an increased rate.

The presence of dark matter has been distinguished for several decades thanks to the gravitational influence on large-scale structures such as galaxy clusters, but since it does not come into contact with normal matter and does not emit or absorb light, it is considered dark - and so far they have not been able to observe it directly.

Many models claim that the mysterious matter comes in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS), meaning particles that interact through the weak nuclear force in addition to gravity (the weak force acting only at very small distances is the force of nature responsible for radioactive decay, among other things). The CDMS-2 experiment, located 780 meters below the surface of the ground at the Sudan Underground Laboratory in Minnesota, is a trap for WIMPS particles. The experiment monitors a germanium detector, cooled to Kelvin particles to capture the vibrational and ionization effects that can be produced by WIMPS colliding with germanium nuclei.

The detectors are protected from radiation interference by means of several insulation layers. One of them is a 4.5-thick layer of lead solution from an old French shipyard, whose discovery makes it certain that the radiation emitted by the lead has long since died down. The experiment's deep location also isolates it from cosmic rays and other sources of background radiation.

Despite this, Cooley and her colleagues calculated that the detectors are expected to pick up up to half a WIMP-like event during the reception of the new data, from the run of the detectors in 2007 and 2008. Even when looking more closely at the sources of the background radiation, the team came to the estimate that the background radiation contributes 0.8 events. The instruments detected two events that looked like WIMPs - more than expected from the background radiation. Cooley also added that "both events occurred at a time when the detector was operating ideally, and they were discovered in different months by different detectors."

However, the CDMS say that there is a 25% chance of observing two background events. "Our results cannot be interpreted as significant evidence of WIMP interactions," Coley said. Still, she added, the team "can't rule out any of the signals." In summarizing the results by the CDMS team, the researchers commented that the detectors were required to record at least five events to prove solid proof of the discovery of the dark matter."

In response to a question from the Hidan website, Prof. Avishi Dekal, an expert in astrophysics and cosmology from the Rakah Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University, explains: "90% of the mass in the universe is dark. does not emit radiation and does not participate in the electromagnetic interaction. We discover it and measure its amount in the holocaust to the normal atomic matter by astronomical observations of the movement speeds of luminous bodies. The high speeds (for example of the rotation of stars around the center of the galaxy) indicate the presence of a dark mass that causes the high speeds through the gravitational pull."

"The research group in cosmology at the Hebrew University participates in the discoveries of dark matter and the measurement of its distribution in space through the analysis of cosmological flow velocities and the structure of dark matter in galaxies. Now the challenge is to identify the nature of the dark matter particles in the laboratory, through their weak interaction with the matter atoms. The first step in this direction was made in the experiment reported on. When the dark matter particle is identified with certainty, it will be a first-rate scientific breakthrough, at the level of a Nobel Prize, with extensive implications both for the understanding of the universe on a large scale, and for the microscopic structure of matter."

  1. I don't understand why to this day the proofs I presented on the reality of dark matter are not presented or taken into account. I discovered the presence of the dark matter here in Israel, after I studied the minds of well-known rabbis, that 25% of their brains are familiar gray cells, and 75% of the brain is dark matter that keeps one from prying into the nose on Shabbat, and thus their religious soul, which is dark energy, Go up to the fifth floor, where the dark matter is produced, which diverts the intelligent person's thoughts to the dark side of the expansion of the universe, where the minds of rabbis and other religious thinkers are developed (of course also those whose mother is not Jewish and whose father and grandfather are not Jewish).

  2. Common sense:
The name you suggested is problematic because it is not an easy phrase to use.
If I had chosen the name, I would have chosen the name "transparent material" or "transparent material".
I have no doubt that people would have understood better what it was about and some of the comments here would have been spared.
Maybe the name "indifferent substance" would have worked well too.
Dark matter is a misleading term and it stands behind the expectation that arises from some of the questions that have appeared here that the matter will hide what is behind it.

  3. H. Sunday:
Religion doesn't give us values unless you think murdering Sabbath breakers and homosexuals is a value.
In general - how can a story that derives its authority from all kinds of lies about the creation of the world and man form a basis for something of value, when a lie is one of the least moral things there is?!
When you support some value that religion commands - you do so because you know it is a positive value.
how do you know? For example, regarding the saying "thou shalt not kill" - how do you know it is a moral saying? - for one and only reason: because you knew it even without the religion!
The source of your sense of morality is evolution and religion simply took a ride on all kinds of human qualities (including his sense of morality but also including being a gullible believer) to promote the interests of its founders and institutions.

By the way - know this: when you say that it is necessary to investigate whether there is a God, you are saying that at least on this point it is forbidden to obey the commandments of religion.
If the religion was strong enough - you would be executed for it.

  4. Wow, I almost forgot the article was about dark matter..

    A troll also says:
As a secularist, the sciences strive to give us a true picture (!) of the world.
A religious person will claim that the truth is one and in the Torah.
    Both are right.
    Science gives us facts.
Religion gives us a sea of ordered moral values.
Mainly the Torah, the Torah of Moses, a much more advanced version of the Torah of Hammurabi
It was the high-tech of its time, and is the basis of a lot of philosophy.

