In search of the particle of God - a series of lectures by Nir Lahav following an article on the Hidan website to which a link from an ultra-Orthodox website has been deleted

Shabbat square surfers as well as the rest of the general public can listen to lectures in the Cinematheques about the search for the divine particle

This is a picture of the standard model. The particles are arranged according to their properties. Any such property should be explained with the help of symmetry or symmetry breaking. Today we know how to explain most of the properties of particles. In red you see all the particles carrying the force and in the other colors you see the particles of matter. In green you see a family of particles called leptons (in which the electron is found) and in purple another family of particles called quarks.. The standard model also predicted the Higgs particle, although it does not appear in this picture. Source: Wikishare

Last July, the world of science and with it the world media was moved after the confirmation of the existence of the Higgs particle, known as the God particle. Following the discovery, I wrote a long article for the general public called Higgs fields forever - in search of divine symmetry, who tries to explain to the maximum depth possible what the Higgs particle is and why the discovery is so exciting. The article was published on several other sites such as the Hidan site and was very successful (on my blog it has already been read by over a thousand readers). The article even reached ultra-Orthodox circles! It could be read on the ultra-Orthodox website Kikar HaShabbat until the site's administrators discovered it and took the article down.

It turns out that at the end of July a message appeared in the Shabbat Square forum from a user who asked to know what the divine particle is. In the comments, send it to my article on the science website. But then he discovered that the page was blocked by Etrog - a content blocking service on the Internet intended for the ultra-orthodox public. Apparently the word God that appears in the article caused it to be blocked. Thus the physical information was blocked and did not reach the ultra-Orthodox audience. At this point I must stop and write to you what Etrog's slogan is, "Saving the poor on the Internet, for our sakes!!! For our future and for our children. Etrog filters the content all year round." Indeed, for the sake of our children's future, explanations of what the Higgs particle is were blocked. The user in the Shabbat square did not give up and wrote in the forum: "I really want to know what this is about, so why do you have to upload a link that a thread blocks?! You are all invited to download it (if possible) don't be afraid I've already been sent - it's better that I receive 10 times than 0. Thanks to everyone."

He requested and received, in the thread of responses to his message they copied and pasted the entire article and thus opened the readers of the Shabbat Square to the progress of physics. Later, the entire page was deleted from the Shabbat Square archives. Information censorship at its best! (For the full information on the science website)

These days I am working on the presentation of the lecture "In Search of the God Particle" which is based on my article. I also invite the ultra-Orthodox and religious audience who are interested in the innovations of science to come to the lecture, where there is no blocking or censorship service that can prevent you from the knowledge. The lecture will last about two hours and will include scientific explanations, movie clips and rock music clips that will complete the experience of the power of revelations.

In search of the God particle
Will we soon understand the secrets of creation?
Following the discovery of the Higgs particle, known as the God particle, it is time to answer what is so important about this discovery and what is the connection to God? The Higgs particle was already predicted 40 years ago and since then we have been waiting for the appropriate technology to check if the prediction is correct. Its discovery strengthens our knowledge of why the particles that make up matter and us have mass. Today it is clear that without the mechanism behind the Higgs particle our universe would look completely different. What awaits us following the exciting scientific discovery? And how will it affect each and every one of us? Can we go down to the deepest level of nature, what will we discover there and how should it affect our daily lives? We will try to answer these and other questions in the lecture "In Search of the God Particle" In this unique lecture, for the first time, the progress of modern science towards a theory of everything will be explained simply until the discovery of the divine particle and what is expected beyond it, while demonstrating the ideas with the help of film clips and rock music clips. On our way we will meet the band Queen and the Prophet's Scoundrels and movie clips from "The Tree of Life", "A Space Odyssey", Monty Python and more. This is how science, philosophy and art will come together in this lecture.
First lecture in a series of lectures for the general public on the subject of science and knowledge of reality.
Lecturer: Nir Lahav, PhD student in physics at Bar Ilan University in the field of brain research. initiates and manages the company The magic of science Lectures and courses aimed at making the scientific discoveries that concern each of us accessible to as many people as possible. writes a regular blog called free and happy The one who deals with philosophy and science and the combination between the two.

