Loneliness is (also) in the eye of the beholder

Not good for man to be alone
But he is alone anyway.

The dopamine pathways in the brain and between them the striatum
The dopamine pathways in the brain and between them the striatum

During my psychology studies, one of the lecturers explained to us the difference between "loneliness" and "loneliness", so that we would be able to better understand feelings and emotions. In truth, beyond semantics, there is indeed a significant difference here.

If I remember correctly (and in any case we will take this as my personal interpretation), when you are alone - this is a relatively momentary situation, from which you can both enjoy and learn. Sometimes you even need that silence. Loneliness, on the other hand, comes from within our souls, and can occur even when we are around people. But this situation, where you feel misunderstood, rejected or simply hungry for connection and touch, has mental and physical consequences.

It turns out that one of the consequences of loneliness (and there are others!) is that it creates, perhaps, a "closed circle" in which the lonely person reinforces circles of loneliness. The brain does this, it turns out from a study conducted by social and affective neuroscience researchers from the University of Chicago in two forms:

On the one hand, when a chronically lonely person views images of pleasant social events, less reinforcement occurs in their brain (in an area called the ventral striatum, an area associated with reward), than in people who are not lonely. On the other hand, when the same individual views images of unpleasant social events, he activates the area of his brain responsible for vision - the visual cortex - more than when he views images of "just" objects, and thus probably pays more attention to the plight of others, which may also affect him.

That is to say - the circuit created in the brain according to this study, at least, among individual people - causes little positive reinforcement in front of the positive things in the society around us, and gives more influence to what is negative around.

On the other hand - there is the question of the chicken and the egg. The study tells us about a relationship between a feeling and the level of brain activation of 23 subjects, while they were viewing images in an fMRI scanner. This is just one finding from a series of studies in the field, and first-rate researchers. But we don't know for sure what caused what. Perhaps the poor social reward is related to the fact that those who are lonely get used to finding solace in non-social situations, and perhaps they were like that from the beginning.

My conclusion is that loneliness that is accompanied by sadness is never a pleasant feeling, and when you feel it - and it happens to all of us sometimes - you can always find a solution. Sometimes also changing the way of thinking and focusing on pleasant moments or social situations is a significant part of the solution, and not surrendering into the "closed circle" that loneliness (maybe) creates.

"Not good for man to be alone

But he is alone anyway.

And he is waiting and he is alone

And he's procrastinating and he's alone.

And he alone knows

even if he lingers

let him come"

I wish everyone who reads this finding pleasant and satisfying moments alone, but as little as possible

  1. This is because you went with the project of Jehovah God (the one from chapter XNUMX).
If you were to follow God's project (the more abstract one, chapter XNUMX) you would get the following model
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; And they came down in the fish of the sea and in the fowl of the sky, and in the beast and in all the land, and in all the trampling, the trampling on the earth. XNUMX And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him: male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and subdue it; And come down in the fish of the sea, and in the fowl of the sky, and in every living thing that moves on the earth. XNUMX And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed: you shall have Yes, to eat.

Here we are not talking about a gardener/keeper made of dirt who contributes a rib to an even inferior creature.
Here we are talking about a male and a female who were created and received great power from God.

The attempt to contain the Tanakh and judge it according to contemporary values of full equality - with emphasis on full - between all human species and types - with emphasis on all - is incredibly anachronistic. So it didn't work that way. This is a fairly contemporary and rather secular invention. American women's suffrage is not even 100 years old.

  2. period, you're just rambling. Religious people constantly change sentences, for the reason that "the original sentence is so and so". Whose original sentence? of a religious/masculine text and impervious to injustices to reality. "I will help him against him"?? The woman exists in her own right and she created the men (they are the ones who depend on her care)..so it is enough to fantasize..(if she prevented you from reasonable care, you would not be able to type here).

  3. I am an older single person less involved in society than when I was young because after all the lifestyle changes with age and also the environment. I've never felt lonely and I don't understand what they mean, maybe because I'm just interested in everything. I love reading, I love computers, I love shopping, cooking, politics, science, the world is full of all kinds of things that you can take and get a lot from.

    Am I a strange animal???

  4. "Maintain the purity of your expression." ??? What is this? Did you see the video that Camila brought?

  5. dear dot,
    Keep your speech pure.
I don't like Mati Caspi, nor the conclusion that is required from what is said in Genesis:
If the woman (Hava) was created from a man's rib, she has a genetic load almost identical to that of a man, therefore their children were supposed to have very serious defects, and most likely also a relatively short life span.
Not to mention that Eve was the first to give birth, so the chance of birth defects should have been greater.
So the whole story of Adam and Eve seems a bit dubious.
But there is no reason to get down to personal lines.
I don't think a philosopher enjoys solitude, but he does have the ability to define solitude in a way that makes it easier for him to live with solitude.
Those who do not understand philosophy and psychology will not understand the affinity of philosophers and psychologists to these areas of interest, and may even find it strange that people "choose" to be philosophers even though they know that they risk a life full of loneliness.

  6. Despite everything written, a wise man said that
    "Those who enjoy solitude
He is a wild animal - or a god"

  7. Cheers, Camila.
I remember that once in the army I was required to fill out some form (perhaps something related to insurance) in which I had to fill in details about my partner.
One of the details I had to mention was "kinship relation".
I filled out the form in the presence of the clerks who gave it to me and when I wrote in the appropriate box "wife" and not "wife" - they all cheered me.

  8. point,
    I wouldn't call Natan Zach's words 'casual'
And here is the song performed by Mati Caspi (who also composed the song) with a grand piano in the middle of the barn:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_igMSUFVIJg

In my personal opinion, and from observing the reality around us, Natan Zach is much more true to the truth than that verse from Genesis. Beyond the factual matter, the original verse (according to the Hashest and according to some interpretations) presents the woman as a tool whose entire purpose is to serve the man, the man. A tool that has no right to exist on its own. In short, a servant, a slave. The form of wording and interpretations of this type are suitable for the course of those periods and their customs for women (and for other people whose status was usually considered inferior such as slaves and gentiles, something that "justified" clearly immoral actions unless you belong to the Taliban or another primitive and dark society). I prefer Natan Zech on my bookshelf.

  9. It is written: It is not good for man to be alone, I will make him a helper against him."
The section of Abel is alone anyway, it is casual.
