American astronauts Lopez and Williams underwent treatments to remove ammonia from their spacesuits

Spacewalk on February 4, 2007The two American astronauts currently on the crew of the International Space Station, Michael Lopez Alegria and Sunita Williams, returned to the airlock on the International Space Station after a seven-hour spacewalk.

The two went through a series of purification processes, following a leak of toxic ammonia droplets from the space station's cooling system, which the two repaired. They rerouted the second of three circuits in the cooling system of the American component of the station - Destiny, and strengthened the ribs of a radiator in the P6 corridor component of the station after disconnecting the old ammonia tank that was out of use in preparation for its complete removal from the system this summer. The mission will be carried out on the third spacewalk from the Quest space station on February 8 and another spacewalk planned by the Russians on February 22. López-Alegría thus completed his tenth spacewalk, a record among astronauts. Williams will have four spacewalks after the next spacewalk after she also participated in one of the spacewalks on the STS-116 flight with which she arrived at the station, a record among the women who have participated in the space programs so far.