  • In the coming week there will be two lectures, one in Tel Aviv and one in Haifa. Later there are to be lectures also in Jerusalem, Sderot and Rosh Pina.
  • On Wednesday, 31.10.12 at 21:00 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Price NIS 40 (free for Cinematheque subscribers). I made a promo video for the lecture:

Many like you want a strong and stable state of Israel, I believe that the atmosphere that existed at Rabin's rally when the members of the religious movement Bnei Akiva and Rabbinia joined those of the secular movements in the struggle for democracy, tolerance, brotherhood
In my opinion, this is the only way there is a chance for a better future.

The path of hatred never brings unity, understanding, sharing, it only weakens and exhausts. The main question, my father, is not
Who opposes and who is right, but which way do you choose.

  2. reader! I am with you in your righteous struggle, but the scientists also have their own agenda. The media frenzy attracts readers and publishers, and these are the main source of the site's funding

Shamulik the shackle! Tol is kneeling down from Mebein Ineiha :-(…

  3. Avi,
We don't want a science defense site or a war site against world religions, Scientology, the New Agers and the devil knows what else - we want a science news site only. Those who want to fight should go to their websites and write to them directly in the forums. In this way, the most people will be exposed to his claims (because he is on their website) and it will have maximum effectiveness.

  4. Dear and unlovable Assaf.

First - I am bound by your mistakes in Hebrew.

Second - "What's your name" (I doubt if Jewish education can understand this quote).

I don't think you have the right to tell me how and what to react or bind.

Thirdly - your quote is out of place, since I am lamenting the very fact of Helena and the malinites,
And so there is an inherent contradiction in using your quote in this case.

    Best regards Shmulik.

  5. Seriously, I am indeed against anyone who opposes science, regardless of their religion. I simply also have a sincere concern for the very existence of the State of Israel, and because I live here, I have more massive knowledge about what is happening here, but it is indeed a problem for the whole world and for all religions, but no religion needs protection when it attacks science. It is a fact that in the case of the second article it is Christians in general. Why do religions need protection but sects for example don't? How is Scientology's opposition to Ritalin different from the ultra-orthodox's opposition to vaccines?

  6. my father
You are right and therefore also reinforces what the reader said and I and many others, the thousands that took place last week, aim to participate in controversial discussions that have nothing to do with science, medicine, technology. But for politics to faith, for your information there are many and enough websites that deal with religion and Kabbalah in politics.

Your claim that faith in the Jewish religion must be discussed because there are currents that oppose science is an irrelevant claim because you know very well that there are hundreds of other factors in the world that oppose science whether it is from the religious or political side and sometimes also economic, and it is even more clear to you that you do not contribute at all to the promotion of the spread of science among its opponents, Maybe even whitewashes the hatred and opposition.

  7. Reader, last week's skepticism weekend attracted many thousands of surfers so you must be wrong. It's just that the one whose ideology leads him astray and who is not willing to understand that when religion fights with science it is forbidden to confront it with one's hand tied behind one's back, is the one who thinks it is unnecessary.

Only the article I link to has received two thousand views https://www.hayadan.org.il/bill-nye-million-views-video-on-creationism-271012/

  8. Avi,
No, you are wrong. I, for example, don't want to see it because: (1) It doesn't interest me. (2) I don't think a science news site is a place to clash with religion/spirituality. Instead of delving into science, I see endless debates about why religion is wrong and science is right - who cares?

  9. I don't know what the problem is. He chose to surf through Etrog's filter of his own free will, so what's wrong with him because Yelin? If he is not satisfied, he always reserves the right to change internet provider.

  10. To the reader, very true, The married women of the review I really don't want to see. This is not a criterion to disqualify critical articles. This is the exact opposite of good journalism.

  11. I also share the opinion that science vs religion debates have no place on this site. It's boring, it's unnecessary, it's boring, it's (in my opinion) idiotic, and most importantly - it doesn't interest the site's target audience - who come here to read about science and not go through a journey of persuasion as to why religion is wrong and science is right. True, this is a "once upon a time" article, but it seems that they don't want to see that either.

  12. To my father and to all haters of religion and the religious,

I'm a big believer in criticism and no one is supposedly perfect,
But sometimes too often on this site, which is blessed in the eyes of the articles about religion and the religious
Infested with extreme generalizations and hatred, and in most of them also with a complete lack of familiarity, and certainly not factual.

