Spacewalk, January 31, 2007

International Space Station 14 crew chief Mike Lopez Alegria and flight engineer Sunita Williams spent about eight hours outside the space station Wednesday as they began the process of upgrading the station's electrical and cooling systems.

The spacewalk was the first of three planned in nine days. During these spacewalks, the astronauts will return the power and cooling systems to their permanent configuration. The astronauts waited 25 minutes at the end of their spacewalk to be sure they were not contaminated with ammonia from the liquid lines of the cooling system they were working on.

The next spacewalk is expected on February 4.
