40% of heavy smokers: the law forbidding smoking in places of entertainment is equivalent to religious coercion

Strangely, 17% of the non-smoking public agrees with them. This is according to a survey conducted in preparation for the smoke-free party to promote COPD awareness, which will be held this Thursday (May 31.5) at the Artisan Club 17 in Tel Aviv * Tomorrow will also be a smoke-free day

Do the Israelis accept with love, or at least with understanding, the law that prohibits smoking in places of entertainment? It turns out that the majority of the public - 88.5% - supports the law, but in the eyes of 41% of heavy smokers (11 cigarettes or more per day) this law is tantamount to religious coercion. 28% of the light smokers (1-10 cigarettes a day) also think so, and surprisingly - 17% of the non-smokers as well.

This is according to a survey conducted these days ahead of a "Smoking-free party to promote COPD awareness", which will be held this coming Thursday, May 31.5 - International No-Smoking Day, at the 17 Artisan Club in Tel Aviv, in collaboration with the Association of Pulmonologists. The survey was carried out by the Geocartography survey institute among 500 respondents, who are a representative sample of the population in Israel.

The survey also shows that secular and religious people manage to reach agreements at least regarding smoking and its harms: 75% of the secular and 75% of the religious and ultra-Orthodox oppose the parallel between the law prohibiting smoking in public places and religious coercion. However, it seems that Jerusalem is particularly sensitive to issues of coercion - 25% of the Jerusalem respondents think that the law is equivalent to religious coercion, compared to only 11% of the respondents in the Sharon region, for comparison.

MK Erdan: "It's time to go towards the non-smokers"

MK Gilad Erdan, one of the biggest fighters for banning smoking in public places, is among the guests who have promised to attend the party. Ardan: "It's time to go towards the non-smokers and respect their right to breathe clean air, even at parties. To this day, any Blaine who wanted to breathe fresh air during a party had to go outside. At this party, for a change, those who want to smoke will have to go out."

By the way, the bill initiated by MK Erdan and his friend Yoel Hasson, to take disciplinary measures against the owners of public places where people smoke and against the perpetrator himself, will be brought up for discussion in the Knesset committees this coming week (30.05.2007) for a second and third reading.

More in the survey: What do Israelis know about the harms of smoking?

The survey reveals that 76% of Israelis believe that the most serious damage caused by smoking is lung cancer. But the majority, in this case, does not determine. Only about 7% of the respondents knew how to indicate the correct answer: COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is considered the fourth cause of mortality and morbidity in the world.

"The lack of awareness of COPD makes it difficult for doctors to fight the disease," explains Dr. Gershon Fink, chairman of the Association of Pulmonary Physicians. "The dimensions of the disease in Israel are not really known. There are different estimates, but since there is a large public for whom the disease has not yet been diagnosed, we cannot reach them and minimize the damage."

The COPD disease affects the respiratory tract and manifests itself in a chronic disturbance to the flow of air in the lung bronchi. Its symptoms are: cough, shortness of breath on exertion and in advanced stages also at rest, and a tendency to recurrent respiratory infections ("colds"). The disease has a devastating effect on the quality of life of the patients, who find it difficult to carry out daily activities due to breathing difficulties. Early detection of the disease is of great importance, because smoking cessation, together with combined treatment - medicinal and medical - can slow down the rate of development of the disease and improve the quality of life of the patients.

The treatment of the disease mainly includes bronchodilators and inhaled steroids. Recently, an innovative preparation for the treatment of COPD called Spiriva was put into use. The preparation is given by inhalation and opens the airways for 24 hours when taken once a day.

May 31, 2007 - "No Smoking Day" in Israel and around the world

The announcement of the Cancer Society

On Thursday, May 31, 2007, the Ministry of Health and the Cancer Society will celebrate "No Smoking Day". This day is held in Israel every year, at the same time as the "No Smoking Day" observed all over the world, since 1987. The purpose of this day is to put the scourge of smoking on the global agenda and to increase awareness of preventing mortality and morbidity from diseases caused by smoking tobacco.

On the occasion of marking this day, the Minister of Health, MK Yaakov Ben Yazari, said: "Israel, like all the reformed countries in the world, will wage a war against smoking, the number one cause of death in the world. The Ministry of Health will do everything to increase enforcement against smoking in public places, will continue the work of legislation on the issues that appear in the global convention against smoking and will do everything to warn against all the serious harm caused by the phenomenon of smoking."

