It turns out that obesity, which is considered a veritable epidemic and the cause of a wide variety of diseases, does not bother the Israeli public enough. A new survey, conducted on the occasion of the scientific conference on nutrition, Nutrition 2008, which will be held on January 16, 2008, at the David Intercontinental Hotel in Tel Aviv, shows that while 35% of the residents of the State of Israel are in their opinion suffering from excess weight, about 66% have not done anything about it and only about 21% are bothered Because obesity harms their health. It turns out that women are more bothered by the appearance of obesity and men more by the health side. The survey was conducted a few days ago, during the second week of December 2007, through the Market Watch research institute (Market Watch), headed by Avinaam Brog, with the participation of about 500 interviewees in a telephone survey.

Olga Raz, director of the nutrition and diet unit at the Tel Aviv Medical Center and the Ariel University Center, who serves as the scientific director of the conference, said that: "It is clear that a lot of work is still ahead of us in education and informing the public, it seems that the Israelis have not internalized the fact that obesity, which is considered a veritable epidemic and the number one factor in the world The generator of a wide variety of diseases, it is an extremely dangerous thing."

At the beginning of the survey, the participants were asked if they thought they were overweight. About 35% answered in the affirmative and stated that they do suffer and about 65% answered in the negative and stated that they do not suffer from excess weight, 3% refused to answer. Among those who are overweight, the place of the women stood out with a slight advantage over the men, about 37% of whom stated that they were overweight, while about 32% of the men reported this. When the age issue of the respondents was examined, it turned out that as the age increases, so does the awareness regarding the weight problem. Among those aged 55 and over, the phenomenon is increasing, about 49% of them assume that they are overweight, while among those aged 24 and under, only 14% think they are overweight.

Olga Raz: "It is interesting to note in this context that in the United States the tendency is different, young women actually think they are fat and want to lose weight more."

As for the differences between the secular and the religious, it was evident that the religious think that they suffer more, about 43% of them claimed that they suffer from excess weight, while only 30% of the secular said so.

Participants in the survey who indicated that they were overweight, were presented with another question in the survey in order to check what is the thing that bothers them the most about being overweight. It turns out that most of those who admitted to being overweight are bothered by their appearance much more than other things. About 35% of them stated that their appearance bothers them, a similar number of respondents admitted that the excess weight harms their health (about 21%) and makes it difficult for them to perform daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, tying their shoelaces, etc. (about 19%) ) about 24% of those who testified to being overweight, stated that it did not bother them at all, but especially the men.