I have often written here a quote from many cooks-
"The pure righteous do not accept for conviction but add justice, do not accept for apostasy but add faith, do not accept for ignorance but add wisdom"

The sentence is relevant to all of us.

I really enjoy the scientific only shutdowns on this site.

  13. I didn't read the whole article, I stopped at the part where you complain about censorship, you?!
How many talkbacks of mine and others did you delete because the content didn't suit you? I never cursed, annoyed or fought with anyone, just my opinions are a little different from yours
Look at yourselves before you slander others

Clarification: I like the site and most of the writers, but I avoid posting because I usually get a message that my comment is waiting for approval...why?

  14. I agree with my father.
There is a close connection between the scientific method and values. Values of seeking the truth and doubting, the value of freedom and more. It is no coincidence that when the scientific revolution began, the Enlightenment period also began in which democracy and human rights were restored.
Science is primarily the search for truth but also the values that stand at its foundation.
I will write a detailed article on this soon as a follow-up to my article that was published last weekend - "Doubt all the way to the truth"
    Nir

  15. Seriously, there is a close connection between the things I write and the development of science in Israel, even a warning about curbing science is writing about (negative) development.

  16. my father

Your full right, without a doubt, to act to fight to publish according to your belief and understanding, we are in a democratic country.
But not on this site, here we are thirsty for articles related to science, medicine, technology, net, the world is full
In researches in inventions in developments every day every hour in dozens of countries.

I personally am even willing to volunteer and help you find articles around the internet in the relevant fields.

  17. Seriously you are wrong. If 200 such news accumulated over 15 years, you treat them like 5,000 articles in space. And they have a scientific issue. The issue in this article is that the ultra-orthodox are censoring modern physics just because someone used God's name as a joke.
It's important to me as a citizen and it's also important to the country that as many people as possible learn physics and mathematics and engineering, and not Talmudic fluff but because of short-term considerations the country is doing the exact opposite of what's in its best interest. If you silence everyone who comments on it, don't be surprised if you find yourself in an official halachic state in ten or twenty years. Justified criticism is silenced by answering it and not by keeping mouths shut. It works in the short term, but in the end it will erupt not in the mildest way like here on the site.

  18. Pine
Two small differences between Science Daily and the science website and one difference between the USA and Israel
    1. Science Daily only publishes press releases and nothing else.
    2. There are no talkbacks.
    3. In the USA there is freedom of expression defined in the constitution even for those without a religion. For some reason in Israel this natural position, which according to the polls is more common among scientists than in the general public, is still not legitimate, but just as you cannot resist the force of gravity, you cannot stop this phenomenon (see the link to Walla at the beginning of this thread)

  19. Agree with Ernest.
Unnecessary debates that are not worthy of a scientific website!
(compared to other sites like sciencedaily)

    Pine

  20. my father
I am not religious, if you were to check how much you/the site invests in debates in discussions around religion in relation to the rest of the articles, you would get a different picture than the one you are hunting for "how many of the 15 thousand articles on the site are 'such'
These are discussions that have no scientific basis, that are not related to the world of science. And not to the liking of the majority of the audience on this site

  21. Moshe, what you are doing is called targeted elimination of websites. You go to a website and play on the conscience of the website owner who will do everything except criticize the religion and then what comes out is that the religion, which is hostile to science in this case, protects itself from criticism instead of answering the criticism.

If I publish, it forces you to respond to the criticism, if I don't publish, everyone will only hear your side, which has huge budgets millions of times more than mine (all the different types of miscreants who dare to present a scientific topic in every lecture - usually in a distorted way and then go against the scarecrow that built ). So even the little I have you want to steal from me and let them increase the pits without interference? After all, one of the website's goals is to fight ignorance, providing knowledge about science and the environment is one of the ways to do this, but a direct call to fight ignorance is also included in the same charter. In proportion - the first part wins by knockout.
And by the way, it's not just the ultra-Orthodox, you are welcome to count how many reviews there are of Christianity and Islam and of course about cults of all kinds and species on the site.
    Greetings, Avi Blizovsky

