Mission STS-115 ends: Atlantis lands safely in Florida after day-long drama

The space shuttle Atlantis glided to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida today, Thursday, at 13:21 Israel time, 06:21 am US Eastern Time. The shuttle concludes the STS-115 operation, which was a successful operation, although towards the end it was accompanied by concerns, the landing site was still dark, and this is considered the 21st night landing of a shuttle in general, of which the 15th at the Kennedy Space Center.

Atlantis was launched on September 9 and arrived at the station on September 11. The team raised two beams that will extend the spine of the station as well as two new arrays of solar collectors. The astronauts performed three spacewalks to install these systems and to maintain the station.

Mission STS-115 was the 116th shuttle mission and the 19th to visit the space station. Atlantis itself flew 27 times including six to the space station.

The next shuttle flight will be STS-116 of the shuttle Discovery, which will continue to train the station in December 2006.
