An achievement for the Israeli delegation in the Mathematics Olympiad: in the competition that ended today, (Saturday), in Colombia, the Israeli mathematics team won six Olympic medals: 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. The International Mathematical Olympiad included 103 countries, and at the end Israel was ranked 13th in the world, an impressive jump of 18 places compared to the previous year, in which Israel was ranked 31st. This is Israel's best achievement in the last decade. In 2011, Israel was ranked 23rd. In 2010, Israel was ranked 53rd. Israel recorded an impressive jump of 40 places in three years.

The Ministry of Education notes that the gold medal winner Omri Solan was ranked fifth in the world among the 600 contestants who competed in the Math Olympiad. The delegation was coached by Lev Radizoilovski

Members of the Olympic delegation:

  • Gold medal - Omri Solan: XNUMXth grade student (Rashonim, Herzliya).
  • Silver medal - Amots Oppenheim: XNUMXth grade student (Exemplary Commendation, Ramat-Gan).
  • Silver medal - Tom Calvary, XNUMXth grade student (The Green Village, Ramat Hasharon)
  • Silver medal - Nitzan Tor: XNUMXth grade student (Alliance, Haifa)
  • Bronze medal - Yoav Krauz: XNUMXth student (Katzir, Holon).
  • Bronze medal - Ofer Grossman - Israeli citizen, who recently moved to live in the United States.

The Davidson Institute for Science Education stated that the participants of the Israeli team for the International Mathematics Olympiad are graduates of the national Olympiads held at the Davidson Institute for Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science: the Gillis Olympiad for high school students, and the "Zota Olympiad" for middle school students. The members of the team participated in a two-week training camp held at the beginning of June at the Davidson Institute for Science Education, and in home training held in the three months preceding the competition. The team is coached by Lev Radziblovski, together with Prof. Dmitriy Novikov from the Department of Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

The science olympiad includes 4 fields: physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science. The achievement in mathematics completes an unprecedented summer from an Israeli point of view, when for the first time all 19 members of the Israeli Olympic delegations won an Olympic medal. (Mathematics – 6 Olympic medals, Physics – 5 Olympic medals, Chemistry – 4 Olympic medals, Computer Science – 4 Olympic medals).

The head of the Science and Technology Directorate, Dr. Ofer Rimon, noted that "after 3 years of hard and focused work, we are beginning to see real results that are reflected in the fact that Israel is becoming a dominant element at the top of the world. At the same time, we have not yet realized the full potential of the students and we must continue to invest the appropriate efforts and resources."
