In the first part As I remember, I set out to look for studies that tested the validity of numerology, and showed some connection, even a weak one, between the numbers and the happenings in our world. In this record, things heat up. We are getting closer to empirical evidence. pay attention.

I came across a numerologist who tells On her website Because she "conducted large-scale research in the field of numerology and applied it in best-selling books on numerology that she wrote." When I looked, a little excited, for her email address, my eyes came across the words "Legal clarification". There it was written, among other things (emphasis mine, exclamation mark in the original), that she "engages in mystical and metapsychological counseling, which has never been proven scientifically or otherwise! The mystical counseling given is based on personal-family knowledge and on extensive folkloristic knowledge and research, yet not empirically proven, so it should not be accepted as certain, finished and/or absolute."

An email exchange with the same numerologist made it clear that she "conducted a small study on methods" and not a study regarding the validity of numerology.
Oops... wrong interpretation on my part of the words "extensive research in the field of numerology"... I moved on.

So I came across On a site that promises greatness and success:
"The Numerological Institute established the research unit with the aim of strengthening the connection between the theory of numbers and every person regardless of his religion and belief. This is a long-term statistical study, which deals with finding common numerological denominators at the same time as conventional common denominators from everyday life... An example of the subjects tested and approved by the research unit are:

  • The connection between traffic accidents and the license and/or chassis numbers of vehicles involved in them was found and proven.
  • The relationship between the percentage of divorcees and the day and month of their birth was found and proven.
  • The connection between success and/or failure of creating a precedent such as signing a contract, pregnancy, theory test, legal and judicial matters and the timing in which the scenario takes place was found and proven.
  • The connection between an individual's inclination and professional interest in relation to his date of birth was found and proven.
  • The relationship between those with a professional role in the workplace and the character and personality traits identified with them at the numerological level was found and proven.

The results of additional studies carried out by the research unit provide the Numerology Institute with additional and more established tools to direct and advise any person, body and institution in order to significantly optimize themselves on a personal, organizational, occupational, social and economic level."

Finally something that sounds serious! I can't possibly have misunderstood here. This is definitely not an anthropological or folkloristic study. This is what I'm looking for!

I hastened to call that numerologist to get more details about the studies. My heart skipped a beat when he answered me on the other end of the line.
But the excitement didn't last long...
How great was my disappointment when he informed me that he had carried out these studies many years ago, for his own use, and that they had never been published anywhere. Various attempts on my part to gain a glimpse of those studies came to naught. It was disappointing!

At the end of the conversation, the numerologist directed me to look for what I was looking for in the writings of the person who was his teacher, who, according to him, is undoubtedly considered the world's authority in the field. I took his advice.

The bible of modern numerology
This is Matthew Goodwin (a name that can promote success even without connection to numerology), who, unfortunately for many, died surprisingly in 1990. Goodwin was an MIT graduate who worked in the human resources department of an architectural firm. He became acquainted with numerology by chance, from a clerk who worked in the office, after he was impressed by her abilities to score new candidate diagnoses, a success she attributed to numerology. So he began to sink into the subject, and the rest is history...

his books They are considered the best in the field of modern numerology, and they are highly praised, as can be seen from the readers' reviews. Here, for example - "As a professional numerologist, I have a shelf full of numerology books, but none of them are written in such a purposeful way and contain the amount of detail and depth as this book. Of all the books in my possession, I consider this to be "your gift" to which I return every time. It's the only book out there today that shows you how to do blended reading... It's by far the best book ever written on the subject..."

(My adaptation of Rembrandt's 1659 painting)

It will probably be a reliable source for research in the field, I thought to myself, and it will surely contain a historical background that explains how the method was developed, and many more treasures of knowledge that will satisfy my curiosity.

Fortunately, Amazon allows viewing the first pages of the book, which deal with exactly what I was looking for.

After reading familiar words of praise and praise about the power of numerological knowledge to change our lives from end to end, I was moved when Goodwin began to tell: "How was all this information produced? In all areas of the occult, observers have noticed correlations between certain obvious physical phenomena and the inner factors of people... Why does numerology work? There are many explanations in the literature - discussions of spiritual energy, the power of God, the vibrational effect of the numbers. These explanations did not clarify anything for me. I'll be honest, I don't know why numerology works. I don't know if the numbers are simply a theoretical or representative code of power that determines people's behavior. Numerology, like other mystical fields, does not allow, at the moment, a scientific explanation. I can only testify to a consistent match between a person's numbers and his qualities and life experiences, a match that has been approved by other numerologists and their clients."

On what studies does he base his claim regarding this consistent match?!

Goodwin then mentions the Pythagoreans who worked about 2600 years ago in Greece, but adds: "Although some people are comforted knowing that the practice of numerology is already thousands of years old, the connection between modern numerology and the ancients is quite loose."

I remembered all those numerologists who immediately referred me to Pythagoras as an answer to my question about the developers of the method...

"The modern phase of numerology was started by L. Dow Balliett, an American who published several books on the subject at the beginning of the century. Later, Dr. Julia Seton helped popularize the field. Since then, the work of these two women has been expanded by Florence Campbell, Juno Jordan and others, so that today there is little literature on the subject. Unfortunately, most of the material is incomprehensible, outdated and fragmented.”

[It is interesting to note that Another source that I found on the Internet (a source that is cited dozens of times) describes a different sequence of events: first came Dr. Julia Stenton (note the slightly different name) who was born in 1862 and is the one who coined the term "numerology", and only later did L. Dow Balliett come and publish a series Books on the subject, between 1911 and 1917. Even regarding the names of the founders of numerology and the order of their operation, there seems to be no agreement among the experts.]

And then this chapter of the book ended. And the studies? Where are the studies?! There are no studies.

A new numerology is developing before our eyes
But why go as far as an exile and people who are no longer alive, when you can learn how to develop numerology from people here in Israel, who will be different for a long life?

