No one is too small to make a difference in the environment

Those who care about the global environment have to face the double challenge of preserving biodiversity and stopping global warming "by putting out a fire by pouring one drop of water at a time".

In recent months, three reports have been published in the world, each of which is related to one of the decisions in the Rio Convention (/).

Those who care about the global environment have to face the double challenge of preserving biodiversity and stopping global warming "by putting out a fire by pouring one drop of water at a time".

In November, a report was published by the Living Planet Report, of World Wildlife Conservation Organization (WWF) which documents the biennial discussions at the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity. The report presents a bleak, disturbing and frightening picture of the loss of sixty percent (60%) of the animal populations out of about 4,000 species surveyed.
While UN bodies are trying to mitigate the water shortage and the processes of desertification, An atlas is published that describes the Midabu processR. New atlas on global desertification.
A third report that was published at the same time is a special climate report of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which made waves all over the world because of the announcement that we only have 12 years to stop climate change due to global warming, and no - irreversible changes will be caused that will change the environment to a place where it is doubtful that it will be possible to live in it.

The result of the reports combined with evidence and research resulted in a series of news stories about the apocalypse that is already happening today. Thus was the news that: the years 2019 and 2020 will be the years in which it will be determined at what level our natural environment will exist and if it will be possible to live in it.
Despite the flashy headlines and the attention of the world media directed to climate change and the disappearing biodiversity, the activity to mitigate the change and stop the extinction is approaching zero. For example, 2018 is considered the worst year for equatorial forests, in which pollutant emissions increased by 2.7%.

In order to moderate emissions and stop extinction, there is a need for a fundamental change in the approach of human society and its behavior, it is necessary to change the way in which water, food and energy are provided to a population of approximately 8 billion individuals. A profound change is needed in the way human society invests its resources. The direction must be changed so that the investments do not harm the natural environment and do not cause continued emissions of pollutants.

It is clear that in order to stop the damage to biological diversity and moderate the warming, the cooperation of all human populations wherever they are is necessary. When everyone does their best. Already today there are signs of change when food and cosmetics suppliers announce plans to stop deforestation for the purpose of developing oil palm plantations. Some countries are taking the lead in declaring a decade to be dedicated to the restoration of the natural environment. Some capitalists have turned to governments demanding action. In order to bring about change, there is a need for public activity and leadership not only by companies, governments or capitalists, but by everyone. For example, the Swedish girl who declared before the UN representatives: "I learned that you are never too small to make a difference."
It is not easy to bring about change in business, governments or investments, but it is possible to change our lives. It is possible to bring about a change in relation to the environment with others. For example, everyone will ask themselves and those around them how the tax money is invested? Is the investment of our money linked to businesses that cause deforestation? Do our pension funds invest with an environmental mindset (most don't)? Or, God forbid, invest in the development of mineral fuel projects instead of renewable energy?
We can act and convince others so that at events there is no food waste and no use of plastic utensils.
There are many examples where each and every one of us can do for a change. Even if it seems to us that our strength is weak, even if we can only carry one drop. It is important that everyone does everything they can to put out the fire.

After all this, I will repeat what is now clear and accepted among many circles in one form or another: it is appropriate that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there should be control of the human population for the sake of the environment.

  1. to the gatekeeper,

Despite your efforts for which I thank you from the bottom of my heart and clarify my lack of understanding, I still cannot understand:
Why is an article published on a science news website that is neither news nor science

  2. I am surprised to read the article and find out that Dr. Assaf Rosenthal does not mention the issue of the animal breeding industry for food and its consequences on the environment.

Recent research finds that the biggest thing a person can do to reduce their burden on the environment is to stop eating meat. Why is this not brought to the public's attention?

The animal husbandry industry releases more greenhouse gases than the entire transportation sector worldwide (including airplanes and ships), rainforests are cut down to make room for monoculture crops such as soybeans and corn that are used as food for the animals, the use of huge amounts of fertilizers high in nitrogen and phosphorus for those crops and the feces and urine of owners Life reaches the rivers and from there to the ocean and creates dead zones.

  3. Response to Yaniv,
"I didn't understand" sums up your response, the rest is unnecessary, since not everything is innovation and invention,
The article is indeed "emotional" since in addition to an informed approach the writer has feelings,
Since you "didn't understand" then an explanation, if you and many others do small things for the environment,
such as separating garbage, saving water and electricity, shopping wisely for what is needed and not for published nonsense,
If you and many others buy local produce and avoid purchasing products that harm the environment to produce them,
If you and others will use accessories and clothes until bridal instead of changing them every season or every year,
If you and many others behave like that girl or like others who demonstrate and strike for the environment,
If you "didn't understand" read the list and Assaf's response again and again
Then hopefully you will not only understand but also take action...

  4. I did not understand what innovation in the scientific and environmental field is presented in this article

What does it contain besides its emotional face to the public that does not innovate anything and how is it different from similar writings that preceded it?

  5. Dr. Rosenthal,

The only socio-economic alternative that puts the environment at the center is a resource-based economy most of us know from Jacques Fresco's Venus Project. You can use your column to bring her to public awareness and gain her support. The immediate action that needs to be taken is to stop the planned obsolescence of products while saving tremendous energy and resources.

  6. To emphasize the need for everyone to do as much as they can
I opened the list in the story (which the editor deleted)...
    below:
Along with deadly fires that recently broke out in South Africa
A story spreads about a girl scout during a fire
    When many animals stand helpless
The little scout flew back and forth to a water source
And every time one drop drips on the fire,
    When asked why?
She answered that she was doing everything she could to help put out the fire...
