The global company TOYOTA has developed a prototype for a human support robot (HSR) designed to help people with limited limbs. The prototype is added to the series of robots developed by global Toyota in order to facilitate people in daily activities.

The HSR robot is activated by voice commands or via a PC board. It is compact, has excellent maneuverability and is lightweight. The robot has a cylindrical body with a folding arm that allows it to pick up objects from the floor, vacuum thin objects, reach objects in high places, open curtains and perform other household tasks. Furthermore, the moving parts of the robot body and arm do not generate a large amount of force, thus giving the user maximum safety and peace of mind.

Aiming to improve the quality of life, Toyota developed the new prototype through collaboration with the Japan Guide Dog Association, with the aim of identifying the needs and desires of people with limited mobility. The development of the functions focused on picking up fallen objects, collecting objects and communicating with family members and caregivers. In 2011, Toyota, in collaboration with the Yokohama Rehabilitation Foundation, carried out trials of using the robot in the homes of people with limited limbs, in order to receive feedback from users during development.

In addition, due to the aging population in Japan, Toyota will cooperate with research organizations such as universities, as well as with people involved in nursing and health activities, in order to research and develop new functions for HSR such as remote assistance, with the aim of bringing about practical application in the field of care for older people.

Toyota presented the HSR prototype at "The Cutting Edge of Home Care and Rehabilitation Equipment" a special event that will be held as part of the 39th Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo at the end of September.
