Evolution after all! / Dr. Assaf Rosenthal

The blue oyster Mytilus edulis lives in New England waters. Researchers have found the oyster of special interest because of the strong biological "glue" it produces, a glue so strong that it can be used to stick heavy objects to a smooth Teflon surface. Because of this unique feature, the oyster has been monitored for many years.

Until about fifteen years ago, the oyster existed in a natural balance in its environment. Some of the oysters were killed by natural "enemies" and others continued the life cycle, about fifteen years ago a new factor entered the system. "Asian crab, "Hemigrapsus sanguineus" is an invader/alien that probably arrived in the area in the balance waters of ships, found fertile ground for its needs and spread along the coasts. The crab has the largest and strongest pincers of all local crabs so strong that it was able to easily crack open the blue oyster. This is where evolution "came into action", in a short time, the oysters developed a defense against the invader in an "arms race" that if they had lost, the oysters would have become extinct, a thick and strong wall that cancer cannot crack!

It is worth noting the fact that fifteen years is considered a "nanosecond" compared to the ability of biological species to develop defense against enemies. It is also important to note that a thick wall means a much higher energy investment, i.e. conversion of means (at the expense of what?) to protection against a threat.

To test the meaning of the rapid development, the researchers exposed samples from two populations (northern and southern) of the oysters to the presence of cancer and it became clear that only in the southern population a thick wall developed. The (general) threat therefore develops the means of defense faster. The early familiarity of the (southern) blue oyster population with the particular threat gave it an evolutionary advantage that saved it from extinction. Of course, these oysters do not have "knowledge" in the way we understand it. The oysters with the thick shells simply survived, and these became the majority of the population.

A note for those who "know/think" otherwise - the deniers of evolution, a survey conducted in thirty-four countries revealed that: most residents of Europe, Japan, and Canada understand the meaning of evolution and in general accept the theory that says that the creatures living today, including humans, evolved from primitive creatures ) in the same way that evolution explains. At the bottom of the list - i.e. among the countries where evolution is less acceptable (along with Turkey) were the residents of the USA. A large part of them accept the Torah and the story of creation as language! So you are in "good" company.
