The Olympic Hope (in mathematics)

In the summer, when Israeli athletes will compete in the Olympics in London, six Israeli boys will compete in Argentina in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Guess who is more likely to go home with medals.

After passing the two largest mathematics competitions in Israel - Zota Olympiad and the Olympiad named after Professor Gillis with honors, and after two grueling training camps, the students were selected to make up the Israeli math team in the upcoming Math Olympiad. The World Mathematical Olympiad, the IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) will be held this year in the coastal city of Mar del Plata in Argentina and will mark 53 years since the beginning of the Olympic games in mathematics. The competition is held between upper division students (grades 101-23) from 30 countries around the world. In the Olympics that took place last year in Amsterdam, the Israeli team won five medals, one gold and four bronze medals and was ranked 2010rd overall, a jump of 15 places compared to XNUMX and the best achievement in seven years. This year the team hopes to return home with more medals, with the goal being entry into the XNUMX best teams.

Israel's math team consists entirely of high school students in the honors frameworks of the Davidson Institute for Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. As mentioned, the team's participants finished with honors in two national competitions in which more than six thousand high school students participated, and were also the most prominent and outstanding in the training camps held by the Davidson Institute in February and at the beginning of the month.

This year's squad includes three medalists from last year, Yoav Krause from Katzir High School in Holon, Guy Reva from Leo Beck High School in Haifa and Konstantin Zabrani from Urban High School A in Haifa, who will be on the Olympic squad for the third year in a row. Six new "players" will be added to them this year: Amots Oppenheim, Omri Solan, Ofer Grossman, Ohad Klein, Tom Calvary and Daniel Hadas. Hadas, a XNUMXth grade student, celebrates joining the second team as he also represents Israel in the World Computer Olympiad, all from the Davidson Institute's special honors programs. Guy Reva and Tom Calvary also participate in the HT (young researchers) honors program in which they mentor the researchers of tomorrow at the Davidson Institute.

The team will be led by coach Lev Radziblovski, who himself participated in the Olympics between 1994-1996 and won two silver medals and a bronze medal. Together with him, the team will be guided by Dr. Dimitri Novikov from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science and students studying at the institute. Before the start of the competition on July 04, the team members will go through a two-week training camp at the beginning of June and home training throughout the three months until the flight to Argentina.

Dr. Kobi Lavie, director of the Shoham unit, the unit for the general public at the Davidson Institute - "Of the more than 70 activities held by the Davidson Institute for Science Education, the honors programs are our spearhead. Out of those programs, and with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Davidson Institute for Science Education was appointed to form the Israeli team in mathematics. Our job is to make the young people like science, and achievements in the World Olympics are part of the way to make the young people want to excel."

  1. To the best of my knowledge (especially as a parent): the team for this year's Computer Science Olympiad has not yet been finalized. In the math team (including bench players) that was detailed, there are other boys who are participating in the last phase of the computer science team's training (before the 4 members of the team are determined). For example, Tom and Ohad. Maybe someone else.

In any case, I don't envy the national team coaches who have to choose who will participate in the International Olympics and who won't: among the competitors for the limited number of places there are quite a few competitors for at least two teams that can bring good results!

  2. Correction of an error: Konstantin Zabrani from the XNUMXth City High School, Haifa and not as written.

Without yellow-skinned reinforcements from Communist China we will continue to falter.

Link table of results (as I imagined)
    www_imo-official_org__results_aspx

    A single underscore means “.”
    A double underscore means “/”
(Corrected spelling here is for technical reasons)

    Note:
If I understood the table of results correctly — Communist China has taken first or second place in the IMO Olympics for 15 years in a row. The Chinese don't have frivolous students like we do, they are serious and will conquer the world.
