The Mars Spirit rover arrived at the site known as the "Home Plate" inside the Gusev Crater, and the photographs it sent from there only added to the scientists' puzzles.
When the reddish robot sent pictures of the landscape, it sparked healthy debates among the team running the mission.
"So far everything has been fine," said Steve Squires, the lead scientist for the Mars rover at Cornell University. "This is the most spectacular layered rock we have ever seen on Gusev," he told Space.com. "The images that Spirit sent from the home plane are stunning" said Sciors. "Many of us exclaimed WOW. The first photo was emailed over and over again.
But excitement aside and now the task of trying to identify the true nature of the site stands. "And it will still take time" commented Squires.