Miri Ziv, CEO of the Association to Fight Cancer: "The goal of the day, and the activity of the association throughout the year, is to fight the scourge of smoking and to tell people around the world what they can do to protect themselves from passive smoking and assert their right to clean air and a healthy life. In addition, on this day we are calling out to many smokers who wish to quit smoking: take advantage of this special date to quit smoking. You can reduce your risk of getting sick - significantly."

About three years ago, the government approved the signing by the Ministry of Health of a treaty signed by 168 enlightened countries who understood that the tobacco epidemic is a worldwide problem with serious consequences for public health, which requires international cooperation as extensive as possible, with the participation of all countries, in order to provide a global response Effective, appropriate and comprehensive. "In light of the state's commitment, we expect that in the near future laws will be enacted that will be a real implementation of the commitment the Israeli government accepted upon ratifying the treaty. There is still a lot of work to be done in this matter," says Ziv.

During the week various activities take place. The Ministry of Health, the Association for the War of Cancer, the Maccabi, Klalit and Moheed health funds and the smoking cessation association are organizing a joint conference, the first of its kind, which is specific to the topic of smoking cessation. The Association for the War on Cancer will spread all over the country booths on the topic of smoking for the general public and more.

The smoking epidemic claims about 10,000 deaths every year in Israel, more than the number of people who die in car accidents, wars and acts of terrorism combined. According to the data of the Health Minister's report on the smoking situation in Israel, the percentage of smokers aged 18 and over is on average 24%, 32% among men and 18% among women. Among the Jewish population, 30% of men smoke and about 21% of women smoke, while among the Arab population the percentage of male smokers is 7 times higher than that of women, 42% of men versus 6% of women.

According to the data of the World Health Organization, about 5 million people die every year in the world as a result of smoking. Smoking kills 560 people every hour, 13,400 people every day. Forecasts predict that by the year 2020, if the number of smokers does not decrease, the number of deaths as a result of smoking will increase to 8.4 million people every year! The forecasts even predict that by the year 2025 1.7 billion people will smoke in the world, today about 1.3 billion people smoke.

  1. To the sane lord

"The absence of the signature indicates its pulp"
And also, if you are so sane, why didn't you find time to learn to spell?

  2. Gil - you are just stupid
I wanted to say a lot of things about the nonsense you wrote... but in my opinion this sentence finds what I think about those who write nonsense and such stupid things in parasha.

  3. Before they come to chase the smokers so that they can do a home inspection.
It is not possible that Dubek, which is still issued on the stock exchange, will continue to operate as it operates today as if nothing is happening.
It is not possible for the state to earn billions in taxes from the sale of drugs (cigarettes).

I know that the easiest thing is to come and chase the smokers.
I also know it is the least effective.
Because smoking cigarettes is also one of the teenagers' way of rebelling against the laws so that laws of persecution and coercion against the smokers will only push them more to smoke cigarettes.

  4. After they calculate the percentage of passive smokers in places of entertainment who got sick and died as a result, they will come to the conclusion that it really is persecution for the sake of persecution.

The real victims of cigarette smoking are the smokers.

The state's share of the pie is around NIS 8 billion
The state is in control of 75% of the pie share in mass murder.
75% of the share of profits from the sale of cigarettes goes into the state coffers.
which is almost 90% of the gross profit from the production of the poison
Not only is the state a partner, the state is the controlling owner of the profit share of the pie.
It's money with blood on its hands, it's not money that can be put into the state coffers.
This is money with which you have to fight the tobacco companies and eradicate them to the point of disgrace.
This is money that should be used to rehabilitate and help those affected by the poison
This is money that should be used for research and free detoxification drugs for poison victims

The state sets the price of cigarettes to the price where its income from taxes will be the highest.
And the money with blood on her hands she closes holes in the budget.

The country that is fighting for a 300 million NIS addition to the health basket. Under no circumstances will it be willing to give up a budget of eight billion NIS. Even with is money tainted with blood.

It's just like the Germans would take the money from the Jews and kill them with gas.
Only here it is done in a longer time.

Why aren't cigarettes included in the drug group list?
After all, it is known and proven that nicotine is an addictive drug
And despite this, the state does not define it as a drug.
Because the country earns billions from it every year.

In Britain, tobacco was determined and ranked ninth in the list that opens the group of the most dangerous drugs as a drug worse than cannabis, LSD, and ecstasy.
