Today it is already a fait accompli. In accordance with the urbanization processes of recent years, the future contains dense, tangled, congested and polluting large cities. According to the World Health Organization, in 2050 about 70% of the world's population, or about 6.4 billion people, will be urban. Many of these will live in old cities that are decades or centuries old, built for much smaller populations, with very different needs. As these new metropolises continue to grow, they risk becoming sprawling regions that are inefficient, waste precious resources such as land, water and energy, and are increasingly difficult to manage logistically. So how can we deal with the impending future?

The urban XNUMXD experience

In the last two years, Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIECE company, has been developing a set of solutions that should help researchers deal with these problems. The set of solutions, called 3DEXPERIENCity, aims to create virtual and holistic models of cities. The 3DEXPERIENCity platform handles areas such as architecture, infrastructure, planning or resources and residents, through virtualization, simulation and collaborative capabilities. The "Smart City" project of Dassault Systèmes is led by Dr. Ingeborg Rocker, an architect and senior lecturer on urban planning, who believes that in order to build for the future we need to take a new approach to the design of our cities.

Traditionally, urban planning aims to achieve standardization of every element in the city. The claim is that the construction and systematic planning of roads, streets or intersections in the same way will lead to lower costs and facilitate the processes of construction, expansion and repair of the urban space. But, just as medicine has come to the conclusion that medical treatment is individual because no two people are the same, so at Dassault Systèmes we believe that no two cities can be considered the same. Instead, the company claims, cities should be treated as a living tissue, in which every element and every resident is part of a whole. Environmental changes, no matter how small they are, cannot be made without examining their impact on the entire environmental entity.

One of the best ways to understand the entirety of the city is through 3D simulation. A three-dimensional model of a city, as offered by Dassault Systèmes under XNUMXDEXPERIENcity, enables a continuous and accurate integration of several sources of information (both free and paid information), and presents an independent reference for the city and all the players involved in it. Such simulations also allow the analysis of essential elements such as vehicle and pedestrian traffic, garbage concentrations, noise, air pollution, and more. When the information is collected and presented in XNUMXD, it is easier to analyze and understand it, so that the residents will also understand the meaning of their daily behavior. Furthermore, the creation of one unified system that simulates the city on all its levels will allow different entities to connect to it in order to draw the information they need, and at the same time will allow transparency and cooperation between all the parties involved.

The Internet of Things (or IoT) can be the factor that unites all of these, when many sensors will be scattered throughout the city, including those that examine heat, air pollution or noise, or cameras that monitor the movement of vehicles. Here, too, XNUMXD plays a central role. For example, when it comes to noise, the information transmitted from sensors that measure and calculate the decibel level in different places in the city can be visualized on XNUMXD simulations of the city. Thus, noise coming from an airport can affect new buildings being built in a certain neighborhood if it is not calculated correctly. Accordingly, the same topic can also be examined depending on the materials of which the building is composed. For example, glass will insulate less than concrete.

Sensors and future three-dimensional planning will also help with regard to transportation control. In France, a group of researchers is already working on examining traffic flow in cities and the ways that can help with this. For example, the location of a traffic light or the duration of its operating cycle can affect the loads at the intersection where it is located. The researchers in France have already discovered that traffic circles reduce noise by about 60%, reduce fuel consumption by 80%, and improve traffic flow by 30%. All this through examining the data in three-dimensional simulations.

One of the most comprehensive applications recently made for Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCity platform was in Singapore. In June 2015, the company inaugurated a project called Virtual Singapore together with the National Research Fund (NRF) of the Prime Minister's Office in Singapore. The project is a collaborative platform with a rich data environment, and complex visualization techniques that will be open to Singapore citizens, businesses, government bodies and the research community. This platform will allow them to develop tools and services that will attempt to meet new and complex challenges expected for Singapore in the near and distant future.

Images and data collected from various public authorities, including geometry, spatial geography and topology, as well as historical and real-time data such as demographics, traffic or climate data, will enable Virtual Singapore users to create rich visual models and extensive realistic simulations of the city, to simulate how the city will look in the future, and on what topics Burning urban areas must be treated first, for the well-being of the residents. Users can also study the effects of urbanization on the state of the city, and develop optimal solutions of logistics and governance, as well as operations related to environmental and disaster management, infrastructure, security or community services.

(Editor's note, at the Science in the age of Experience conference organized by Dassault Systèmes, several of the speakers told about the Singapore project, and among other things described how a sensor that was distributed to all the youth in the city helped to examine their preferences - and it turns out that instead of going to the invested neighborhood parks, they went to other places of entertainment. Another example There was the protection of the buildings against winds while taking into account the real wind regime as reflected by the sensors placed in the city of AB.)

And what about the residents? According to Dr. Roker, the future city will become a dense and compact space. It sees an increase in the existence of personal, hyper-dense cities designed around multi-purpose spaces that take into account use during all hours of the day. The institutions will be concentrated in a limited space. People will work, shop, live, relax and dream within one small area. This move will make cities and life within them more efficient and sustainable. The benefits of urban transformation can lead to an improvement in air quality by reducing the amount of vehicles, and reducing the use of energy because buildings will be concentrated at a higher density.

  1. This is definitely a huge project. In my opinion, the part of transportation should be implemented. The traffic lights, air pollution control. Noise control. And to create available and convenient public transportation in the cities by electric vehicles. To reduce air pollution and noise.
I assume that today there is a control center in every city for the traffic lights on the roads and for public places to prevent vandalism and crime.
There is room to improve parking availability in cities, especially in Gush Dan.
But if public transportation is convenient and available and not so many vehicles enter, we are in the right knee.

  2. It sounds like instead of really solving the world's problems, we are only faced with more difficulty and more difficulty until someday we live like ants in a nest or the difficulties open a gap that will be impossible to close.
Instead of investing in how to grow more food or how to manage larger and more dense cities, invest in birth control technologies, which will prevent all of the above-mentioned problems in the first place.