This numerologist expanded the Torah into a new method. here she is Tells about the method: "This is a method that has clear rules and rules that are easy to calculate and learn and can be proven correct in real time."

At the beginning of her book she states: "My numerological method can be proven empirically. From working with hundreds of clients who came for personal counseling I was able to identify problems, advise, direct, encourage and solve problems. And over the years, these solutions have proven themselves to be effective and good."

in a newspaper interview which she published on her Facebook page, she says among other things:
"...as a logical thinking person, I don't deal with things that cannot be proven. Even in my analyzes I do not refer, for example, to karma, because the whole subject of a previous incarnation of one kind or another is always a hypothesis, and I need evidence and proof."

So I knew - I came to the right person!

I asked her about the research she had done to develop the method. Here is what she answered me (emphasis mine):

"Regarding your questions, I did my own personal research work, I asked, I was interested and for the last thirty years people have come back with my life stories that confirm my predictions and I am happy about that. This is my faith, my work and my livelihood and I enjoy daily feedback just like a good psychologist or doctor.

There is no organized research paper that can be proven logically, critically as correct as in any other liberal profession. You can read a serious research paper in the Bar Ilan University library, so I was told, and it supports the chirological method, and positive explanations and reinforcements for the method can be found in the article.

I can't send you stories or proofs or works I made for myself."

Since we are dealing with numerology, the study of palmistry did not interest me at the moment. I did not want to give up the opportunity to trace the process of creating a new numerological Torah, and I continued to ask:

"You say that you developed a new method, by adding an additional number. How did you know what meaning to give things if you didn't do extensive statistical research? Perhaps an opposite interpretation of each number would have yielded equally good results?

You claim quite specific things, such as the ability to predict future events, or for example that children born on the 9,18,27th, XNUMXth, XNUMXth of the month (Hebrew? Foreign?) have genius and a particularly high emotional intelligence. Such a claim is quite easy to check: you have to take enough children who have passed intelligence tests or other psychological tests, and check the date they were born. Either the claim is true, or it is false.
Have you never done such a test? If not, how do you know it's true? And if so - do you have the research data?"

In response, she sent me to read her last two books, study the method, do my own research on it, assured me that I would enjoy its results, and apologized that she was not available at this time to help me with these studies. The correspondence between us was very polite, but I received no answers.

Another numerologist with countless different metaphysical degrees, recently published her second book in the field of numerology, in which she details "insights related to holistic numerology, basics for knowing mental numerology, and a variety of unique methods for future calculations including through engineering forms." In response to my curious inquiry regarding the research done in the field, she answered me:
"Numerology does not need to prove itself since everyone who uses it knows that it is accurate and focused. You do research for the most part on trivial things and not on the result of 1+1. The studies I did are for myself and for my development. I publish them in books and I do not transfer them to the public domain."

Studies - finally!
And then, finally it happened – I located a numerology study! The research was done on a limited scale, and probably does not meet high quality criteria, but this is the only thing I was able to locate... The attempt was to examine whether the number '7' is more common in the names of people who are involved and interested in supernatural phenomena compared to people who are not involved and/or interested in the subject ( At least this should be the case according to numerology, at least one of its many schools of thought). No clear pattern was discovered in the findings that would indicate that such a relationship exists (in fact the representation of the number 7 was even somewhat lacking among that population).

This. This concludes the chapter that tells about the studies I was able to locate.

Concluding remarks
Despite my frantic search for evidence to support the validity of numerology, I came up with pottery. It is possible that convincing studies escaped me, but at least I can safely say that all the numerologists with whom I was in contact had never heard of them, or at least did not bother to reveal them to me.

The abysmal gap between the far-reaching claims and the complete lack of evidence is jarring.
Frustrated? Disappointed with the lack of material? Did you expect more action?

me too. Sorry.

If numerologists are reading this and are interested in doing a collaborative numerology study to try and empirically support numerology, please contact me. It would be a historic precedent.
Some readers may be asking themselves - why is he wasting his time for nothing? Tomorrow he will look for studies that examined whether a black cat brings bad luck, or whether going under the ladder stops growth! I will try to answer that.

One part of the answer is the misleading way things are presented to the general public - as exact science!
If there is empirical evidence - please present it to us, and if there is none, do not make claims about correctness, effectiveness or accuracy.

Another part of the answer is the insight that numerologists may influence the course of my life even if I do not choose to use their services! How is this possible? Think of all those numerologists who offer their services in recruiting and placing employees (a short Google search returns dozens of service providers in the field, and knowledgeable sources told me that such services are indeed provided in practice), who guarantees me that the next workplace I try to get accepted to will not turn me away based on an opinion Numerological?

Some express rather extreme opinions about numerology. Here for example Robert T. Carroll, who summarizes his opinion in the following sentences:

"The attractiveness of numerology, compared for example to palm reading or a crystal ball, is that the numbers give quackery an aura of both scientific and mystical reliability." (From the Numerology entry).

"What numerologists do is play a game, a game with numbers and with people's minds. Sometimes it's amusing, sometimes it's pathetic" (from the entry The law of really large numbers).

I chose to end with the following sentences, which I encountered during my wanderings:

"Our masters have already said that the stupid or the innocent do not die, they only change and their memory is very short,
And I am surprised every time. And why? Because it seems that humanity is progressing in two contradictory paths:

One path is progress and technology that has long passed any wild fantasy of science fiction,

A second path is almost complete intelligent regression.

So how is it possible that so many are still able (usually these are women) to believe that they are bewitched?

I apologize in advance, but this really borders on fundamental and essential ignorance, and the charlatans of sorts celebrate, and you part with a lot of shekels and win serious heartache, at best, in the worst case it may even affect your mental health..."

The words were written in the context of astrology and removing witchcraft, by Numerological!

To understand a little why numerology seems to work, you are welcome to read here: About astrology, On palm reading, On "Cold reading".

* Update - a number of numerologies contacted me following the publication, in an attempt to define an empirical test of a numerological claim. With one of them things matured into research. You are welcome to read details here and participate in it yourself (intended for your parents).

