The commander of the 17th crew of the International Space Station, Sergei Alexandrovich Volkov, and cosmonaut Oleg Dmitrievich Kononenko took off on Tuesday (14:16 p.m. Israel time) for a six-month journey on the space station.

Less than ten minutes after launch, the antennas and the array of solar collectors of the Soyuz TM spacecraft were opened. Along with Volkov, a lieutenant colonel in the Russian Air Force, and Kononenko, the Korean astronaut Su-Yeon Yi also took off, according to an agreement between her government and the Russian Federal Space Agency.

Yi was the backup astronaut, after her government chose another astronaut to fill the position, but he revealed many disciplinary violations during training and therefore the 29-year-old Yi was chosen to represent her country in space.

Yee will return to Earth along with crew 16 commander Peggy Whitson and flight engineer Yuri Melanchenko in their Soyuz TM-11 spacecraft on April 19. The two have been staying at the station since it was inaugurated on October 10.

The members of the 17th crew will greet the members of the previous crew, and will also transfer the third crew member - Garrett Reisman - to their command after docking at the station on Thursday. Reisman arrived at the station on the space shuttle Endeavor on mission STS-123 on March 11. He joined the 16th team at the end of his term and will provide the 17th team with his experience as a flight engineer in the first period.

The 35-year-old Lovelkov had the first flight into space. He previously trained with the 11th and 13th teams - for both he served as a backup cosmonaut. He is the son of the cosmonaut Alexander Volkov who traveled three times for long periods in Soviet and Russian space stations between 1985-1992. Koronenko, 43, is also taking off for the first time. He trained with the members of the 9th and 11th teams.

Astronaut Greg Chaimtoff is scheduled to arrive at the station and replace Raisman on Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-124 mission. This mission is expected to take off in late May. It would also be the first space flight.

  1. pleasantness:
So turn on the lamps outside and make sure that there is a free space - as I said and that there is no dirt scattered on the parking lot so that the wheels don't get a flat tire

  2. To Noam:
The spacecraft will dock on Thursday.
The time is not clear yet because it depends on the traffic.
In any case, you should make sure that one parking space remains free for the whole day until the spaceship arrives.

  3. A question for my father, the editor of the site, just don't delete the question at what time the spacecraft is supposed to dock according to Israel time
