The second spacewalk out of three in the Discovery mission STS-128 has ended

The spacewalkers performed a number of logistical tasks, including upgrading the station's cooling system and preparing the outside of the station for future spacewalkers who will be able to use leg restraints

The second of three spacewalks was completed this morning (Friday) at 07:51 Israel time. It lasted six hours and 39 minutes. The spacewalkers, Danny Olivas and Christer Vogelsang completed most of their missions and even made progress on some of them, including the installation of foot stops on the outside of the station avenue that will be used by spacewalkers in the following missions.

The rest of the shuttle and station crews continued to unload cargo from the Leonardo Multipurpose Logistics Module into the station.

Also, the two installed an ammonia tank and unloaded the tank whose contents ended up in the space station's pipes. There are now about 272 kg of fresh ammonia circulating in the cooling system thanks to the work of Olbas and Vogelsang today. Their main activity was to install a system of ammonia tanks, which pushes the ammonia through loops in the avenue of the space station to help get rid of the great heat generated in the station's systems. In addition, they prepared the empty container, which they replaced with the new container, to return to Earth by tying it inside the cargo deck of the shuttle Discovery.

They installed the protective lenses on the cameras on the station's robotic arm, which will protect them from contamination when the arm is used to dock the Japanese H-II cargo vehicle to the station later this month.
