In Tel Aviv, the international conference opened yesterday on the subject of "Quasi-Crystals - The Silver Jubilee"

The conference will be chaired by Prof. Ron Lifshitz from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University

Yesterday, the international conference on "Quasi-Crystals - The Golden Jubilee" opened in Tel Aviv with the participation of over 80 scientists from more than 15 countries around the world. The chairman of the conference is Prof. Ron Lifshitz from the School of Physics and Astronomy.
Quasi-crystals are non-periodic crystals, which since their surprising discovery, in 1982, by Prof. Dan Shechtman of the Technion, have been a source of intensive interdisciplinary research by researchers from diverse fields such as: physics, applied mathematics, chemistry, materials science, crystallography, photonics and even Art and architecture.
The purpose of the conference is to mark the 25th anniversary of the discovery of quasi-crystals, while reviewing past achievements, to have an in-depth discussion of the main issues that preoccupy us today, and to chart the way for continued research in the future.
In Israel there is a small but active community of researchers in the field of quasi-crystals. In recent years, new researchers have joined this community, including those developing applications based on metamaterials with a quasi-crystalline structure in optics. It is the international recognition of the activity of this scientific community that led to the decision of the two main international bodies, responsible for conferences in this field, to authorize holding an international conference in Israel.
It is worth noting that this will be the first time that an international conference in the field of quasi-crystals will be held in Israel, although international conferences of this type are held approximately once a year. This conference will allow the Israeli scientific community to reveal the scope of its activities in the field of quasi-crystals in a concentrated manner and in front of the best researchers in the world, and will undoubtedly help establish the status of its researchers as major contributors to international research in the field.
It should be emphasized that the international research in the field of quasi-crystals was born following the discovery of the Israeli scientist (member of the organizing committee) Prof. Dan Shechtman, for which he was awarded, among other things, the Israel Prize and the prestigious Wolf Prize. Therefore, there is no more appropriate place than the State of Israel to mark the 25th anniversary of this discovery by the international scientific community. This will give this community the opportunity to share the respect it deserves for the founder of the field and for Israeli science in general.

General material in Hebrew on the subject of quasi-crystals can be found in the online journal of the Israel Physics Society