  1. You're right, I often mix up terms, but I can always claim that it's in the protein wave...

  2. Ernest,
What you don't understand is that I don't object to the content of your stuff at all. They are trivial. I was a little confused by your use of certain terms.

  3. jubilee
Why is it difficult to understand what I am claiming, I will return very briefly only to the definition:

Every action we take will never be repeated in the same way.
Every emotion or feeling in us in our bodies is unstable and not only under our control.
Any thinking and decision cannot be repeated in exactly the same form and intensity.

To summarize: every situation we were in, at a certain point in time, we were one-time and unique.

What I don't understand about you Yuval, why do you object to this, when you know very well
the instability of the protein and of the entire world of matter from which we are made.
Maybe you are advocating the existence of an independent and spiritual soul and that is another issue.

  4. That's why I treated it as something individual and not as an objective concept.

You didn't answer my question - do you have another name for the matter?

  5. the other me
If your perception was correct, all the work of the logicians would be unnecessary.
"The act of typing that we perform based on experiences, knowledge, feelings, etc." includes a significant component of distorting the image of reality. This is due to a number of factors, among which we can name the wishes of the heart. Call it whatever you want.

  6. jubilee,

What name would you suggest for the tapping action we perform based on experiences, knowledge, feelings, etc. regarding a given situation? This is an individual action and varies from person to person.
It seems to me that both Ernst and I meant this and not logic as you (or Aristotle defines it).

In my view, logic is not something detached and idyllic but rather individual and closely associated with thinking.
But there may be a semantic problem here.

  7. Serious! I don't know what you mean by the word "logic". For me, this word signifies a well-defined Torah that was already formulated thousands of years ago (for example, by Aristotle). It is a completely consistent set of rules that given any set of parameters within each equation, if you repeat the operation again and again without changing the parameters or the formula, the result you will get will always be the same. On the other hand, in the Bible the word "logic" means playing ("logic on the violin", Psalm XNUMX:XNUMX). But in what you describe I did not find a match for any of these interpretations. If you want to define an inconsistent system, and you don't mean the practice of music, please don't use that word.

  8. The logic is far from consistent, after all it is influenced by emotions which you agree are unstable.

I will give you an example, if you ask a person would you rather live or die, he will answer you all his life, for example
I prefer to live, meaning that his logic on the subject did not turn from positive to negative. And so it seems that
The logic is consistent and stable.

However, if you place a scale in front of him on which he will indicate to what extent he wants to live,
You will see, in my opinion of course, a significant difference in his answers, during his life and perhaps also during the day.

Regarding the time, perhaps you mean that there are changes caused by additional information and events. Without a doubt,
These are changes within the "logic",
I'm talking about changes in feelings in feelings that are not due to external influence.
but only from a change in the amount or structure of matter or energy within some nervous system.

I hope I made my position more clear.

  9. Ernest,
You treat the time factor as if it has no effect, thus jumping to a hasty conclusion as if human thinking (what you call "logic") is inconsistent. If you bring any reference for our consideration, you must include all the relevant parameters in it or, alternatively, explain why you are ignoring some of them.

  10. Honey

I think like you about the essence of emotion - material, electrical, nervous.
It can change, start operating or stop regardless of an external factor
And regardless of the thought, (if indeed it can be defined as an independent entity)

And since logic or any mental or physical action is always fueled by emotions,
That is, products of unstable or permanent substances and energies
    It teaches logic.

  11. Right.

Only your definition of feelings is a bit too broad in my opinion.
It seems to me that you include in emotion also intuition and maybe even a type of thinking.

Emotions in my eyes are a completely chemical thing.

You think about something, like let's say a person who opposes you at work
This thought activates the hypothalamus and it injects peptides into your bloodstream
Your whole body is flooded with them and your heart rate increases, body temperature increases, etc.

It's a whole mechanism that started with a thought. But it doesn't end there.

My definition of emotion is the chemistry that is activated by the thought but not the thinking itself - for that matter, the ability not to let the emotion "overwhelm" you but to think about the whole matter in a balanced way without emotional involvement.

But this is already a topic very far from the post so I will stop here.

  12. I will try to clarify again what I think.

When something certain fits our built-in feelings,
From some biological and/or hereditary basis, from information stored in us that we never checked for correctness
(perhaps some are also hereditary) and so-called facts - things we have seen and experienced.
So we feel this something makes sense.

When you point out that the logic is made of the building blocks that are there and therefore the logic
similar among populations of the same background. You actually claim like me.

  13. Ernest,

Logic tells me that there is no fundamental contradiction between us when it comes to the essence of logic...

And yet - reasoning is indeed individual, but it is based not only on emotion, feelings and reflexes, but also on the knowledge and experience (memory of experiences) accumulated throughout life and allows you to tap into a given situation from them. It is not certain that emotion or physical need are the main components.
In other words - what is wired in your brain, your perception of reality - is unique to you, and this is the ground from which your logic (and everything else) grows.

It is true that there will be great variation in the reference to a certain story - but it seems that you will find agreement among large populations coming from the same cultural background (or religious or any other common denominator, depending on what the story is told) - because most people think within certain limitations arising from the environment in which they live and their logic Made from the building blocks found there.

For example - if the story told is that there is a person who was a carrier of viral hepatitis for 20 years and suddenly recovered without any drug treatment or a person who had 60% necrosis in the heart muscle and recovered (the muscle recovered) without any treatment or surgery.

Presumably this will sound illogical to the vast majority of people
Some will dismiss it as possible but not certain without evidence

And a minority will accept it as true without requiring proof.
Because in their brain wiring there is a perceptual infrastructure that allows such stories to be accepted as fact. Not because they generally believe in fairy tales (or smurfs...) but because they have already encountered cases that prepared them to accept such stories as true or have experienced such stories themselves and therefore the "boundaries" of their neurological box are wider in this context.