Since then, philosophers have tried to give more precise moral values, but they (in retrospect) did not move away from the values of the Torah by much, but mostly raised.. caveats.
As Einstein did not contradict Newton but added parameters to it.

Unfortunately, understanding science does not make a person moral (or vice versa).
Therefore, science and morality should go hand in hand as the way of truth, contradict the wrongdoers with common sense (even if they are religious), and most importantly - research! , not to "know" that there is a God and here are his writings, and not to "know" whether or not there is dark matter. Investigate logically.
Pretty please, with sugar on top

  5. "Wisdom in the open shall set her voice in the streets: at the head of the dead she shall call at the gates, in the city of Ameriah she shall say:
How long, you fools, will you love the fools, and the fools will covet them, and the fools will hate knowledge?" (Proverbs XNUMX:XNUMX)

"Do not rebuke a man lest he hate you. Prove to a wise man and he will love you" (Book of Proverbs chapter XNUMX verse XNUMX)
    Shabbat Shalom dear Jews.

  6. Ghost,

You systematically write nonsense and lies. If you want someone here to listen to you, you should first check the dictionary and professional meaning of the words you use (like energy and like God, two words you take out of context). And also check your facts. Consciousness is not energy, Spinoza is considered a heretic (and also believed that the body and mind are one) and more, I don't have the power to correct all the nonsense and lies you published as facts, because it would require years of learning. Maybe you'll start, but reading a few dictionaries and encyclopedias won't hurt you.
And if you want to continue writing nonsense, go do it on various religious sites. We are interested in conducting an intellectual, scientific, informed discussion here - and you are disturbing us.

  7. I have to admit that I have yet to come across a single subject that Google or a ghost talked about that gave the impression that they had even a minimal understanding of it.
Suddenly God is a form of energy (soon the ghosts, elves and forest gnomes will establish a start-up company that will develop alovoltaic cells that will convert it into electricity) and dark matter is just a hypothesis that someone put forward (as if there are hypotheses that have not been put forward by anyone) and not an almost necessary conclusion from many thousands of observations (some of which I have presented here many times) and that almost the entire scientific community (which probably only consists of idiots) accepts.
The whole discussion with these clowns is just a war of attrition.
It is much easier for them because they can write any nonsense and on the condition that it sounds in favor of God and against logic while the sane people have to write something logical.

  8. N. Zemach:
Now it is clear that you prefer to replace the old idols with a more shiny box.
But you're still bowing to something that's just a hypothesis someone made and nothing more.

  9. Denial is the easy way to shirk responsibility and action, it's harder to try to learn and understand.

  10. N. Zemach:
I want to make myself clear: I am not a scientist and I am not ultra-Orthodox, nor a traditionalist, nor a convert. I have nothing to do with the ultra-orthodox world. All in all, I refer to the Torah as a learning tool for the Jews. In my opinion, of all the Jews in the world, including the ultra-Orthodox, there is a very small (very, very) handful who understand the Torah. I am personally against the ultra-Orthodox who only pray (I see it as a waste of time) and against those who do not serve (I served in Gaza during the second intifada) but: I am also against those people who call themselves Jews while they are fighting their brothers instead of their enemies. Those "Jews" who believe in Gentiles and do not believe (understand) the Torah. My brother, I understand from your comments that you are an educated person who wants to learn and understand this world and I can answer the questions you raised but this is not the forum. I will try to explain briefly: think of God as a type of energy, and think that this energy exists in everything just as the "behavior" of atoms depends on electrons and the "behavior" of electrons depends on quarks and the behavior of quarks depends on the interactions of the weak and strong force and all those I have listed are types of energies ( Like wind you can't see but it exists and also electricity you can't see but you use it to turn on the computer). Thus there is "energy" that I will call "God" and it is the energy that holds the weak and strong force and quarks and electrons and so on. This energy exists in everything and also in dark matter.

  11. to google,
If so you should ride a donkey and not travel by car or plane, cook on
A fire and not on gas, to write on papyrus and not on paper, and of course not to use it
On the internet printer, but to send your responses via pigeons, or runners... they are much more ancient.
By the way, belief in idols is older than belief in God, so why not believe in something more ancient?
Arguing with people like you is a sterile force, the interesting thing is that none of you really deal with logical questions that are raised, but bypass them with arguments
    General and childish.

  12. N. Zemach:
I see you prefer to bow down to 20-year-old young hypotheses like dark matter.
than two thousand year old hypotheses such as deity.
why? Does it have more sophisticated software. After all, the older the software, the more patched it is and has more options. Because what will you do with dark matter, how will you pray to it, it doesn't have buttons or anything.

