The planet most similar to Earth was discovered 20 light years away

The planet, Glace 581g is only 3 times larger than Earth and is in the habitable zone of its system. It is part of a system containing five other planets - the record so far for solar systems outside our solar system

Super Earth Gleise 581c - another planet in the system where an Earth-like planet was discovered in the habitable zone
Super Earth Gleise 581c – another planet in the system where an Earth-like planet was discovered in the habitable zone

An interesting planet was found using the sophisticated telescopes at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii. It has a total mass of 3 times that of Earth and it orbits its sun in the middle of the Goldilocks zone - a potential habitable zone where liquid water can be preserved on the planet's surface.

If confirmed, it could be the most Earth-like planet discovered so far and the first case of a planet that could support life. The discoverers also said that the leaf findings may show that our galaxy contains many planets that may harbor life.

"Our findings suggest that this is a suitable case of a planet with the potential to harbor life: says Steven Vogt from the University of California, Santa Cruz. "The fact that we were able to locate the planet so fast and so close to the solar system tells us that planets of this type must be common."

Vogt and his team from the Lick-Carnegie Extrasolar Planet Survey actually discovered two planets orbiting the much-studied red dwarf Gleis 581, where four planets had already been discovered before. Now with six known planets, Gliese 581 holds the solar system most similar to our own. It is a total of 20 light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Libra, a very short distance in astronomical terms.

The most interesting planet is Gliese 581g which has a mass 3 times that of Earth and orbits its star in less than 37 days. Its mass suggests that it is likely a rocky planet, with enough gravity to sustain an atmosphere.

The planet is also tidally tied to its sun, meaning that one side always faces the star and is in eternal sunlight, while the other side of the planet is in perpetual darkness. According to Vogt, one effect of this fact is the stabilization of the surface climate. The life bearing area of the planet is on the terminator - the line that differentiates between the light and shadow side, where the temperatures decrease as you approach the dark side and rise as you approach the light side.

"Any form of life that develops can choose between several environments, depending on the longitude," said Vogt.

Another planet is found in the system, and as mentioned four more were discovered earlier, and a debate arose as to whether they are in the habitable zone or not. Two of them are at the edge of the living area - one on the hot side (planet c) and the other on the cold side (d). While some astronomers still believe that planet d may contain life, if it has a thick atmosphere with a strong greenhouse effect, which may cause it to heat up. others are skeptical. The new planet, g, is right in the middle of the life strip.

"We have planets on both sides of the life band - one too hot and the other too cold and now we have one in the middle, right in the right place," said Vogt.

The researchers estimate that the average temperature on the surface of the planet Gleise 581g is minus 31 to minus 12 degrees Celsius. Actual temperatures will vary from searing heat on the side facing the star to freezing cold on the dark side.

If Gliese 581g has a rocky composition like Earth, its diameter may be 1.2-1.4 times that of Earth. Earth's gravity should be similar or slightly greater than Earth's, so that a person could walk upright on the surface of the planet." Vogt said.

The planet was discovered using the HIRES spectrometer (designed by Vogt) in the KC-1 telescope, an instrument that also helped measure the planet's rotational speed. The gravitational tagging of the planet causes periodic changes in the radial velocity of the parent star. The multiplicity of planets causes complex fluctuations in the star's motion, and astronomers use sophisticated analyzes to locate planets and determine their orbits and their orbits.

According to Vogt, considering the relatively low number of systems discovered so far, the discovery of a planet in the habitable zone came quite quickly.

  1. To those reacting against Judaism - here is a rebuttal to your nonsense. First of all you are little people who live on hate. And for your information, there are rabbis who are doctors and even professors in physics. and also in mathematics. One of the leading researchers in mathematics in Israel is ultra-Orthodox (Professor from Bar Ilan for those who know). Much more intelligent and educated than you. Collaborate with the best researchers in the world. So enough with this hatred and lies against Judaism.

  2. For the disgusting reactions against religion-
First of all, that's not how you express yourself. It's disgusting.

Secondly, according to Judaism it's really not a big deal if there is intelligent life outside of God.
Rabbis have already addressed the issue years ago and said that if there are intelligent extraterrestrials, they are obligated by the 7 mitzvot of the sons of Noah.
Like the Gentiles in our world here.
    that's it.
It's really not a big deal.