  14. Another simple example.

If Moshe on Sunday, for example, wants to logically understand what brought him to want to visit David
He will point out that it is because he has time, Uncle is a nice person, the conversations with him are interesting, the view from his house is spectacular and more...

If Moshe after a month, for example, wants to logically understand what prevents him from wanting to visit David
He will point out that it is because I don't have time, Uncle is not a nice person, conversations with him are boring, the view from his house is repulsive and more...

And in both situations, Moshe is sure that he is reasonable.

  15. Honey

I didn't understand why you brought up the issue of limiting thinking, after all "I think is a sign that I exist"
But I do claim and believe that there is no logic in practice and when we say "it makes sense to me", for example,
It is just an expression of a variety of different feelings, sensations and reflexes,
Of course it is individual, after all everyone has their own feelings.

We do think as you wrote "we all rely on our logic, consideration and intuition"
But this is not true in my opinion.

I appreciate that if we were to choose a certain social economic political story it doesn't matter what we ask for
of the inhabitants of the earth (in an exaggeration) to indicate the level of logic of that story, from one to a thousand, for example
We would get a huge difference, because logic is only a word and we are constantly trying to prove that it is
Not just a word but exactly succeeding..

It is also possible to prove that the same logic weakens, becomes stronger, changes due to fatigue, hunger, drugs, fear, joy and more
    Kind of nonsensical effects.

It is the innocence of young people or young souls like Gilad, to believe in the "wind of sanity" remembers that once too
    I thought so..

  16. Ernest,

Indeed logic is an individual thing.

However, what do you suggest? Ban free thinking except in areas approved by the scientific establishment?
It would be coercion as much as anything else. People have the right to experiment and make mistakes even if they pay a price for it. And where people are willing to pay a price, there are also those who will sell to them.

In the end, we all rely on our logic, judgment and intuition in every subject and about everything.

  17. Honey

It is much, much less relevant in my eyes, see that it exists:
In tribes that have no contact with the introduction and science,
Even before the advent of science.
In children who were not exposed to science only to parents and the environment.

Take for example you me most of the things we "know" believe
They came to us from reading, hearing, television and more and yet this is our reality
    in which we believe.

I "believe" that when it says "it makes sense" it actually means it
May the stew of information and data be seasoned in such a way that it involves the taste of emotion.

Sensible is a synonym for taste in the language of emotion.

  18. Ernest,

    Reporter:
"I claim that if we manage to understand why humans are so "hungry" for feeling secure
And why does that feeling completely nullify what we call reason, fact and scrutiny.
Maybe maybe and once again maybe, we will somehow succeed in reducing the intensity of the phenomenon."

Many people do have a hard time with uncertainties in life, so they look for a higher power to steer their lives for them. To me, it's like trusting an imaginary friend... (and this includes religion, astrology, numerology, tarot cards and everything that removes responsibility for your life).

But here is another reason that is more relevant to me for searching for the miraculous:

Since there is so much that is hidden over the visible in our world, and science progresses with meticulous methods that do not provide answers quickly enough (relatively), what's more, the answers change again and again (since this is the way of science), many people find that this is not enough for them and look for answers elsewhere .

This does not mean that everyone puts logic aside - because logic, logical thinking and in-depth understanding - are not limited to the fields of science alone. It just means that some people are willing to go to areas that have not been mapped by science for all kinds of reasons, and search for themselves - based on intuition, the logical difficulties from what is already known, etc.
In some cases they find truth there and tools that work (at least for them), in some cases they are deceived, and go looking for something else. This is my experience.

To me this is the essence of human curiosity and it will not go away.

  19. Master of the Universe, you may have given the answer. I just add a few words at the end:

"5000 years ago we gave a qualified assessment to the ruler based on the entrails of the goat. I estimate that even then 1/3 of the people really believed that this was the truth, 1/3 of the people made a living from businesses related to lies, 1/3 of the wise who preferred to remain silent and a few who shouted - the king is naked."
Maybe a few "naked king" shouters are needed each period?
This does not mean that the situation will improve, but maybe it will even get worse if there are no ones to maintain some kind of balance?

and another thing. I can testify that during these months several people have already contacted me and said how reading my articles sharpened their thinking even more, made them stop for a moment and question something they encountered, two said that they sit with their child and enjoy light posts about illusions of perception/magic , etc.
For me, this is the biggest compliment, and the motivation to continue. Because I understand that I did manage to reach some people, especially young people, who will continue the gust of sanity in the next generation.

  21. "A man born of a woman is short lived and seven times angry" said the author of the Book of Job. During our short lives we learn from our mistakes and become wiser. If we lived longer than we were allotted, we would become wiser. And if we are life forever, then in general we are wisdom in its embodiment. But what can be done, and in the current state of affairs, we are not wise enough to judge in order to verify or reject opinions arising from the wishes of the heart. The debate held here was held hundreds of years ago and will certainly be held in future generations as if nothing had been said.

  22. Ronen

Menachem, painted a bleak but muscular and strengthening reality.
Obviously, "we" are on the losing side, this is a "fact".
Arabic proverb "When the wind of the oats bends, something like that."

I claim that if we manage to understand why humans are so "hungry" for a feeling of security
And why does that feeling completely nullify what we call reason, fact and scrutiny.
Maybe maybe and once again maybe, we will somehow manage to reduce the intensity of the phenomenon.

Since it is so common and pervasive in humans, it seems to have something to do with
some mechanism of existence and survival.

It should be remembered that each of us in the early stages of our lives,
Feeds on truth and reality completely automatically. no judgment at all,
Similar to blind faith. Maybe this is the stage it happens or starts.

  23. Ronan, if you had seen who and who among those turning to the "X-ray" you would have been shocked.
Yes. They also have military personnel who have to decide on war and businessmen who have to make important economic decisions. Some of these personalities have been exposed in the past and they didn't even bother to be ashamed, and it didn't hurt their public status at all, maybe the opposite.
5000 years ago we gave a qualified assessment to the ruler based on the entrails of the goat. I estimate that even then 1/3 of the people really believed that this was the truth, 1/3 of the people made a living from businesses related to lies, and 1/3 were wise who preferred to remain silent.
Today, with increasingly sophisticated technology trends in high schools, all you have to do is stand in the entrance of a secular technology/science class and watch 1/3 of the students kiss the mezuza upon entering the classroom.

