An espresso machine and a Thanksgiving meal are among the things the new crew members brought to the International Space Station

The coffee machine was brought by the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristaforti. In recent years, NASA has invested many resources in extending the shelf life of food intended for long space missions such as a manned mission to Mars and to reduce the size of the packaging. The agency also uses the International Space Station as a laboratory to study growing plants such as lettuce in space

While most Americans are roasting turkeys and emptying containers of blueberry sauce, space station crew members will be opening bags of frozen, steamed, and thermally stabilized food.

Their menu includes traditional items of the holiday with slight changes to adapt them to the space - smoked turkey that has been screened, a candy consisting of green peas and mushrooms. Yes, the meal will be served with corn bread that was used by NASA a long time ago, and you just need to add water to it. The dessert will be a stabilized pastry containing cherries and blueberries.

Team members include Commander Barry (Butch) Willmore of NASA, Flight Engineers Terry Wirts of NASA, Anton Shkapelrov, Alexander Smokutaev and Vilna Serova of the Russian Space Agency, as well as Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforti, representing the European Space Agency.

Astronauts who will stay in the space station in the future will be able to enjoy another food of the holiday - sweet potatoes. This plant will be one of the plants selected for cultivation in deep space missions. It provides an important source of energy - carbohydrates, as well as beta-carotene.

The sweet potato will be able to adapt to a controlled environment where it will be illuminated by artificial sunlight. It is also suitable for growing from the seedling stage. The tip of the thread is the sensitive part. It senses hormones all over the plant and encourages the development of the roots, which is important because the roots are the ones that turn into sweet potatoes. The nettles, if collected at a young age, are delicate and can be added to a salad and improve the benefits of the plant.

Their luggage also includes 15 boxes of caviar weighing 30 grams each, fruit (apples, oranges and tomatoes), frozen and dried milk, and tea. The personal luggage of the Italian astronaut also contains a special espresso machine designed to work in the low gravity conditions of the space station.

Scientists believe that most of the food items in the food system on long missions will resemble those used on the space station. Advanced processing and packaging methods will be required to provide long shelf life and improve nutrition in long missions. Stored food and salad plants will be used in the first stages of the stay on other planets until a permanent structure for habitation is built.

Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforti was selected for the mission two years ago and traveled around the world to train in all the elements of the station - one of the most complex structures ever built. She learned how to control the station's robotic arm, how to handle emergencies and how to perform all the science experiments for scientists on Earth.

The last obstacles on the way to the flight were the final tests for training in flying the Soyuz that would take them into space and a two-week isolation to avoid bringing unwanted passengers to the station (bacteria).

  1. I did not check who the manufacturer is, basically, the number of articles in which brand names appear is negligible compared to the amount that is sent to me, and only what is there is no choice and the article has a content value that cannot be denied. Want to advertise a commercial entity - contact the marketing manager. He will give them a fair price offer but not zero.

A quick check shows that Nespresso is not the manufacturer of the coffee machine on the space station.
And it's good that you accuse someone of bribery.... Neither checks nor slanders.

    You're a little nasty, aren't you?

  3. The espresso machine in space is an attempt to advertise Nespresso and is the reason why:
Espresso machine works on capsules at the end of use get stuck with aluminum waste which can be recycled and not discarded
The Nespresso company needs to reinvent itself because last year its patent expired and many competitors emerged
What they do is take advertising agencies and they in turn invent spins and here is one of them
Did that astronaut get half a million under the table? we will never know
The reason the name Nespresso does not appear is that there are restrictions and it is forbidden to violate them openly, so if you follow the gray line, maybe a picture of the device will appear, and maybe it won't be mentioned, we'll wait and see
I would send a coffee miracle instead