  3. We must reach this planet, only it is tens of thousands of years away from us.
I am currently writing a special story called: Journey at ZETA Speed.
If you want to read it, wait until I send you a message that it is readable to all readers.
Pleasant reading and one more very important thing for you to know about the story:

  4. When they reach the platform of a spacecraft that flies at the speed of light, they will reach this planet in 13.3 years, which is also quite a bit

  5. In other words, you propose to close the astrophysics classes in all universities because maybe the whole universe we see no longer exists. Believe me, even if they take all the money invested in space in all the universities and space agencies together, and distribute it to the poor, it will not give more than an extra $10 per poor person per year.

  6. A friend of idiots instead of dealing with the urgent matters at hand to save the earth from destruction they are dealing with twenty years or with the possibility that this planet may no longer exist

  7. Ruhamiel (Erichama):
It's not that "now" I'm saying that I do agree with you.
I kept saying the same thing, except that your words do not express your agreement with yourself.
You talked about the degree of sophistication of their interpretations and I am talking about the degree of stupidity in them.
All your arguments are meant more for the ears/eyes of people who have not yet been brainwashed. Those who watch the debate here and try to decide what is right. For them the reasons are important and for me the brainwashers are just a tool to make it clear to swingers where this brainwashing is degenerating.
When you talk about sophisticated interpretations and the fact that findings from the real world do not interfere with religion, you are confusing exactly the people for whom all the effort is invested (because for them, when they are trying to decide whether to be religious or not - religion is not "the religious people ” but the ideas of religion and a contradiction with reality certainly circuses the ideas of religion even though it does not affect Zombies).

  8. Michael Rothschild:
So if you agree with me then what is the question "are you serious?"

When I said that the tin wall will not bend, I did not mean your vision and opinion. As far as the religion itself and its believers are concerned, your opinion is not really of importance or relevance (don't take it personally). I meant to say that the religions will not be harmed by the discovery of aliens and the believers will not renounce them.
On the other hand, if you now say that you do agree with me, then you are exempt from starting and arguing with another secularist who did not bother to read the things.
I probably don't understand the meaning of the phrase "are you serious?" I will go look for all the multitude you have written here and improve my knowledge.

  9. Ariel (Ruchma):
You have to read the text you are commenting on - and this - even before you comment.
Did I write that the religious will be convinced? After all, I wrote exactly the opposite - so are you serious?
All the crazy interpretations of the holy books do not improve the situation.
On the contrary - they present the religion in its darkest state.
After all, there is no conceivable interpretation that would cause a rabbit to conjure up a cow or a cow and a tigress to come out of a common source and it is really a joke to see these companies trying to convince themselves (and what a joke - to convince others!) with their stupid interpretations.
Not to mention that if you rely on the words of the sages, you get much more nonsense than there was in the Torah alone.
I've already written a lot about it here on the site and I don't have the strength to start arguing again with another secularist who didn't bother to read the things.

  10. Michael Rothschild:
    Are you serious?
Do you really think that as soon as aliens are discovered, millions of Christian believers, Jews and Muslims will renounce religion, look up and realize that there is no God?
Religions in general and the Judeo-Christian religion in particular have survived 2000 years of changes in perception, discoveries, technological developments, lifestyle changes, etc. They acclimatized. Adjusted themselves but always always managed to keep their center.
I agree with you that there are many contradictions in the holy books. But all you have to do is sit down and read the commentators. People who ended up being pretty brilliant who found all sorts of solutions, clarifications and methods to go between the drops for almost any contradiction you can find.
Between us, these are solutions and loopholes that would not embarrass any tax lawyer.

    The story of creation.
Why won't he get along with aliens? Because they are not mentioned there? So what? If I had time and patience, I would open the book of Genesis right now and find there a mention that God created the aliens just as it is mentioned there that he created the dinosaurs. And if it's a little difficult for me to do it, I can always turn to "the one-that-never-fails", the gematria.