  24. Not Camila. You missed my point. I can certainly derive from those verses an orderly test, which is also physical, that will show whether things are happening or not. The problem is not with the text, which is clear and precise, but with its predictions, which are often disproven and thus help doubters to leave the religion. In order to thwart the schemes of the doubters and to convince the deluded believers to continue believing, the religious leaders had to come up with interpretations for the text that prevented its examination with scientific tools.

  25. Yes, seriously, I really think that by studying science in combination with education for critical thinking, it is possible to significantly reduce such phenomena, to make people use their heads. I do not intend to wait for the day when, God forbid, a Halacha state will be established here in which atheists like me will be persecuted, and I also do not want to arrive at the day when senior ministers and military personnel decide whether to go to war or not, or whether to launch a military operation or not, or whether to launch an important economic program on Relying on advice received from a card reader or an astrologer or a communicator instead of exercising professional judgment, it can lead to disaster.

I think there is definitely room for education here, read Gilad's message again, he summed things up nicely and I agree with every word he said.

  26. I assume that each of us will fulfill the social role that we are "intended" to fulfill, and human society will continue to be vibrant and dynamic.

  27. Ronen

An attack without real decisiveness, strengthens and fails the attacked.

You really believe that the dimensions of the mystical phenomena in humanity can be reduced.

If you look closely you will find that superstitions have been deeply ingrained since the dawn of history.

And if, although it is clear that nothing can be done, you "believe" wholeheartedly that it is possible,

It is a belief similar to superstition to blind faith

  28. Gilad, in your last response, you summed up in a nice short and accurate way my personal opinion on these issues and how important education is here (the "vaccination" operation) as a build-in filtering network against nonsense.

As I said before, throwing up your hands and saying there's no point, it won't help, it's the worst thing you can do, you mustn't give up in this fight because it's in our soul.

Keep up the good work and keep bringing us such excellent articles.

  29. Yuval, just a little clarification

"Answer to the point", I was referring to the great support I received in your answer,
Regarding the presence of the smurfs in our world. And of course an opening for the beginning of the Gargamli discussion
    Finally

  30. Ernest,
The question of whether the Smurfs exist is not interesting, because the answer is known to everyone (such a family lives in the apartment across from me).
On the other hand, numerology is not really interesting either, simply because we still know how to perform single-digit arithmetic calculations without the help of a computer. By the way, there is a one-valued function from astrophysics to astrology and astrology to numerology so that those who know astrophysics and understand black guys and dark energies should not bother with numerology.

  31. Perhaps I am resorting to reduction in a holistic equation, but I would expect that if it is possible to guess my character with the help of the pair of variables (name, date of birth) it would also be possible with the help of my (questions about character + name) to guess the date of birth... or alternatively with the help of (questions about character + date Lida) guess my name...

Anyway, great job! Now you just have to find some Uri Geller and turn him into a sabritai (*reference to the chapter in "Making History" about Geller and Randy)
    P-:

  32. jubilee

I think there is one of the debaters whose heart is in the mystical realm,
It is not fair for him to continue the discussion, and if indeed they were continued, I will ask at the end,
Bring up a new topic, as I suggested before, "Is it possible that the Smurfs actually exist",
I recommend to members of the forum to read at least two books from the series, as their contribution enters the discussion
    This is profound and important.

  33. jubilee,
Can you derive from those verses an orderly test, which is also physical, that will show whether the things are true or not? And you answered yourself in the same response - you cannot, precisely because it is necessary to define when the specified conditions are or are not met. It is precisely for this reason that the two fields are so different.

    Ernest,
Why do you insist on ignoring the essential difference between the use of crystals (for example) and the existence of the smurfs (of course they exist, in animated films and in the form of small and contagious dolls for children - just like God) and this after it was made clear that in the first case a relatively simple experiment can be performed that can provide a rational answer to the question and in the second case It is not at all clear if and how an experiment as above can be carried out, assuming that the claim is that smurfs exist as natural animals like foxes and rabbits. I can't believe you really don't understand that this is a significant distinction, so my only question is why you insist on ignoring it even after it was introduced. If you believe that the distinction is not justified please explain why you think so.

  34. Of course, the articles are not intended to change the minds of devout believers, certainly not those who work in the field for a living.
But let's look at the other end - the person born "part" of beliefs. He acquires them out of a basic tendency (which exists in all of us it seems, who has more and who has less) in combination with the environment in which he lives.
The influence of education at home can be decisive of course, as can the social influence of peers and the influence of the media.
At the same time, there are some years in which there is a transition from unbelief to belief.
I believe that if we equip people with information, and more importantly, with sharpened thinking tools while they are children/teenagers, it will have some effect once they are exposed to one or another belief pathogen.
I see articles like this, lectures, programs on television (if there were any), workshops and enrichment classes in schools - as vaccination actions, which expose people to the pitfalls of thought in a controlled and guided way.
I believe that in the future, this mental immune system will kick in as soon as such a person is exposed to an attack of delusions.
Red lights will turn on for him ("I remember I once read somewhere that it doesn't work at all"), he will dare to ask a question or two ("Who said this is true? Has anyone done research on this? Where can I read about this? Why doesn't this look like an article Scientific?"), or even remember an experiential demonstration ("Wow, I remember, it was a segment - we received horoscopes and it was what it was, and then it turned out that we all received the same text!")
I think the point is clear.
I believe it is possible. Definitely possible. And if 5% of the population moves to the wing of the skeptics, we will be judged.

