Will cholesterol medications become preventive medications recommended for everyone?

A new study found that anti-cholesterol medication prevents narrowing of arteries and reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks. According to the data of the Ministry of Health in Israel, about 30,000 heart attacks occur every year, of which about 4,200 are fatal.

A study whose results were published last week reveals that drug treatment stops the development of atherosclerosis that leads to heart disease and stroke. The results of the new study were presented for the first time at the ACC American Cardiology Conference in New Orleans, United States.

The study showed that Crestor, intended for the treatment of high cholesterol, slowed down the progression of atherosclerosis among people who are in the early stages of the disease, and do not yet suffer from its symptoms. The results showed a significant slowdown in the progression of arteriosclerosis among the subjects, compared to those who received a dummy drug (placebo).
"The significance of the research results," explains Dr. Avishi Ellis, director of the Lipid Clinic at Meir Hospital, "is that the transition to administering drugs to lower cholesterol levels as a preventive treatment for people at low risk is not far from reality. We are witnessing more and more studies showing that preventive treatment is correct and especially desirable in the treatment of diseases such as atherosclerosis, which lead to heart attacks and strokes."

The new study is the first to show a positive effect on atherosclerosis among people at low risk of a heart attack.
The study, which lasted 24 months, examined the effect of Crestor 40 mg on the level of atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries. 984 subjects in the early stages of the disease participated in the study: men aged 45-70 and women aged 55-70 with a cholesterol level of 120-160 mg/dL who have a risk of less than 10% of a heart attack in the next ten years, or with cholesterol levels of 120-190 mg/dL Few who are not in a risk group apart from their age.

Upon completion of the study, "Crestor" was actually tested in the entire spectrum of atherosclerosis treatment. Exactly one year ago, another study was published which tested the effect of the drug among patients at high risk of a cardiac event, who suffer from a high degree of atherosclerosis. A study has shown how the drug that helps to reverse the narrowing of the arteries and thus contributes to the prevention of heart attacks.

The main researcher Prof. John R. Cruz, director of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, said, "It's exciting to see that the use of Crestor has the potential to slow or even stop atherosclerosis in people who are in the early stages of atherosclerosis."

About atherosclerosis:Arteriosclerosis leads to cardiovascular diseases, the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. This is a disease of the arteries that practically every person develops from the day they are born. Sclerosis is actually a fatty deposit that accumulates on the inner walls of the artery and causes the artery to lose its elasticity and narrow, and gradually to the blockage of the blood stream. Sclerosis can affect the cerebral arteries, heart arteries, renal arteries and arteries connected to other vital organs such as the arms and legs. Damage to the arteries that carry blood to the brain can lead to a stroke such as a stroke. Damage to the arteries that carry blood to the heart will lead to heart attacks.
The danger of developing atherosclerosis increases due to risk factors such as: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity, age and heredity.

About Crestor:Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a super new statin, which is a breakthrough in cholesterol treatment. According to international studies, Crestor is the most effective statin for reducing high cholesterol. Crestor makes it possible to reach the target values of cholesterol in patients who have not been able to balance using the existing treatments. It reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) by 50%-65% already at an initial dose of 10 mg, and allows over 80% of patients to reach the target values of "bad" cholesterol. In addition, it is a statin that has an optimal effect in raising the "good" cholesterol. Crestor has a low side effect rate that is the same as other statins. The medicine in the health basket.
The uniqueness of the Shaban insurances is that you can buy prescription drugs found in the health basket at a maximum discount.
United refuses to issue the medicine and refuses to comply with the conditions of the supplementary insurance.

  3. Crestor - causes headaches and stomachaches, general weakness and dizziness.
Now the question is - to suffer in the present (it's hard for me to move and work) or to suffer in the future from what the "experts" predict for me - heart problems and clogged arteries...?

  4. Crestor is a great medicine, but at the United Health Fund the medicine is sold at full price on the grounds that it is not included in the health basket.
