The next generation of magnetic computer memories

A study by a group led by Prof. Lior Klein from the Department of Physics at Bar Ilan published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters will help in further miniaturization of magnetic memories while significantly increasing their efficiency

A small but big memory... in the last decades the method of saving information on magnetic materials was the same. In all applications, starting with a hard disk in computers and ending with audio and video tapes, the information is "written" by activating a magnetic field from an external source that causes a certain magnetic area to change its direction. This is actually how the requested information is saved. As we know, over the years the demand for the minimization of memories increases, but the major disadvantage of this method is the lack of sufficient focus on the area on which you want to "write" the information, and as a result, the writing of one magnetic area may also affect adjacent magnetic areas. This problem worsens as the density of magnetic memories increases.

A new writing method developed at Bar Ilan University is able to change the direction of the magnetic field in a targeted manner and without environmental impact at all! The new method will promote a significant miniaturization of the magnetic memories and advance them into the nanometric domain. The research group that developed the revolutionary method is headed by Prof. Lior Klein from the Department of Physics at Bar Ilan University.

The method is based on the flow of a magnetically polarized current (having a single magnetic direction) into the magnetic region itself. The study by Prof. Klein and his team, published this month in the prestigious scientific journal Physical Review Letters, demonstrates writing using a magnetically polarized current on a metal known as "strontium ruthenium", with the greatest efficiency by several orders of magnitude relative to what has been known so far. "The results of this research are the beginning of a revolution in the miniaturization of magnetic memories that we have not yet known. Soon we will be able to develop a new generation of magnetic devices based on nanometric magnetic regions, which are denser and more efficient", explained Prof. Klein.
