Stem cells may grow teeth

The process announced by British researchers has been tested on animals and within a few years they hope to be allowed to conduct clinical trials on humans. Dentists will have to change professions

Suffering from dental problems? Need dentures? You might be happy to know that the future is (almost) here: British scientists announced yesterday that they have developed a way to grow new teeth in place of lost teeth. According to them, within a few years, it will be possible to implant cells in the mouth from which a new tooth will grow, instead of bridges and porcelain teeth. The advantage of the new process comes from the fact that dentures require a piece of titanium to be implanted in the jawbone. The process is expensive and requires a bone in excellent condition, and not all patients are able to undergo the treatment. With the new method, the tooth will grow and connect to the jawbone naturally. The process will be carried out as follows: the doctors will take stem cells from the patient, which can grow into any tissue in the body. The cells will be treated in the laboratory to adapt them to the growth of teeth. After a few weeks, a group of cells will be implanted in the patient's mouth through an incision in the gums under local anesthesia, and within a few months the tooth should grow. Real teeth maintain oral health better than artificial teeth.
It has already been successful in laboratory mice, said the scientists from King's College, who will continue the research in humans at a private company called Odontis. Prof. Benny Peretz from the Hadassah Ein-Kerem School of Dentistry and the Hebrew University says that this is a "revolutionary breakthrough". "There is no person who does not suffer from dental problems, and would like to avoid implanting dentures," he said. "There are endless uses for the method, if it becomes possible. A person who doesn't like his teeth will be able to pull them out, and regrow them through a cell transplant."