  13. to a ghost,
Do you notice how weak your arguments are? You did not address the main points of my words. By the way, who created the "devil"? I guess you would say God, what are friends? Who controls who,
And why did they come? for fun?
I actually have a religious background, and also quite a bit of knowledge, and the more I encounter people like you, the more convinced I am of your opacity and contempt for your blind faith
    In what does not exist.
By the way, what are you and your ilk doing on a site like this? Does it occur to you that someone here will start putting on tefillin following your words? I watched out of curiosity most of the lectures on the Hidravot channel and the like (truly out of an open heart and a desire to understand)
And the more I heard, the more the feeling of disgust and contempt for the lecturers and their infantile lectures grew (when in the background you see the speechless
Usually there are those who prostrate themselves on the graves of righteous people and believe in x-rays, in fathers and other frauds and charlatans).
Belief in "God" and idols was essential thousands of years ago, when man saw the sun, the moon and the stars and did not understand their meaning and "sky"
As a place where God surely resides. Today we know there is no "heaven"
As they understand then, then where does God sit (the heavens are heavens for my Lord and the earth is given to humans) in the solar system? In our galaxy or maybe in Andromeda?
See I'm not gullible to believe that I can convince a religious person like you to be open
To believe in the possibility (even if only the possibility) that maybe everything has blossomed, although
Many, many people from the ultra-intelligent and deep-thinking sects
They abandoned the "Torah tent" and mercifully gave up, you know who I mean.
I can't help but ask you a question: In your opinion, whether Moshe Rabbnu, David the King
If the Rambam were to appear here today, would the ultra-Orthodox believe in their Judaism? Would they not require them to convert to Judaism? And what would they say?
About the herds of parasitic blacks who evade work and military service?

  14. Orapel:
Exactly for the same reason that I prefer a phone to a tom tom and intelligence to stupidity.

    Ghost:
The whole argument between us was about a field I understand and you don't.

  15. First of all, thank you from all sides for sharing my opinion.

    to n. plant:

1: The God who was "before him" refers to idolaters who mainly worshiped something tangible such as an object or a body or something similar and this belief is called paganism, some say that the Jewish religion began from paganism (although I admit that this is not a very accurate explanation).
2: Indians are pagans and in the East (except for Islam which is a monotheistic religion like Judaism) there is paganism.
3: God according to the Torah is a good, merciful and kind God. Evil comes from Satan. It is possible to explain according to the logic of the Torah that if you feel bad then the devil or evil is probably controlling you and I would recommend you to forgive yourself so that you can be healed.
4: "We don't hear from him" it's just you and people like you who don't believe in him so he doesn't believe in you either. I do hear him and thank him for everything whatever he is.

I don't know about others but at least a girl like Yael Petar who writes on this site and has knowledge and knows what she is writing about and is not religious and does not deal with religion as she wrote even she as I understand shares my views. Hence it is impossible to say that those who believe must be religious, it's like understanding football without being a football player and there are many of them - you have to understand and if you don't understand then learn and if you don't know that too then don't argue if those who do understand like I do I won't argue with Mr. Rothschild Shamsel On an area where he understands and I don't, I'll try to at least learn from it.

  16. Michael Rothschild:
The dark matter hypothesis was proposed about 75 years ago and spread among believers only about 20 years ago.
Deity has existed among believers for many thousands of years.
How is it that you prefer to bow to such a young hypothesis over such an ancient hypothesis.

  17. In the matter of the Creator and the Jews, do not forget that according to the Torah there were ancient generations and cultures, even before God thought of creating the chosen people, do not go into this matter, it is unnecessary from the direction of private, local or global accounts against humanity.
In any case, regarding the verse: "I am the Lord, and there is no longer a creator of light and a creator of darkness"...the light was created and the darkness was created? Therefore, the strange Torah conclusion is that, in fact, light was created from the created elemental substance which is darkness, it sounds like Zari, that is, the most elementary particles of the element are not opaque And not even the quarks and beyond that not even the electrons and photons, but fundamental spiritual elements that create the physical ones that alone are the basis of creation and when they unite they create what is known as electrons, photons created by the created dark donkey, which sits beyond the perceived dimensions of time and space and is actually in the middle of all dimensions, When Abraham our father was a toddler and looked at the sun he claimed, this light is not God but what they created and is the foundation of the foundations that is not visible to the eye, actually the building blocks are found in the dark matter...that is why the Jews are always dressed in black or were forced to wear black (Yemen and Iran) D:

  18. Dear Yehuda Sabdarmish...may your dear grandmother live long and healthy...your reaction made me laugh a lot
Like others who started in a theological sense about what God is...

So first dark matter- one thing is certain.. there is something.. call it what you want.. that occupies a significant part of the universe known to us and affects it... so dark matter is a theory that may or may not turn out to be true.. but it cannot be said that there is nothing to it ..because something does happen and there is no other explanation than hocus pocus... so call it what you want... there is something...

Regarding divinity - the original God..even in the Tanach it was said to be good to the other and believe in me and if you don't believe in me at least be good to the other...and regarding the Tanach..there are the scrolls found in the land where it is clearly written there in the original..anyone who wants can talk to him and turn to him and not You don't need any coordinator or middleman...
So yes it might give it a spinoza and einstein god thought….
But if you want some kind of explanation..just think like this..
The Jewish people are the only ones who have remained in the same format and survived so long against all the odds... even if we reject everything it is hard to reject it...
No, I don't buy that God made amends for a disabled baby..a baby that died..the evil that people do in the world...
The world is what it is..we choose whether to make it bad or not...
They will soon say that once upon a time people lived only 30 years also by God's fault....
It's good that we cry and it's good that we move forward because of this...because this is the world...necessity is the father of invention...because if everything was good and smooth and good on the face of the world...the human race wouldn't last a second...because what's the point...there's nothing to strive for because it's good for me. Everything is fine...