  35. Strengthening, in addition, it should be remembered that popularity translates into financial allocations (not only private, public as well), imagine that health insurance funds will start funding a visit to an astrologer or a reader in a cafe (this is no more absurd than funding medical treatments that are not supported by evidence, for that matter).
Imagine that in the totality of the considerations of our great leaders, the symbolic meaning of a certain date will be a decisive consideration in the decision if and when to go to war (similar to what they did in the past), is this desirable or proper? A person may believe whatever he wants, this does not allow the service provider (and the beneficiary in this case) to flaunt feathers that are not his.

  36. Ronen,
Although I sympathize with your opinion, I believe that such articles do not influence the inclination of those who want to believe. I believe that if a survey was conducted among the readers of Gilad Diamant's series of articles, it would become clear that none of the readers changed their attitude.

  37. I think it is definitely very important to publish here (and in other places) articles and articles that reveal the true face of mysticism in all its aspects and nonsense, articles of this type educate for critical thinking and open people's eyes.

I have no doubt that such articles have a great and beneficial effect on the way people look at the subject, it is not possible for people to hear all the time only about the so-called "benefits" of various mystical methods and they will not be able to hear the other scientific critical side that pulls the rug from under these arguments .

In my opinion, it is very important to continue to publish eye-opening articles of this type, because giving up and giving up on the fight in advance is the worst thing you can do.

  38. I have a serious problem with numerology, astrology and other vegetables that claim to determine a person's future.

As a diagnostic tool, we come to this world with predisposed tendencies of various kinds - I will give these "teachings" the benefit of the reasonable doubt that there may be something in them capable of diagnosing innate tendencies.

But to say that someone who was born with a learning disability - what will help him deal with it is just changing the name (because the date of birth cannot be changed...)??
(Gilad - for your attention - from the blog of the neurologist with whom you are doing the research: http://mattysternberg.com/adhd/#more-1925)

What about motivation? What about exercises that help develop a neural network that will bypass the disability or reduce its strength? And I won't mention medication because I'm completely against it.

Is a person's fate and future determined by his name and date of birth? This?
In my opinion this is an insult to our complexity as people.

  39. withering

I do not believe that there are those who really think that through in-depth research and analyzes and conclusions at the highest level
We can significantly change the very solid place of the mystical world in the life of humanity.
Although there is no connection between this world and the facts and reality. It seems to be a continuation of the magical fairy tales
And the monsters in the children's books.

In this spirit, in a few weeks we will have a heated debate here, do the smurfs really exist...

  40. Last Camilla, according to your claim that there is no empirical way to test the Torah of Moses.
In at least one chapter of the Torah of Moses (Deuteronomy, XNUMX:XNUMX-XNUMX), the hero of the book poses a test with a predicted outcome: "If you follow the path I suggest to you, you will receive many bonuses detailed in the list below; And if you go the opposite way, you will pay many and painful fines according to the second list detailed below." The listed bonuses and fines are not something mysterious but ordinary worldly phenomena.
The problem with what is written in this chapter is not within us, but with the interpretation that the owners of the book give it. If, for example, even though the country is full of righteous people, there was a drought or an epidemic this year, it is nothing but that one woman baked or that two men tasted the taste of forbidden love...

  41. Ernest,
The difference is that numerology (astrology, use of crystals, etc.) can in principle be scientifically tested to see how accurate it is, if at all. Even if most of us here believe that these areas are a night of nonsense, still the simple question of whether it works is a legitimate question and worthy of exploratory research like Gilead and when carried out. Note that there is no interest in the "theories" behind these methods, but only in the question of how well it works, if at all. The Torah of Moses, on the other hand, there is no way to test it empirically in a serious way, if you have an idea how to plan an experiment that would test it, I'm sure every science lover would be happy to hear about it. It seems to me that the main problem is that these are historical events and that so much information is missing that cannot be reconstructed that it is always possible to come up with some interpretation, however improbable, that will fill in the holes so as to present a desired agenda. For me, the facts related to the existence of parallel mythologies of other nations are enough, and the linguistic analysis of the biblical texts which proves that these are different writers from different periods, and the essential factual errors that exist there, and enough expressions saturated with violence, hatred of the foreigner, the abolition of women, the immoral imperatives are enough to convince me that all These texts were written by people who represented their times, about the missing and incorrect knowledge and the problematic moral norms that were practiced at that time.
Surely you can see the big difference between conducting a controlled and reproducible experiment and between an analysis, however in-depth, of the pieces of history to create a more or less convincing story that there is no real ability to test, can't you?

By the way, in the world of faith there are no reasons, there can be no reasons because faith is not based on knowledge, it is an inner and personal feeling of a certain person. If I wholeheartedly believe in the holy Omicron because he was revealed to me in a dream, then he exists for me and is the truest truth. Any reasoning I give you unless it can be empirically tested is worthless. More than that, every "reasoning" I give you is an indicator of the degree of my lack of confidence in believing in that holy Omicron because if I really believed in it, I wouldn't have to "prove" its unprovable existence by definition through all kinds of hand waving and bickering. In my opinion this is one of the main failings of religious people. Fortunately for us, some of the nonsense can be tested empirically. I hope that such empirical experiments will reduce the pursuit of those intellectual and money-stealing charlatans who sometimes endanger their victims. As long as it is clear that this is only entertainment, I have no problem with them taking place alongside art and sports, and thus anyone who prefers such an experiential entertainment hour at a reader's cafe over a concert or a stand-up show, while understanding that these things have nothing to do with reality, shame on him.

  42. Ernest,
I have a different opinion on the matter. It's a complex subject I know.
In my opinion it is important to discuss these issues, and it is important to try to draw the boundaries between science and pseudo-science.
Many people find it difficult to distinguish the difference, and perhaps, I hope, thanks to such articles, certain people who are "on the fence" will receive certain reinforcements and certain tools, to think, to check, to search if someone else has checked, etc.
    All the rules are simple.
I think that as soon as there are claims that can be investigated, there is a place to investigate them.
I think everyone who read the article, and not just looked at the title, understood very well what the message was.

