Finally - the astronauts will not repair the shuttle's heat shield during the spacewalk today (Saturday)

The spacewalk will be devoted to the further preparation of the station to change the location of a component and the solar collectors on it from the station roof to the end of the corridor

The members of the crew of the shuttle Endeavor on mission STS-118, and the 15th crew of the International Space Station began preparations for the fourth spacewalk. The ten astronauts and cosmonauts also held the traditional press conference for members of the shuttle and station crews.

The mission managers on behalf of NASA finally decided on Thursday that the fourth spacewalk of the STS-118 crew, will not include repair of the heat shield. After hours of examining the data and images collected by the team, managers concluded that the damage did not pose a safety hazard to the Endeavour's crew.

The preparations for the spacewalk include preparing the equipment and reviewing the procedures. The spacewalk will be performed by Dave Williams of Endeavor and Clay Anderson of the space station. The sale is supposed to start on Saturday, 10 am (XNUMX pm Israel time).

The astronauts also used Friday to continue transferring equipment between the two spaceships - unloading the cargo that the shuttle brought to the station and loading experiments and equipment that must be returned to Earth.

  1. I was so wrong!!! how fun!
    Well done! Well done!
I'm glad to hear that everything I wrote in the comment above turned out to be wrong. They are alive, they are on the ball. Glad to hear and glad the mission was successful.

  2. I think that apart from the danger there is also a waste of mission time here...
Actually, if the damage is repaired, they will probably have to give up something else (installing receivers or something when...)
So do a risk assessment.. and take a risk..

  3. We hope they return home safely.

Father, do you have any idea why they made such a fuss about whether to fix it or not? Why couldn't they just fix and thereby remove this cloud over our heads? Are spacewalks so dangerous that the calculated risk of a spacewalk is greater than the calculated risk of something happening back into the atmosphere? Or maybe the astronauts are not qualified for this kind of repairs at all?

To summarize my question briefly: Why don't they just buy it and that's it?