I apologize in advance to the author of this article for an ugly deviation from the topic on which you invested and wrote... good luck and keep up the good work and I would love to hear more personally on the subject..
But as for God ..in living people we have to take responsibility for our world….

  19. to a ghost,
    1. In the Torah, the sentence repeats many times, in different wordings, "You shall have no other God before me", meaning there were many "Gods" and your God is another God, but invisible (and this is the great wisdom of the inventor of "our" God
    2. About half of humanity does not believe in "God" (the Chinese, the Indians, all of Southeast Asia).
    3. If your God does indeed exist, he is a cruel and sadistic God.
What did he do? He took one people, imposed himself on him and has been for 3500 years
Makes his life bitter. Brought him hatred of nations, holocausts, pogroms, scattered him
In all the countries of the world, he gave him a small and arid land, he lived in their land with another people who claim
For owning it, he underestimates his number to the size of the population of a neighborhood in Calcutta or Shanghai. And he has the audacity to call this poor people "a people of choice".
And in order to increase the suffering of "with his choice" he imposed on him all kinds of "commandments" such as wrapping a cow's skin around himself every day, wearing a garment with funny tails called a tallit, putting a covering on their head, repeating a stupid and infantile text 3 times a day (although The rabbi who prays mutters the text quickly without paying attention to its infantile content), forbidding them to pick a flower on Shabbat, and even... not to pick their nose on Shabbat.
    4. Finally, I have a request for you, in your next prayer, ask him in my name, to let us go
For our sakes for 100-200 years, we will simply divorce, so that we can multiply and rest from his decrees, and in the meantime he will go and clothe another people, perhaps the Iranians, make them miserable and abuse them and bring all his decrees upon them...
5 N.B. In the name of the same God (and according to his commandments) herds and herds of people wearing black live parasitic lives, do not work, do not serve in the army, and do not bring any benefit and do not even recognize the state as legitimate.
    6. By the way, why have we not seen or heard from him for more than two thousand years?

  20. Dear Mr. Rothschild, it seems that truly understanding God is beyond your understanding and that is why you prefer not to believe in him as much as you prefer to end the argument before you lose even more. You are probably one who gives up easily so that you don't have to make an effort. Chotsamza, you wrote 54 things in your response that are completely false and you did not understand correctly what I wrote or did not want to understand. Be healthy, hello to you.

  21. Ghost:
It seems to me that talking to you is a waste of time.
I have already explained before and Einstein explained even before him that what is called a "personal God" is actually God who intervenes in what is happening in the world.
Since Einstein is the one who defined the term "personal God" (to correct the offense he had when he used the word God in a way that allowed all kinds of idiots to quote him to promote beliefs he did not believe in at all) I ask you not to try to change the definition of this term, at least.
If you think that God created the world and everything in it without interfering in the world, if you think that he stopped the sun in Gibeon or parted the Red Sea without interfering in the world - then you are simply crazy.
If you think that religion does not claim to have done these things - then you have no clue about religion.
Religion not only claims that God intervened in the world in the past but that he continues to intervene in it to reward good people like you and punish wicked people like me.

And I repeat and remind you: your first response in this discussion called for all of us to believe in religion (yes! The one that commands the stoning of Shabbat violators and homosexuals!).

That's it - you wasted too much of my time and I won't answer you anymore.

  22. For responses 43 and 44. Spinoza was considered an apostate by the rabbinical establishment of his time and was boycotted. I don't remember that the boycott was lifted (to this very day). Correct me if I'm wrong.

  23. To your question why not call God by the name of a box of corn, then this will be answered: since God is everything, then he can be called both nature and energy and a super being and also a matchbox because a matchbox is made of atoms and atoms is also God no matter what you call "it" it exists .

    Do you understand?

  24. to mr. Rothschild:

A: In the article you brought, they talk about belief in a personal God and human immortality, both of which I do not believe in.
B: If you don't believe in religion and probably don't have a clue, how can you conclude that the God they are talking about is such as you describe?
C: The inventors of religion certainly partly invented irrational attributes for God, but in my opinion to bring people closer to religion through intimidation, by force.
I don't believe in super beings or that God controls nature or does good and does bad, I believe that there is an energy (let's call it that) which is the mother and father of all energies that every particle in nature (including quarks of all kinds and all that..) is connected to it without exception. Maybe this energy is dark matter or dark matter is also energy that is included in this energy we call God. The Jewish religion if you read in the Bible "between the lines" this is what it explains, it explains about that energy and calls it by the name "God". Your attempts to disprove the existence of God are as pathetic as they were pathetic from a thousand years ago also from the mouths of atheists who lived then and live today It is true that it is also impossible to prove that God really exists, but it is difficult to prove that dark matter exists, but we humanity are on the way to try and discover it, and we humanity do not try to disprove the attempts that dark matter does not exist. Chutsamza, I am not religious, not ultra-Orthodox, and I do not tolerate ultra-Orthodox, especially those who wear Straymel and observe Shabbat And people read the Torah and don't understand what they are reading, the last thing I will do is turn someone back to repentance. What I am trying to do is understand God as I also try to understand dark matter. What you are doing is denying God in the same way that you deny the existence of dark matter instead of trying to understand What is.