There are millions in the world if not more who fall under your definition as "the brainwashed believers that no fact will confuse". Don't underestimate them. They are not rootless imbeciles. And they have the best tinsmiths in the world.

  11. Ariel:
    seriously?
And what about the creation story? Does he get along with aliens? Were they also given to us to control them like the other animals? And what if they control us?
The truth is that in order to distort the tin of religion - it is enough to read the holy books about the multitude of contradictions that contradict reality. After you read and understand this, there is nothing left for religion, nor is there anything else left of it.
It is true that the brainwashed believers will not be confused by any fact, but those who think will know to be careful.

  12. There is no way to get there! At the speed of light it will take 20 years and the speed of light is 9.6 trillion km

  13. Once and for all I would love to know why the discovery of extraterrestrial life (intelligent or micro-organisms) would be a severe blow to religions.
That the chosen people are not alone?!
Even today he is not alone. There are other nations. There are living beings that are not human, i.e. animals.

Aliens will be considered by the religion as "non-humans" who are not of the animal type. Surely there will be those who will not be offended by the definition "animals". But religion will not bend even the tin.

  14. How come there is not even one response to the most important article that has ever been here

  15. This discovery will not be a severe blow to Darwinism. First of all, it will be a severe blow to religions, that the chosen people are not alone.
Second, there can also be a common origin. At least between Mars and Earth.

  16. Speaking of prophecies. In my opinion they will find life in the form of microorganisms in the future. The scientists will be surprised how close they are to the life form on Earth, and the discovery will be a severe blow to Darwinism...

  17. Oh, and another 30 years to return an answer, that's almost 60 years

So leave it as a cancellation, return them

  18. It's a waste of time, fly a spaceship there already. 25-30 years from now we will be there and there will be answers

  19. "Turns around its axis in the same cycle as the cycle of rotation around the star..."
    Thanks Aria.
But still, how do you discover a cycle of rotation around the axis of a planet?
And how does a spectrometer help with this (as sensitive as it may be)?
Does the planet reflect light with sufficient intensity? (despite its relative proximity).
According to what I understand, the discovery of planets comes from gravitational considerations (seeing their star moving in cycles), or in the event that their axis of rotation around the star is in a vertical direction to their direction towards 'Earth', their shadow can be seen passing over the surface of the star as a black dot.

  20. How beautiful, I'm dying for them to find a star with water and life.
    One of humanity's fantasies.

When the first human spacecraft landed
Galileo will wait for us with his telescope and tell us you have been a little late.
And Einstein will smile, you didn't use the theory of attribution.
Well, the main thing is that you are here. And now you have to find a way to cross the universe.

  21. I am interested in selling lots in our new star.
    Any readers interested in purchasing?
Knowledge surfers are guaranteed a special price.

  22. to me:
Why don't you read what was written in the previous comments?
Your question has already been asked (7+8) and also received an answer (12)

  23. Yoav
The professor clearly believes this and is leading you and others to believe it.
But is this a proven fact? Or is this just speculation?
Everyone is allowed to believe what they want.
If you don't want to be caught in a lie, you too will start predicting what is in the stars
Beyond the solar system or what will happen in 100 years.

  24. It's amazing that there are no responses to this very fascinating piece of news.
Is there a plan to explore the new planet in depth with bigger budgets?
We will be happy to hear updates on the matter.

  25. I wonder what the doss will babble about their delusional God when science discovers that life is not as rare as we thought, but that the universe is infested with life like garbage..
Surely even then they will have all kinds of ridiculous and unconvincing excuses..
    Chronic stupidity.

  26. Hanan:
    Someone must know.
I am not the same someone 🙂

    Yehuda:
I don't know where life can originate.
Do you know something you are hiding from us?

    Anonymous 3:
We do not know how to bring a probe to such a high speed and it will take a long time before we can do it.
Besides - even after the probe arrives - it will take another 20 years before we know what it discovered (and this is assuming that it will discover whether or not there is life there right away.
And how will the probe know if there is life there?
In order for her to discover this herself, she must have a very high intelligence.
Notice how long it took us to find out if Mars - our neighbor - has water.
We know what water is and we have a good relationship with the vessels that are orbiting on Mars, yet human involvement was needed to decide. This was possible because communication with the tools is possible but human intervention was required even for them to be able to move safely in the field.
In order to create a probe that can check for itself if there is life on a distant planet, we must make a lot more progress in the field of artificial intelligence, and also define for ourselves better than life.