  22. Father, good morning, even though it looks like you didn't really sleep.
If you call dealing with the ultra-orthodox as an issue, what does that do to the other issues? Will you then replace the purpose of the site?! I personally and it turns out quite a few others ask not to. Because it matters to us, what is usually reported here, and how it is usually reported here, with respect and dignity. We ask that it remain so and that you continue to engage in building knowledge and a wise and constructive attitude towards the environment and lead to slightly different values than what is cultivated in the other media districts!.
    Sincerely

  23. Seriously, you are welcome to count how many of the 15 thousand articles on the site are 'such' and how many are science and technology. After all, you won't complain that there is a space reporter almost every day. Right? But a topical article once a month is too much. For some reason only the religious have feelings and sensitivities http://e.walla.co.il/?w=/201/2579074

  24. Hatz ben Hamo - I agree with your comment - those who want to reach the content come!
Let's say that you would start going down on those commercial companies, what was the chance that those companies would change their attitude towards you and your blog for the better?
Zero chance. I would not be surprised if attitudes and measures were even aggravated. Any sane person will come to such a conclusion, just because it requires very simple logic and minimal life wisdom. What are the implications of all this for the repeated confrontation in this different society? Obviously!

  25. arsenate,
I personally faced the same problem with my blog (http://benhamo.org). Some of the filters of commercial companies that do not allow employees to browse all kinds of websites - blocked my blog, for example. I don't have porn or things like that on my blog. What's more, I don't express myself in the cleanest language in the world and I write in fairly free and not "official" Hebrew. So I was blocked in some filters. Does this mean that now I will fight for my site to be "cleaned" from the list? No, because it's not that important to me. Anyone who wants to, can read my posts directly via RSS or via Google's cache and in other ways.
I don't think my father should censor or decide whether or not to put a post on his site just because Etrog blocks it. It is very easy to bypass the blocking of Etrog (use a free VPN like hidemyass.com for example), and even if you bypass blockers, you can reach the content.

  26. my father

It's a shame that you bring up such topics on this site, I assure you that the great majority of those who come to this site are interested
In articles related to science and technology.

  27. Avi,
There is another trick that can be done, but you won't get Hits from it, which means that ads may appear from the site, but the content will come from another link.
All you have to do is after two days (approximately) give a link to the cache that appears on Google (the cache is created after 2-4 days since the content appears). Since these are long links, you can shorten them with goo.gl
That's how I would rate it if they block this, they will block all the content of Google's cache for all websites in the world.

  28. So far they have not found the wanted Higgs particle.

Below is the story. According to the standard model there was supposed to be a particle called the Higgs particle that gives mass to various particles whose existence has long been proven. They looked for the Higgs particle and didn't find it, looked for it some more and didn't find it, looked for it some more and didn't find it. They searched for him for several decades and did not find him. Due to many searches, we got stressed.

The physicists said: We do not find the Higgs particle probably because it is a giant particle, therefore it cannot be created in the old accelerators, there is a good chance of producing a giant particle only if we use a more powerful accelerator.

Invest a lot of money and build a more powerful accelerator known as the Hadron Accelerator. They turned on the hadron accelerator and discovered a huge particle. Nowhere did they verify the claim *the giant particle we found gives mass*, all they found is a giant particle *and nothing else*. The giant particle doesn't have to be a Higgs particle, it can just be a giant particle (which gives no mass), but telling stories doesn't cost money.

And all this belongs to God? Just making an impression. Making an impression doesn't cost money either. Slandering religious people doesn't cost money either.

  29. It's interesting to see. Nir Lahav needs the behavior patterns of the audience that are different from him in order to publish his lecture. Riding the ultra-Orthodox wave is unnecessary because those who are truly ultra-Orthodox will never read this - the "wonders of censorship" and the simple fact that they don't have computers, and those who are not so ultra-Orthodox will read about it on this site anyway. Everything that is happening and will happen now (neither up nor down for those true Haredim), is a flood of reactions with an affinity for disdain, anger, and sometimes even hatred that will contribute almost nothing to a real solution to the problem. This is a childish and lack of real depth dealing with an apparent problem, and perhaps even a poor attempt to recruit reinforcements based on the difference of the other!
