NASA Administrator Charles Bolden: We Are Close to Discovering Life on Mars Dark finger-like channels appear and spread down slopes on Mars during late spring and early summer, disappear in winter and return again the following fall
Observations made by the MRO (Mars Rover) spacecraft revealed the possibility of water flowing on Mars during the warm months.
"We are close to determining that Mars may contain some form of life," says NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "The findings confirm that Mars is an important target for manned research."
The dark finger-like channels appear and spread down slopes on Mars during late spring and early summer, disappear in winter and return again the following fall. The repeated observations followed the seasonal changes of these recurrent formations on several steep slopes at mid-latitudes in the southern hemisphere of Mars.
"The best explanation for these observations is the flow of salty water," says Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona in Tucson. McQueen is the principal investigator of the High Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (HiRISE) on the MRO spacecraft, and is the principal investigator of the report on the regenerative flow published in Thursday's issue of the journal Science.
Some aspects of the observations still puzzle researchers, but the flow of saline fluid fits the features of the formations better than any alternative hypothesis. The salinity lowers the freezing temperature of the water. It is estimated that the salinity of areas with active currents warm enough, even in the shallow parts of the subsurface, to keep the water in a liquid state. This is a salinity level similar to that of the Earth's oceans, while pure water will freeze at the temperatures measured in these areas."
These dark lines are different from other types of formations on the Martian slopes,” says Richard Zurek, MRO science team member at JPL. "Repeated observations show that they spread further down the river, in the hot season."
The width of these streams is between half a meter and five meters, and their length reaches hundreds of meters. They are much narrower than the gorges previously discovered on the Martian soil, but in some of the places a thousand individual flows were observed. Also, while the bays are exposed on the cold side facing the pole, the slopes filled with these small channels face the equator.
The picture shows currents stretching and darkening on a slope facing the equator as taken from late spring to early fall. The seasonality, the distribution in the longitude lines and the changing brightness lead the scientists to hypothesize that it is a volatile substance, but there is no direct evidence explaining which substance it is. Conditions are too hot for carbon dioxide frost and too cold for pure water. This indicates the activity of salt water whose freezing point is lower. Salt deposits in large areas on Mars indicate that salt water was a common thing in the past of Mars. These observations suggest that salt water still forms near the surface today at limited times and places.
When the scientists examined the channel-covered slopes with the spacecraft's Compact Spectrometer (CRISM), there was no sign of water. The formations may dry out quickly or become underground flows at a shallow depth.
"These currents are not dark because they are wet," McQueen says. "They are dark for other reasons that we don't know at the moment." Flows created by salt water may rearrange the soil grains at the surface more or less in a way that causes the dark color. How these formations become clear again when the temperature drops - this is more difficult to explain. "It's a puzzle at the moment, but I believe it can be solved through further observations and laboratory experiments," said McQueen.
These results are the closest scientists have come to looking for evidence of water flowing on the surface of Mars today. Frozen water, however, was discovered near the surface in many areas in middle and high latitudes. Fresh channels testify to the movement of the slopes in recent geological periods, probably with the help of water. A constant drip of salt water is also visible on the outside of the Phoenix lander. If further study of the dark currents supports the existence of salty water, it will be the first place on Mars where liquid water has been discovered.

Certainly interesting, but contrary to what may be interpreted from the article here, I would recommend in the meantime to continue to be skeptical. They did not see or find water. We see seasonal formations that remind us of things that happen on Earth. There the situation is very different. This is another nail in the coffin of the old idea that Mars is biologically dead - but it is still not proof of anything. Now that you know the area well, you must go back and photograph there to try and capture an actual record of water, both in a visible light image and in a spectrometer that will show a wave dispersion that resembles sea water.
Even then I doubt if the spectrometer will indeed give clear values, if there is life there, because life will refract light differently than clean water. As for the nature of the refraction of the light of Beah Madimim, we still do not know anything.
I really hope that in my lifetime I will get answers (and samples!!!) regarding the existence of life on Mars.
These findings should light strong lamps in the research organization that should cause them to change the landing focus of the next probe.