  25. Ghost:
You are simply reinventing the word God.
I believe in the God you described, but what is the reason for calling him God? what? Is the word nature no longer good? Why not call nature a matchbox? This can create even more misunderstandings! Is this what you are looking for?
The word God was invented - I repeat - by the inventors of religion - and it was not invented to describe nature but to describe something completely different that does not exist in reality.
As I said - there are a lot of words invented to describe other things from nature and I don't understand - if you want to confuse so much - why of all the words that don't belong - you chose the word God.
Well - the truth is that I do understand.
You chose the word God because this is the way of the rabbis to get people to admit that they believe in God.
It's like saying that a box of corn is God and who doesn't believe that a box of corn exists?
I repeat - it did not advance you even a millimeter.

It's also not clear to me why you are suddenly trying to appear sane after you were completely confused in response 35 in which you addressed all those who mock religion and clarified beyond any doubt your motives.
You also wrote that most scientists believe in God.
So it's true - again - if you define God as a box of corn then really the vast majority of scientists believe in him but if you define God as what the religions you want us not to mock define - then here is real information on the subject:
    http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/news/file002.html

  26. Common sense,

Meaning is in the eye of the beholder.

I am secular. I was born secular, I lived as a secular and I was never bothered by the fact that people live in my country who believe in different beliefs than mine, on the contrary, I have many wonderful friends who are religious.

The dark matter is called DARK MATTER in English and in Hebrew its scientific name is "dark matter". It seems ridiculous to me to change the name of the article and the scientific name of the concept, just so that religious people or mystics cannot mistakenly think that there is perhaps an allusion to something "supernatural" and "mystic".

Modern physics is magical and mysterious and therefore many physicists use picturesque and artistic language to describe its wonders. That's why, in my opinion, this substance was called "dark matter" and not called "that substance that only interacts with the force of gravity and the weak force".

  27. Understand this: I do not believe in a personal God but in such a God as the philosopher Spinoza describes. We understood that you do not understand what God is and according to you a God who does not interfere in the world is meaningless with this I agree because there is no such God. God is "nature" itself and also the response you wrote for example is also "God" because your response is part of nature like the computer you are writing on is part of nature and every atom and atom in the world is part of nature therefore everything is God and if you do not believe in this God as if you I also do not believe that there is an atom from which nature is built. Your responses to the fact that there is no God is like saying that there is no such thing as a Higgs boson or "matter with tiny electromagnetic interaction" I will answer instead of understanding what "matter with tiny electromagnetic interaction" is, you say it does not exist and it is a figment of the imagination of frustrated scientists.

  28. Liar Ghost:
You started your words with nonsense in the name of religion, so don't tell us that you don't believe in a personal God.
The word God was invented by the inventors of religion and is meant to describe a personal God - one who, as Einstein explained - intervenes in what is happening in the world.
"God" who does not intervene in the world is a meaningless thing and people like Einstein used the term God only to convey to the reader/hearer the extent of their enthusiasm for the beauty of nature.
The funny thing is that religious people (including those who dare - a minute after writing a text from the Hebrew Bible to try to add to their concoction the lie that they do not believe in a personal God) try to depend on this kind of "God" as if it has some connection to religion.

    Common sense:
    Thanks for the stuff.

  29. Michael Rothschild,

Congratulations for the systematic, patient and effective effort to respond in a matter-of-fact and persuasive manner even to delusional statements.

As a random visitor to the site, I just now looked at the debate - almost heroic one must say - that you conducted with apparently "scientific" claims on the subject of dark matter, in a previous publication on the subject.

I suppose that the scientific community would have done a better service to the popular side of the field if the chosen name was, for example, "substance with a tiny electromagnetic interaction".

It seems that the mystical and science fiction connotations of expressions like "dark matter" are a magnet for problematic reactions.

In this context, by the way, I felt a little disturbed in relation to the somewhat careless implication, in my opinion, of a writer whose name sometimes appears at the top of news published on this website, as I commented in response 32.

  30. Sorry for the mistake: Spinoza was not a rabbi (he studied with respected rabbis.) It was mistakenly messed up

  31. to mr. The wise Rothschild: In the same book he also says: "I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and work of human beings." Spinoza was a respected rabbi. Einstein also said (in the quote you gave) that he does not believe in a personal God (I don't believe in a personal God either) but it can be understood that he nevertheless believed in something called God, just not the same God you are talking about, he believed in the same God that I believe in. From this it is clear that you do not even understand what God is but you like to argue that he does not exist.

  32. Ghost:
To believe in me you have to exist.
It is clear, therefore, that God does not believe in me.
In order for me to call someone for help, that someone has to exist.
It is clear, therefore, that I am not calling him for help.
    I spew nonsense and lies.
That's why I find your comment farting.
Einstein did not believe in God and here is something he wrote in anger after encountering the attempts of liars like you to claim that he did.

