US President Barack Obama awards IBM and its family of supercomputers, Blue Gene, with the National Medal for Technology and Innovation - the most prestigious award in the US, given to leading innovative entities thanks to their technological achievements.

The president himself will present the medal to IBM representatives, in a ceremony to be held at the White House on October 7. This is the eighth time that IBM has won the American National Medal for Innovation - each time thanks to a unique technological innovation that it presented.

This year, IBM is the only company to win this prestigious award. Together with her, two researchers from the academy and a team of developers from the Adobe company win the individual awards.

The National Medal for Technology and Innovation is awarded every year to individuals, teams and companies for an extraordinary technological contribution to the US economy and the well-being of its residents. The winners are determined by an independent committee of the US Secretary of Commerce and the medal is awarded, as mentioned, personally by the President.

It should be noted that the task scheduling and load balancing system in IBM's Blue Gene computer, which allocates resources to tasks and determines for the system where they will be performed, was developed by two Israeli researchers:
Tamar Domani and Eddie Shmueli from the IBM research laboratory in Haifa.

The processing speed and the enormous expansion range of the Blue Gene supercomputer has allowed businesses and the world of science to deal with a wide range of complex problems and make more informed decisions, not only in the fields of life sciences but also in astronomical studies, climate studies, simulations, computer models and many other fields. IBM's Blue Gene systems have helped map the human genome, are used to research new drugs, protect nuclear weapons stockpiles through simulations of atomic processes, helped design future aircraft, predict weather and climate change, and identify oil reserves.

The system also offers a technological breakthrough in terms of energy efficiency. The construction of Blue Gene systems made it possible to dramatically reduce the physical size and energy consumed in computer systems. Until the appearance of this family of computers, processing carried out today using these systems required an amount of electrical current equal to that of thousands of residences. A list of the 20 greenest computing systems in the world also provides an expression of the processing efficiency and frugality in energy consumption. 18 of the 20 most energy efficient supercomputers are currently based on IBM technology. (According to the list green500.org).

  1. And if Obama uses a Commodore 64, will it change anything?
I wonder why it matters to older people what famous people do and what they use?
I understand that as a child you look for role models but isn't this a mechanism that should fade with time?
It is of course not personal Danish.
    Happy holiday

  2. It's a shame that IBM disappeared from the personal computer scene. Their quality reputation is something that is quite lacking in the field today.

By the way, according to various photos circulating on the Internet, Obama himself uses an Apple MacBook...

  3. For 60 years they have been spelling their name in Hebrew this way. For those who don't know, IBM and Motorola were the first two technology companies to set foot in Israel after the establishment of the state, and this was one of the necessary adjustments at the time.

  4. One of the most amazing and fascinating projects currently being carried out on IBM's Blue-Gene computer is the "Blue Brain" project in which teams of leading brain researchers from all over the world are trying to build a complete human brain running on a computer -

By the way, the Israeli team is considered the leading team in the project and this is of course a great source of pride, we are the only ones who have a direct connection (from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) with the computer and our researchers can run simulations on it remotely, search YouTube for the name "Idan Segev".

A few months ago, a new center for brain research was inaugurated at the university, which is the largest center in the world today in this field, and over 100 million dollars were invested in it.
