An impressive image sent to us from the Cassini spacecraft shows the tiny moon Mims looking up at its ruler planet Saturn. Mims, which is 397 km in diameter, is the small gray dot in the lower right part of the image. Cassini took the picture on May 11 this year, from a distance of 720 thousand km from the planet Saturn. This view of Saturn is from an angle of 14 degrees below the plane of the rings. Saturn's shadow overshadows the plane of the rings just outside its rim. The resolution of the image is 43 kilometers per pixel.

Adding the translator: Mims Moon was first discovered by the British astronomer and composer William Herschel in 1789. The average density is low (1.17 gm130) and indicates that the moon is mostly frozen, but there are some small rocky areas. One of the most prominent features in Mims is a huge crater that stretches XNUMX km wide and is named after its discoverer, William Herschel. Mims is known for its many craters and fissures, but the Herschel crater is the largest. The elliptical shape of the moon is clearly visible today thanks to the images sent to us by the Cassini spacecraft. Mims Moon is also responsible for protecting the spacecraft from material impacts between the two large rings, the A ring and the B ring.

  1. Thanks for the comment. Last week I upgraded to WordPress 2.2 but for some reason the graphic editor doesn't work well, so I use a code editor. In order not to memorize the HTML tags, I simply use a previous article as a template. I hope the problem will be solved soon.
