Israel sent 380 million barren flies to Croatia in order to help reduce the population of fruit flies in the country's citrus orchards.

The pupae of the flies were grown in BIO laboratories in Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu and underwent a special sterilization process in the factory's radioactive facility, which operates under the supervision of the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission. After a flight to the airport in Split, Croatia and a short set-up, they were scattered in the orchards along the border of Croatia and Bosnia, driving the pest flies out of the orchards and helping the farmers complete a successful growing season.

The Bio-Fly project to combat the fruit fly using natural biological methods is being successfully implemented in Israeli agriculture with the assistance and support of the plant protection services of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Plant Council, within the framework of which tens of millions of barren flies are scattered twice a week in the orchards, orchards and fields in the Arabah, the Hebel Hashur, Lachish, Emek Ma'aina and the Golan Heights. The goal is to minimize the use of pesticides to control the fruit fly in the project areas. Following the success of the project, its expansion to additional agricultural areas is being considered.

  1. Why shouldn't this process also be applied to mosquitoes that cause a lot of suffering to people?
