Prof. Menachem Ben-Shashon, President of the Hebrew University, announced the appointment of Prof. Yeshayahu (Shay) Arkin, Head of the Institute of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, to head the Research and Development Authority of the Hebrew University.

Prof. Arkin was born in 1965 and did his undergraduate studies at the Robert H. Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Smith at the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University. After completing his doctoral studies in cell biology at Yale University in 1995-1989, he served as a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in England. In 2000 Prof. Arkin joined the faculty of the Hebrew University as a senior lecturer in biochemistry and was awarded an Alon scholarship. In 2008 he was elected head of the Institute of Life Sciences. Prof. Arkin currently holds the Arthur Lajoa Chair in Structural Biochemistry.

Prof. Arkin's research deals with the characterization and analysis of the mechanisms of action of membrane proteins, which are of central importance in the physiology of the cell. Arkin focuses on proteins that regulate salinity and acidity in bacteria and viruses. His research on the mechanism of action of the bacterial sodium pump received a lot of attention. Prof. Arkin is also involved in medical applications of his innovative approach to membrane proteins.

The president of the university, Prof. Menachem Ben-Shashon said today "Prof. Arkin managed to shed new light on the cell penetration mechanisms of the influenza and SARS viruses and on the solution to the special folding of the protein responsible for Huntington's disease. Prof. Arkin is a scientist whose work is dominated by the integrative and multidisciplinary part. Prof. Arkin has a fruitful interaction with biologists, chemists, physicists and doctors."

According to Prof. Arkin, "The research and development conducted at the Hebrew University, as in the other universities in the country, is a critical engine of growth essential to the future and security of the State of Israel. Precisely in this difficult period of economic uncertainty, the Israeli government must follow the example of the President of the United States who significantly increased the budgets for scientific research with the understanding that they are critical to the future development of the American economy."

Prof. Arkin is involved in the establishment of the new curriculum - biology-chemistry and was responsible for the computing at the Institute of Life Sciences. He served as the faculty representative on the steering committee for biotechnology and, in addition, was active in the planning of the new building for the teaching laboratories in Kiryat Edmond Y. Safra.

  1. There is no doubt that Xi is one of the most talented scientists in our small country.
    A completely superior person.
An excellent researcher and a true biologist with a rare understanding of chemistry and biophysics.
I was privileged to be a student under his guidance in an extended course in biochemistry, and although he made the exam difficult 🙂 he was a wonderful lecturer. Exceptionally didactic and comprehensible.
Only good words, and good luck to Prof. Arkin.

  2. As someone who was privileged to be a doctoral student of Prof. Arkin
I have no doubt that Prof. Arkin will lead the scientific research at the university to great achievements
Good luck and I am proud that I had the privilege of being your student