  43. my father
I think that in Israel there is a constant increase in the amount of "religious" laws and regulations that go against individual freedom,
Advertising, science, work, entertainment, and more. Father, you are not persecuting religious people, you and many like us are the persecuted.
Despite this, I believe that here in a forum like this, it is better to avoid entering into a discussion, on issues that are not in the field of "pure" science, it is difficult, even to define, I know, but one should strive.

    monument,
I think that an attempt to investigate "with scientific tools" the unscientific, mystical, such as numerology,
Predestined for serious failure and may strengthen its position, even when the conclusions negate its truth.
Believers will always claim that this is an action or a conclusion that comes against them.
And when numerology appears next to the word science and research, in an article on a scientific website,
It gets some status as if official. As if factual.

If we examine carefully, we will discover that a large part of the work of those prophets, tellers of fortunes and omens,
They are illegal, crooks for their own sake, and this is not the place to give them a platform.

  44. When I publish an article criticizing the takeover of religion over our lives and the interference of this takeover with scientific knowledge and its dissemination, they claim that I am persecuting the religious, and they do not notice that the negation is of any pseudo-scientific belief, and not only for religious reasons. But when I write about problems in pseudo-science, I am asked why it is and not religion. Maybe you will decide?

  45. Ernst, first of all the question is addressed to my father, who chose to publish the articles.

Anyway, my answer: I think that in the case of religion the boundary is clearer for most people. They can choose to believe it or not.
In the fields of mysticism, the boundaries are more blurred, and sometimes these fields even masquerade as science (as we saw right in this article).
For your information, in the USA about 25% of the public believe in astrology (this is not surprising) but about 10% think it is a full-fledged science! (I don't currently have the link to the survey, it's from memory).
And when so-called mystics start messing with health issues, and masquerade as science with degrees, charts and complicated terms, white coats and colleges - this is already a danger to souls.

  46. monument

Not infrequently, religious people join the discussion here, of course, with their determined and clear opinion
And rightly so, in my opinion, they agree or are hinted at that this is really not the place for reasons from the world of faith,
I don't understand what exactly is the difference between discussing the correctness of the theory of numerology or that of Moses or any field of the world of mysticism.

  47. A moose indeed.
Astrology is completely invalid - you are invited to read an in-depth series of articles I wrote on the subject and published here a few months ago, to learn how invalid it is...
Indeed, effects related to relative age were identified in each yearbook.

  48. I don't know about numerology, but about horoscopes there are quite a few studies that I found in the past.
In the summary of the studies (from what I understood) it appears that there is a connection, but it is apparently not related to luck.
    For example,
Those born in January will be better athletes than those born in December (empirically tested).
Logic says that someone born at the beginning of the year will be physically stronger than someone born almost a year later. When talking about school children, this is very significant. Therefore, the children of the beginning of the year will have a tendency towards sports. And hence also these children have more self-confidence.

These two trends can affect the behavior characteristics of children (and later adults) depending on the month in which they were born.

  49. I try to convince myself with autosuggestion, numerology and acceptance
I am indeed reading at this moment, a dialogue on a scientific website.

  50. Speaking of research…

    Numerology = a useful science for us = 356

Its summaries can already be written.

  51. Arid, entertaining 🙂

After a few minutes of playing I found that "pure vanity" gives 357.

It's amazing how small the distance is between "accurate stable knowledge" and "pure nonsense"...

We'll see what comes out of our research.

  52. I do not understand what the argument is about
Numerology = But it's a good thing and works =356
    Numerology = accurate stable knowledge = 356

    For me that's evidence enough

  53. A numerologist is a limited person who could not solve equations with vanishings in the XNUMXth grade, so he is left with numbers.
And he turns his stupidity into a profession and all the fools join.

  54. Again, there is no way that anyone can guess in which direction to change the data to make the result better/worse (as for example in the case of the Mars effect where calendars listed the sunrise times of Mars and were available to everyone), so I don't foresee a problem with that.
Regarding the names in English, this also sounds problematic to me, since how is it determined whether to translate with "Y" or without "Y" for example...

The data accumulates lazily, I guess you just have to use a little more patience.

  55. Maybe you should contact the forums abroad (in English) at the same time, it will probably increase the pace a bit.... Also, I am not sure that it is worth or desirable to state in advance that the data should be used to test the validity of the theory of normology, it is possible that the very knowledge may create a bias as you yourself detailed in the article about astrology and how parents "tuned" the date and time of their son's birth to fit the astrological chart.... (I think it's called the "Mars effect") In our case it could be writing the name in full or missing spelling or writing an inaccurate date of birth (for example if the birth began before midnight and ended after midnight).

  56. This is the opportunity to emphasize: data from children without any disabilities are also required for research.

I applied to two relevant forums with a request to post, in one of them they refused on the grounds that they deal only with conventional methods, in the second I posted but the response was extremely sparse.
I tried in a few other forums, as well as the numerological mati, but in general the response is unfortunately low.
It seems that a basic familiarity with us is required for people to participate (even at the level of "the one from the blog I read doing research").

  57. It might be worth contacting a number of dedicated forums that deal with the issue of learning disabilities (there must be a few in Orange and other places, maybe a dyslexia forum?) to get a larger concentration of data on children with learning disabilities in the sample.

  58. The question is who from the list you mentioned claims to be valid, and how much money does he charge for providing "correct and accurate" information?

  59. Religion and football and the choir are also invalid, and also all the other amusements and songs and all the stand-up, most of the world is invalid...

  60. Football is not valid either, coir that costs 470 dollars for 50 grams is not valid, God is also not valid, people are having fun, this whole stand up is not valid...

  61. I participated in the research through the link at the end of the article by sending the details about my children and even sending the link to the mailing list of my daughter's parents (F).

  62. The formula was built by the numerologist with whom I conduct the research, it is not known to other numerologists.
Her publication will be conditional on numerological consent. I can assure you that the calculation is very complex and multi-step, and there is no conceivable way that anyone could guess what the calculation is being done there.
There are several ways of controlling the data collection that I will detail in the article summarizing the experiment.