It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world as far as our science can reveal it. [Albert Einstein, 1954, from Albert Einstein: The Human Side, edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman, Princeton University Press]

  33. Thanks to those who answered, especially to Yael and Michael.
It is worth paying attention to the collapse of the ultra-orthodox sites on the one hand and the rise of the cosmological - theological reactions on the other hand.
And it is worthwhile, with some sadness, to pay attention to the self-confidence of those who not only do not know that they do not know, but also do not know to what extent

  34. Besides, it's okay if you don't believe in God, he doesn't believe in you either and doesn't hear you when you ask him for help. But you don't have to freak out every time the Holy One, blessed be He, is mentioned.

  35. In response to 38: I doubt if a rational person believes in ghosts, I personally really don't believe in it, so that means I didn't write nonsense according to your logic (if you meant me in your response)

  36. There are no ghosts and whoever thinks they are must be stupid enough to write other nonsense

  37. Until they find the particle that causes gravity and study it in depth, it is impossible to eliminate gravity as the factor responsible for what we see in the universe.

  38. In my opinion, after the scientists manage to find (or invent) an energy called "dark matter" it will be easier to understand the spirit (soul) that holds the physical body in this world. Because no energy that has been discovered so far has been able to explain the mind and consciousness (although, as far as I know, consciousness is also a type of energy that exists in the back of the brain and is measurable, although this is only the beginning of the discovery). If the aforementioned energy is discovered, it will be easier to explain a phenomenon called soul (which exists in every living being). And this, I believe, will happen at the same time as the discovery of the Higgs boson.

  39. To all the commenters who mock religion, know this: the religion in its captions also mocks you, and therefore you are condemned to not understanding the world and only to ridiculous reactions and to try to learn from those who do believe in the name who do understand religion and who lead this world. Know this: Einstein also believed in God and not only him, most scientists in the world in the past as well as the present believe in God (Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc.) and they are the ones who lead the world and develop technology and those who do not believe are the ones who mock those scientists and after that eat their hats. You were jerks and you will be jerks.

  40. Yael Peter,

With minor changes as follows - an agreement can be reached:
    * Replacing "controversial" with "found at the forefront of research"
    * Replacing "Scientist B" with "Scientist Q" (when A-R all say A)
    * Replacing "a theory he does not believe in" with "a less convincing theory in his estimation"
    * Replacing a slap with a contradiction..

  41. Common sense,

You yourself said that despite the series of hypotheses, methods, tangential empirical and theoretical knowledge - nevertheless there is a component Subjective in the personal preferences of each scientist.
If you take a controversial topic such as dark matter and ask scientist A, he will answer you that according to theory A, dark matter is A.
And if you go to ask scientist B, he will answer you that according to theory B in general, dark matter is B.

I learned this when I once asked "Scientist A" a question about "Theory B" (ie a theory he doesn't believe in) and I almost got slapped for it.

  42. Yael Peter,

"The answer mainly depends on the belief of the scientist you ask."
It is advisable to keep the word faith for more appropriate contexts.

There are a number of astrophysical and cosmological measurements that require explanation.
There are several alternative hypotheses as to possible explanations.
These are not whimsical or religious hypotheses. Each of the hypotheses is systematically integrated into all relevant empirical and theoretical knowledge.

It would be correct to assess that given a series of valid hypotheses - there is a subjective component in personal preferences, even among scientists.

It is important to emphasize that the work is in progress:
Experiments have been formulated that allow these hypotheses to be tested.
The CDMS reported now is just one of a large series of experiments that work with diverse methods.
CDMS itself is expected to undergo an upgrade of the sensitivity thresholds by the summer of 2010.

It would be incorrect to confuse the balance of opinions expressed among the commenters on the knowledge site - and the assessments of the community of experts on the subject.

  43. Agnus:
The recitation of the verses is done in a fixed way according to the tradition as described in the chapters of Avot. Not by the people of the land.
And in his case it is easy to understand because the verse interprets two different words, one creates and the other creates, and this is not the only reference for the matter. There are many of them in midrashim in books of Kabbalah and the like.
Of course you can pretend to be able to read Hebrew, you won't be the only one. The Christians long ago adopted the Bible for themselves and interpreted it as they wished and they are not the only ones.

  44. challenged:
I suggest you read what they wrote about the subject on Wikipedia.
There are many confirmations for the existence of dark matter and there is also no theory that can explain the behavior of the universe without it.
There were several debates on the subject and I presented some of the proofs in them, but understanding the things I said in these debates requires some kind of basic knowledge that I think you should acquire first and as mentioned - Wikipedia (English - not Hebrew) is an excellent source.

  45. M. challenged,

The answer mainly depends on the belief of the scientist you ask.

It is known that there is a missing mass at the edges of galaxies that keeps the galaxies from disintegrating and scattering in space. And it is known that there is a missing mass that holds superclusters of galaxies together. This missing mass does not interact with matter except by gravitation and probably the weak force as well.

This is about all that is known about the dark mass today, and speculations have been made regarding the nature of that matter. Maybe this is normal matter like white dwarfs and black holes? Maybe it's an exotic and unusual substance that we haven't come across yet? And maybe these are the effects of particles that are in a parallel world?

