Today, the Pratt Awards ceremony for environmental communication, organized by the Heshel Center for Environmental Thinking and the Pratt Foundation, took place at the Beit Reuven Museum in Tel Aviv.
The event, which has already branded itself as a significant and leading event in the field of environmental communication in Israel, was attended by many media persons from the field of the environment and those related to it, as well as members of environmental organizations and members of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
In the atmosphere of an organic breakfast, meaningful dialogues and meetings were created and the guests enjoyed a panel on economy and green growth and of course the awards ceremony itself
Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan, who spoke at the event, said, among other things, that: "In the past year, the media introduced new concepts into the public discourse that helped the ministry and the organizations: "social and environmental justice" and "distribution of resources." Issues such as: the gas royalties, the restoration of the Dead Sea and the achievement of charging the cost of financing from those who are really making money and causing environmental damage, saving the beaches, the asbestos project in the north, the ammonia tank in Haifa and the removal of hazardous materials rose to awareness thanks to extensive media activity. Every table that had to make a correct decision made it thanks to being raised above the radar of the media" (see the expansion later in the article).

Below is the list of award winners and the judges' reasoning:
National media:
Kobi Ben Simhon, "Haaretz" supplement:
Time and time again brings extensive articles with depth and not only with an aspect of reporting. It is precisely the fact that he is not an environment writer that favors the launches into other fields that stand out in his articles.
Kobi is gifted with deep investigative skills and the ability to tell a story. His articles resemble reading a story and this is not trivial.
In particular, the article about the bees "Honey Trap - The Community of Bee Lovers Revealed") stood out: a surprising article that succeeds in telling a story that the majority of the public is not aware of at all. This is an article that stems from a different point of view: nature and man within nature and today in the field of environmental writing we do not encounter this enough. Kobi's writing manages to create an impact that appeals to many more people and not just those in the environmental circles.

Local communication:
Itai Moshe, The Colonies Magazine:
The striking thing about Itai Moshe's articles is that they are all characterized by in-depth journalistic work: investment, study of the material and a broad understanding of all contexts are evident.
Each of Itay's articles is instructive and enlightening and the seriousness with which he treats his work is inspiring and cannot help but influence the readers
Honorable Mention: Rotem Laundry "North 1"
Rotem succeeds time and time again in bringing to light primary stories: trees that are candidates for felling, construction plans on the beaches and much more.
Her writing is readable and clear and in good Hebrew. Her connection to the area and the fact that she is very involved and local in every sense of the word is evident

Radio and TV:

Merav David, Channel 10 News:
Merav's articles about the plans to build a mine in the Barir field near Arad are inspiring:
Marev is gifted with the ability to produce deep insight: the ability to show the big picture and break it down into its components. This gives added value to the viewer and is not easy at all in a few minutes of broadcast. Merav also managed to crack the visual challenge in her articles. All these add up to a very impressive picture with a very big impact on the viewers.

Commendation: Racheli Mizrahi, Channel 1:
It is not easy to make a visual analysis of environmental issues and manage to make them accessible in an interesting and high-quality way, especially when the competition is against all odds for the usual topics on the news agenda. Racheli manages to do it another time with a lot of persistence, adherence to the goal and talent and therefore she deserves a commendable mention.

Community communication:
Yarkon 70 news:
The Yarkon 70 news release is original and very unique and stands out in the landscape of independent media initiatives. The air pollution corner that wraps up each news release instead of the usual weather corner is brilliant. The Yarkon 70 news does not fall in level from other news editions and they are educated to recruit leading people and leverage issues that do not necessarily find their way to the heart of the establishment media

Minister Gilad Erdan's congratulatory words: the reference to environmental issues is derived from the scope of the coverage

After condemning the statements of his faction members against the immigrants from Africa, and saying that such statements should not be made and that violence should not be encouraged, the minister referred to the event, which he called the most important event of the Hashel Center.

"Media activity in general has a central goal that everyone knows is to be the watchdog of democracy, the decision makers, elected officials all need to know that the public's eye is open thanks to the seriousness and depth of journalists who do important work. In the field of the environment there are two other important roles besides the role of the watchdog of democracy - the first is to raise awareness that in a capitalist world where growth and capital and the maximization of profits and personal achievements are enshrined, the importance of the issue of the environment derives a lot from the amount and scope of coverage and the scope of journalistic engagement with it and I know It is not always easy for journalists to bring environmental issues to the top of the agenda when there are security and other important issues and the journalist has to fight for the environmental item to be included.

"There are not many areas where it is possible to influence the changes in behavior among the public and let them understand that their daily life expectancy is not the right thing for the environment, society as well. In the field of environmental protection, the media has an important role no less than what I do and what the environmental organizations do, and we also experience this with the opponents of the environmental issue. I hope that in the future there will be no need, because in areas such as transportation, energy, and sustainability - the leaders will understand on their own that the policy should be long-term and sustainable, but until that happens, local reporters are of great importance to flood local environmental struggles that then come to the attention of the national media and the work of the government and the Knesset."

"In the last year, the media in general introduced new concepts into the discourse in the State of Israel that were very helpful to me, the office and the environmental activists - the whole issue of social justice interwoven with the issue of environmental justice. The distribution of resources is not only between the government and the capitalists but also the natural resources between those who have greater access to them and those whose hands do not reach them. In the last year, thanks to the cooperation with the media, there will be achievements."

"The gas royalties that will allow more budgetary resources for the future, the restoration of the Dead Sea - burdening the cost of financing on those who make money from it and cause environmental damage. The struggles to save the beaches and leave the asbestos project to the public and assigning the funding to those who caused, from all the ammonia - the removal of dangerous substances, all these issues were born, came to the attention and thanks to the media awareness of the industry, we were able to bring about the fact that the government, the Knesset or any table that had to make the right decision made them."

"The future holds no less great challenges. I say this ahead of the Rio conference, which summarizes what we have achieved in the last 20 years. We have achieved, awareness has increased, but between that and what is needed for the doer, the distance is enormous. The root problem that we all understand is the Western way of life that encourages unnecessary and excessive consumption that comes at the expense of natural resources and the only chance to change the Hertzian direction we are going in is a paradigm shift in the economic field."

"And the challenge is enormous because we know who finances and who controls the media. We will continue to try and put the issue on the agenda and I hope that thanks to brave journalists we will continue the blessing we started and reach greater achievements. Congratulations to the winners on the occasion of winning."