You are absolutely right in all the questions and the meticulousness in the details. The devil is in the details.

  63. Another question, do you have a way to verify that the data that was sent to you (via email? anonymously?) is really real data, and not fictitious data that was pre-adjusted to the normological formula so as to indicate a match? How is such a possibility taken into account in your research? How do you make sure that normologists who may read your message and who have an interest in tipping the scales in their favor do not try to influence the results?

Of course, all my comments are "peer reviewed" and I have no intention of sounding snooty or fussy, but someone like you knows how important it is to pay attention to these points in studies of this kind.

At the time of publishing the results and the description of the experiment, do you also intend to detail the exact formula by which you determined the results? I would like to see what the weight of each parameter is in deciding the final result and is there really, as you say, no chance to calculate it in your head unconsciously.

  64. Ori,
I am aware of the biases you mentioned.
The goal is to approach (or pass, also with your help - the readers here) the 100 figures. This is an amount that should definitely be sufficient for the purpose of the analysis that was performed.
The "correct" definitions were carried out and agreed upon in advance, regardless of the collection process.
The results are not checked during collection.
The formula is very complex, and there is no way to calculate it "in your head".
Data about which there is doubt is cleared without hesitation, according to the defined criteria (but with heartache for the loss of another data collected with great effort).

Believe me I am aware of all these biases, and I believe that under the circumstances this experiment is performed quite reasonably. All the details and considerations will be published as mentioned.

  65. Gilad Thank you for your answer, according to the description you wrote I definitely see several possible problems with the way the experiment was set up:

"Once a sufficient amount of normal data accumulates", who decides when there is already enough normal data? How do you decide? This already sounds too vague a definition to me, the decision when to stop the experiment may be influenced by the data itself and this in turn may affect the results, think for example of a person who claims that he can control the power of his mind on the way a coin falls on a tree or a field. The coin is tossed 5 times and a tree comes out of it 4 times, then he says "stop"! I have enough data here I proved my point!

"After filtering all the uncertain cases", again, here too there is definitely a chance that your filtering will be influenced (even unconsciously) by the data itself that is in front of you, the very fact that the formula is already sitting in your head may mean that during the filtering your brain will calculate and know in advance whether the child you are Confused about which group to put him in (or not to put him in any group) is he healthy or sick, and this may affect your decision in which group to place him.

These things may definitely affect the results, especially in a research experiment of this type, in which the amount of data will probably be small (you probably won't have thousands or hundreds of data....).

That's why I again strongly emphasize the great importance of conducting a "double-blind" experiment, this is not just a cliché.

Try to recall the famous experiment of the effect of the hemopathic medicine on white blood cells and how much the result was affected by the fact that the people who examined the cells under a microscope knew in advance which cells were given the hemopathic medicine and which cells were given only water.

This aspect must not be underestimated.

  66. Gilad, it is quite clear to all of us that numerology is a sin, like astrology and chirology, in my opinion the community of science readers will enjoy much more design on fields that sound more logical, but whose scientific reliability is questionable, such as acupuncture, and even psychology.

  67. Uri, you are right in all your comments, and in general the whole subject of disabilities has problems (because even the official diagnoses are far from being the "pure truth"), but for various considerations this is what was chosen.

At the same time, in our case the research is very simple. The numerologist defined *in advance* the formulas for calculating "disability". There is no need to build a map for each one separately. I built an Excel file that calculates this, which was approved by her. The data is stored transparently for both of us.
As soon as a sufficient amount of normal data is accumulated (after filtering all the uncertain cases as defined and agreed in advance) they are placed in the Excel file and the answer is immediately drawn up. This is on the edge of the fork, everything will be detailed in the article that will summarize the experiment, including the precautions, and its limitations.

  68. Oops, the message was accidentally sent to me before I finished writing it, I've already heard of cases in the past where people gave a card reader or an astrologer or a caller personal details over the phone in preparation for an appointment, and that caller took advantage of this to look for information about the man in databases that were available to her and used it in time The meeting, this point is also important and worth paying attention to.

    Successfully!

  69. Excellent! There is no doubt that you are the Israeli James Randi 😉

As you know (and I think you have referred to this several times in your articles as well) it is very important in experiments of this type that the experiment be a "double blind" experiment, meaning that she will not know whether the child for whom she is making the map is sick or healthy, but neither will you!

If you know in advance whether the children about whom you are passing the data to the normologist are sick or healthy, you may unintentionally arrange the list in a certain order that will make it easier for her to know or hint to her about the results, for example you may arrange it so that most of the healthy children appear at the top of the list and the sick at the end, you You may even without noticing hint to the normologist in the twin conversations between you which children are sick and which are healthy.

Therefore, I think it is very important that you make a complete separation between the children's names and dates of birth, and the sick/healthy part, and also make sure that the list is well mixed in a completely random way, perhaps with the help of a computer program, or by taking notes from a well-shaken box.

Also note that there are, in my opinion, a number of potential landmines in the wording of the questionnaire, there are answers that may be interpreted one way or the other according to the world view of the reader, it is very important to decide even before the results from the normology arrive, if the wording written in the free text part is considered a healthy or sick result, otherwise results The normal map may affect your interpretation.

One last thing, you should make sure that the children's data may not be found in some hacked medical database available over the Internet, through which you can tell by a simple search whether the child is healthy or sick by a simple search and the shadow

Hope you take these important things into consideration.

    Successfully !!

  70. I will go back and emphasize the interesting developments: following the publication of the article on my blog, a brave numerologist contacted me, and right now the research is in full swing.

You will find more explanations here: http://wp.me/p1K6uX-xv

In order to reach statistically significant results, we need as much data as possible.
    Anyone with children can participate.
The whole process takes only 2 minutes, and you have made your contribution to science!
At the end of the study (soon, but depending on the rate of data collection) I will publish its results, whatever they may be.
You are welcome to forward the request to friends and relatives, and together we will make history!