All these are real theories put forward by scientists in order to explain the dilemma, and hope that salvation will come from CERN and we will find out what the nature of those mysterious particles are.

Here is a link to a post I wrote at the time about dark matter:

  46. Friends,

It seems that the CDMS-2) experiment is not conclusive, and it is possible that the calculations regarding the level of 'noise' in the system are not accurate enough, so that the level of decisiveness is even lower than stated.

I wonder what happened with the previous experiment described in the article "Dark matter detector prototype for the Milky Way" that was published on the website not long ago. Does anyone know?

Basically, it seems to me that the rather stormy debate that arose as part of the responses to the aforementioned article is also relevant to the current article - since nothing factual has changed since then.

  47. What are the hypotheses concerning the distribution of the dark mass in the universe? That is, are there such particles around us (and inside us)? Are they measurable? Will they have a kinetic interaction (collision) with normal matter?

  48. Agnus,

    To your response 24:
Without referring to the fundamental question -
    1.
It should be taken into account that in connection with 'man' several different languages were said: creation, creation, creation, building.
It is important to examine the context in each case and to distinguish the stages of creation/creation/making/building and what exactly the different terms refer to.
    2.
A specific note regarding the 'spirit' of man: the Midrash requires (Ber, Parsha XNUMX, XNUMX) "A living soul will come out of the land - this is the spirit of the first man." This is the starting point for the process of the appearance of man - and a common denominator (surprising compared to the pattern of thinking and understanding that most readers are used to) with all animals wherever they are.

In general, it seems to me that according to the above, the biblical-midrashic concept is to a large extent - multi-stage and evolutionary, and the final product - complex and not homogeneous, both on the physical level and on the 'mental' level.

  49. lizard,
Apart from the question of whether the verse you brought can prove anything, surely even according to your method the accuracy of the words is lame: in the story of creation in the Torah it is said (Genesis XNUMX:XNUMX): "And God created the great crocodiles", and also in the creation of man (ibid. verse XNUMX): "And God created man in his own image ", and here by all accounts we are talking about a creation that did not come out of nothing, so there is no evidence that the writer's intention was to divide between creation and creation.

  50. It has already been said "creates light and creates darkness" meaning that the light and the mass that light interacts with is only a composition/creation of a more basic creation.
Whereas darkness is a primordial creation out of nothing from which the mass and its derivatives were created.

  51. To all my loved ones, remember me
Since I am forbidden to comment on my well-known opinion on the dark matter that the entire scientific establishment believes in forever and ever and all the experiments it does are just for fun because the establishment is sure that the dark matter exists and only stubborn Yehuda claims that it is not so,
Therefore, to avoid misunderstandings with my dear father Blizovsky, I want to tell everyone about my dear mother-in-law that, although it may not seem like it, she has a close and important connection to the dark mass and therefore should be mentioned on this scientific website.

First of all, I want to debunk any malicious rumor about my mother-in-law's dark nature and I hereby declare that I accept a committee that is all strictly kosher thug material.
    But for our eyes.
Well, a short while ago, my mother-in-law, who was destined to live a long life, reached the age of 90, with God's help.
Well, really really, like the dark mass it has reached 75% of the true life allotted to it, and now it remains for my dear mother-in-law to reach the age of 120 and complete the remaining 25% just like our dear dark mass that reached 75% truth in this precious article and aims to complete it to 100 .

I wish both my mother-in-law and the dark mass to complete the remaining XNUMX percent of the truth.

Who is more likely to do so?
With my hand on my heart... I believe my dear daughter-in-law.
    We will see in 2039.
    Good Day
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  52. N. Zemach:
When hatred and prejudice control your impulses, you should consider what is written only as advice.
It was not written for the wicked but for those who mock the words of the wise. My advice take a deep breath and relax. Do not act out of the darkness.

  53. The root of evil is the belief in one and only truth
The more evil and wicked acts
are done out of religious conviction

  54. to sherlock,
The stories about a boiling shot of excrement for the wicked, and the meat of the wild ox and whale
The righteous (like 72 virgins for the martyrs) have their origin in their heads full of excrement of their inventors, probably also the heads of the believers of these vain things are full of the same substance. Are you one of them?

  55. N. Zemach:
You should not demand their harm out of hatred because it is written:
Anyone who mocks the words of the sages is condemned to boiling excrement

  56. One letter = two letters (and not "two letters" since a letter is from the language of a sign and not from the language of the letters A-B, it is male and not female).

  57. to German
The dark matter is the souls of the Sages and also the souls of the X-ray and the Baba Baruch, when the day comes they will turn into dark matter...

Hello, why don't you switch to the chat channel? There you will find a listening ear for your needs.

  58. Avi Blizovsky:
He wrote it with the dark matter in the brain. Besides, the dark matter was already invented three thousand years ago in a plague of darkness in the Straits. After all, it is written and there is darkness, surely this is the dark matter. And if you ask how the Israelites were able to see. The answer is clear, they used germanium sensors cooled by liquid helium and that's how they were able to see all the treasures of the Egyptians.

