The father of the "test tube babies", Prof. Robert Edwards from Great Britain won the Nobel Prize for Medicine

Edwards, together with Patrick Steptoe, was a partner in discovering the ways to fertilize an egg outside the uterus and return it to the uterus for the continuation of the pregnancy, as a solution to fertility problems caused by a malfunction in the system that transports the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus or other mechanical problems

Robert Edwards from the University of Cambridge, was exclusively awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 2010. Edwards, together with Patrick Steptoe, was a partner in discovering the ways to fertilize an egg outside the uterus and return it to the uterus for the continuation of the pregnancy, as a solution to fertility problems caused by a malfunction in the system that carries the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus or other mechanical problems .
In the words of the reasoning, the chairman of the prize committee said, at an event that was broadcast live on the Pass Nobel website, that Robert Edward began his research in the field of fertility in the 20s. He developed a vision for the use of in vitro fertilization as a solution to fertility problems and that for about 20 years from 1958 to 1978 he solved problem after problem that hindered the implementation of fertilization.
In July 1978, the first three children created by in vitro fertilization were born. Since then, about 4 million children have been born through IVF methods to the joy of their parents. Today 1-2% of all newborns in the West were brought into the world with IVF methods, it is an effective and safe method, it is supervised by ethics committees, many of the children are as healthy as the other children. Those born in the eighties already have children of their own.
In response to the question of one of the journalists in the audience why Edwards won alone, the chairman of the committee answered that Edwards came up with the idea first and although he had partners along the way, they helped him in sections and not in the overall picture, for which he himself is responsible.
Robert Edwards was born in 1925 in Manchester, today he is a professor at the University of Cambridge.
The Nobel Committee did not mention this, but it is clear that the in vitro fertilization revolution formed the basis for today's capabilities in the field of stem cells, and the possibility of providing babies with a surrogate mother.