    Question (4):
This whole story with life extension is usually misinterpreted.
Those who move faster and/or are subjected to stronger gravity - will appear to us as those who live longer.
From his personal point of view - he will not have enough time to do more in his life because all his metabolism, his movements and his thoughts will also progress more slowly. He will feel exactly the same longevity that he would feel here on Earth.
Be that as it may - the orders of magnitude of gravitation and speed are not such as would allow even us from here - to notice a change in life expectancy there. These are fractions of seconds.

    trail:
    impossible.
Also because we don't know how to build spacecraft suitable for such a long journey at a reasonable speed, also because a person will die from the radiation they will absorb on the way, and also because in order to be justified in claiming that we can get there, it is necessary to be able to send a serious amount of people there. Even if we had all the technology necessary to cover the distance in a reasonable amount of time, we would not be able to send more than a tiny delegation there.

And by the way - who would volunteer to man such a delegation for a journey from which there is no return to a planet that by the time we reach it might destroy itself? After all, nothing special will happen in 2012 so we can only send idiots there and then - what will the aliens who meet them think of us? Are we all like that?

    Dean (7):
    These temperatures are the average.
This planet has one side that faces the sun regularly and is certainly too hot, and another side that is completely neutral and is certainly too cold.
The only area where suitable conditions prevail is the border between these two areas.
By the way - both the 30 and the 12 are in the minus.

    Bear and Lion:
The telescope measured the speed of rotation around the parent star and not the speed of self-rotation.
The fact that it points a fixed side towards the mother star is probably deduced from the estimation of the age of the mother star and from the distance between it and the planet. Probably at such an age and such a distance - the tidal forces should have already stopped the round.

  27. Dobi - does rotate on its axis - in the same cycle as its rotation around its star - like our moon. And how do you know? The answer in the article: "The planet was discovered using the HIRES spectrometer...a device that also helped measure the planet's rotational speed."

  28. It's still not a good enough star [pleasant] . Our means are too limited and do not allow us to see the abundance of stars and life in the universe. But every day humanity is moving forward in the right direction.

  29. With the star similar to ours it might be possible for Ash to get there,
And is there a situation that means that our star will be destroyed in 2012 and the new star will be a sign of new life?

  30. Sabdarmish, in the golden zone - Goldilocks (Abby, maybe we need to fix this?) mean a distance from the Sun suitable for sustaining life similar to that on Earth, or even us - the gravity is similar, the type of star is similar, and the temperatures can potentially (at least in parts of it) also sustain For us, he does not contradict the existence of possibilities for completely different types of life, from those that might exist in Europe to those that are based on foundations completely different from ours, as much as they are scientifically interesting, it is not so certain that we will have anything to talk about or want from them.
Either way, when you want to find a life at such a distance, because the possibilities are endless, you focus on those that will be more similar to us.

  31. Due to its speed, does it mean that if we lived to it, our lives would be longer compared to our lives?

Because if I understood, the twin paradox proves it, doesn't it?

A bit confused, I'll try to sort it out in my head...

  32. Now all that remains is to succeed in bringing a probe there at half the speed of light, which would take 40 years, or even at a third of the speed of light, which would take 60 years, and see if there is life there.
For humans it would be a bit problematic to exist there for a long time because the star does not rotate around itself and one side is always in the dark while the other side is always in the light.

  33. A very problematic definition given the name "life zone"
Is there really no life outside this area?
What about Europe, which is far away from us, is there no life in it?
In general, any connection made between the sun as a source of life and energy and its planet is problematic, because the planets themselves emit heat without any connection to their sun. The earth emits heat and lava that can be a source of energy for life again independent of the sun.
Life is very durable and they will be able to form even in conditions that seem extreme to us such as enormous heat and pressure and they will be very pleasant for that alien that will develop there.
    Happy New Year
    Sabdarmish Yehuda