  59. Yael Petar:
    Dear Watson Elementary.
Assuming that the interaction is the weak force means in the weak electric field. Germanium has served well as a semiconductor sensor and is probably superior due to its much greater atomic weight and density than silicon. Which increases its sensitivity to heavy particles according to the assumption.
And the cooling is very necessary. After all, every semiconductor-based sensor produces spontaneous and annoying thermal noises.
And in particular when you connect it to a voltage source and it sits and waits for a whole year and gets bored until some event and a half comes that will ring the bell about its existence.
After all this and after all the isolated isolation it is a bit hard to believe that these were not simply noises that the sensor made just out of total boredom.

  60. A piece of cognitive dissonance:
The article was scientific and the comments seemed to have been taken from the purple festival.

  61. Avi,

A lot of physical background is missing in the article. How is the germanium detector built? And how is he supposed to detect dark matter effects? Why is it located 780 m below the surface of the earth and why does it have to be cooled to a degree Kelvin so that it can capture dark matter particles?

  62. Picturesque scientific names are not a guarantee that "everything goes".

"Dark matter", or its hypothetical alternatives, is defined to a considerable extent by the multitude of contexts - experimental and theoretical - in which it is discussed.

These connections do not include the hallucinatory interpretations with which some of the respondents chose to amuse themselves.

  63. We are limited by our 5 senses, therefore we have no grip on the "dark" matter, but if we open another feature within us, another sense, then through it we can discover the reality hidden from our senses and explore it. Develop it little by little until we discover the hidden part of reality from our senses from where all the forces act on us.
Like radio waves that we have no control over, but they exist but are not visible to our senses, or ultra waves that we only get by using special devices that we build, so the soul is the same "tool" and the same "device" that you develop within yourself to explore phenomena that are hidden from the 5 senses.

From the introduction to the Zohar book

XNUMX) And know that the fourth mode, which is the essence of man when he is to himself without the substance, we have no grasp of it at all. Because the senses, and our imagination, will only offer us a discovery of actions of the essence, and nothing in the essence itself, because for example the sense of sight, offers us only shadows of the visible essence, roughly their impression against the light. And the sense of hearing is just the beating power of some essence in the air. And air rejected from his power, hits the drum in our ears. And we hear that there is some essence near us. And the sense of smell, it's just air coming out of the essence and hitting our olfactory nerves, and we smell. And the taste, is just a result of touching some essence in our taste nerves. After all, all four of these senses do not offer us only the discovery of the actions that revolve around some essence, and nothing of the essence itself, and even the sense of touch, which is the strongest of the senses, which distinguishes between hot and cold and between solid and soft, all of these are nothing, but the discovery of actions within the essence, and what Only cases of the essence, because the hot can be cooled, and the cold can be warmed, and the solid can be turned into liquids by the work of flattery, and the liquids into air, i.e. only gases, from which all the grace of the senses has already completely expired, and now the essence still exists in it, for you can again to turn the air into liquids and the liquids into solids. It is obvious to your eyes that God the senses will not reveal any essence to us, but only incidents and the discovery of actions from the essence. And we know that everything that does not come to us in the tangible way does not come in our imagination either, and what does not come in the imagination will never come in thought, and we have no way of understanding it. After all, thought has no perception at all in essence. And no more, but even our own essence, we did not know what it was. Because I feel and know that I occupy a place in the world, and I am solid, and I am warm, and I think, and the like from the manifestation of essential actions, but if you ask me what is my essential self, from which all these manifestations are drawn, I do not know what to answer you. After all, providence prevented him from attaining any essence, and we achieve only the revelation and images of actions, which are revealed from the essences.

Ld) And don't be surprised at this, because according to this custom you will also find it in our physical achievement. Because for example, our sense of sight, that we see before us a great big world, and all its wonderful fullness. After all, we really don't see all of this, but only within ourselves, that is, in our back brain, there is a name like a patagraphic machine that draws us its name apparently for us, and nothing outside of us. And for all of this God has made us a place in our minds, like a polished mirror, which transforms everything we see there, which we see outside of our minds in front of our faces, and yet what we see outside of us is not a real matter, how much we have to thank His providence Veith, who made in our minds this polished mirror, to enable us to see and obtain anything outside ourselves. Because in this He gave us the power to understand everything with a clear mind and attainment, to measure everything from the inside and the outside, and the like. And if it weren't for that, we would be missing most of our education. The same is the case with a divine object in the divine intelligences, however all these changes are done internally, the souls who receive MM see everything in the effector himself, because only in this way do they get to receive all the intelligences and all the pleasure in the thought of creation. And likewise judge from the above parable, even though in practice we see everything right in front of us, from every intelligent person who knows clearly, that what seems to us is only the interior of our minds. Yes, the souls, even though all the images they see in the effector, they have no doubt that all these are only within themselves and nothing in the effector. And check things because I can't expand on them anymore

  64. Mr. Y is missing here. Sabdarmish who will cancel everything and claim that it is a mistake and there is no dark matter..

  65. The whole universe is alive. Every organism that ends its time period on Earth changes physically. For example, people who have learned that there is probably such an energy called a soul and it lives forever, then the reincarnation and all that... Once the person (for example) dies, then only the body dies, the energy that controls the person continues on and it can certainly be made of the same dark matter or something like that
