On Friday at noon, a representative of the space station administration at NASA, Terry Werits, informed station commander Michael Fink and flight engineer Sandra Magnus that the engineers discovered the problem that caused the shutdown of the water purification facility that turns even urine into drinking water.

This is a mechanical malfunction in the centrifuge in the component known as the UPA (Urine Processor Assembly), which is used for the process of breaking down the substances in the urine. UPA is part of a water recovery system that will eventually process the astronauts' urine, sweat and toilet water and turn it into drinking water.

The system was repaired this week by members of the STS-126 mission team at the Destiny Laboratory on the space station and underwent its first tests on Thursday and Friday, which as mentioned ended in a malfunction. On Saturday, the engineers at the NASA control center will continue to monitor the sensors of the water recovery system.

Tonight (tonight) Heidi-Marie Stefanshin-Piefer and Steve Bowen will leave for the third spacewalk of the STS-126 mission after a first spacewalk riddled with malfunctions and a second (on the night between Thursday and Friday) a smooth one. During today's spacewalk, the two will complete the renovation and lubrication of the bearings of the Alpha solar collector. They will clean and replace some of the engine's components and replace others. The spacewalk is expected to last seven hours, starting at 13:45 PM Eastern Time - 20:45 PM Israel Time.

  1. It reminds me of a book I read a million years ago - "Gulliver's Travels to the Land of Babylonia"

  2. It is transferred in bags to the Progress supply spacecraft after they have been emptied of supplies. When the spaceships fill up (not only with poop but just other things that are not needed on the station, food packages, etc.) the supply spaceship leaves the space station and burns up in the atmosphere.
Then everything falls on us as rain... mere…
