More imports of genetically modified food products into Israel

Minister of Food and Agriculture Olmert supports the adoption of regulations concerning the inspection, registration and approval of genetically modified varieties, as recommended by the Ministry of Health's Committee for Modern Food

The Minister of Food and Communications, Ehud Olmert, announced last week his support for the adoption of regulations concerning the testing, registration and approval of genetically modified varieties, as recommended by the Ministry of Health's Committee for Modern Food.

However, Minister Olmert believes that since until now, despite all the tests and research done around the world, there is no explicit evidence of a health hazard as a result of the consumption of food in the production process of which genetic engineering was used, then there should be no labeling obligation applied to products that, in the production process of them or of some of their components, have been Use of genetic engineering, since this additional information will not serve the public at all.

Scientific and technological developments in the fields of life sciences have put on the global agenda in recent years ethical, health, environmental and economic issues related to the production processes of genetically engineered food ingredients. Genetically modified food has been consumed in large quantities around the world for a long time in both developing and developed countries, and to this day there is no scientific evidence that its use endangers health. On the other hand, advanced studies are currently being conducted, in which Israeli research bodies are also involved, to develop food with an improved nutritional composition, using genetic engineering technology. It has also been proven that the use of genetic engineering not only lowers the costs of cultivation and production, but also saves on the use of insecticides and pesticides that harm the environment.

The Foreign Trade Administration stated that as part of formulating its position on this issue, the ministry has in recent months carried out in-depth inspections in collaboration with experts from academia, the relevant government ministries and the business sector. The possible consequences of the adoption of the proposed regulations were examined, and among other things, reviews were heard regarding health consequences for the public, the possible effects on the food industry and market in Israel were examined. Also, the suitability of the proposal to the standards that exist in the international arena and in other western countries was checked.

The Ministry intends to continue to closely monitor this issue and, depending on the developments, will come back and consider its position, as necessary. Among other things, the office follows and keeps up to date with international developments in the field - in the discussions held in the Food Product Labeling Committee and in the discussions currently held in the World Trade Organization.
