A team of scientists led by Osaka University studied the ages of formation of 59 craters on the surface of the moon, which are about 20 km in diameter, using a space camera on the Japanese Kaguya probe.

This group of craters is evidence of an asteroid with a diameter of 100 km, which crashed into the moon 800 million years ago, and with it, most likely, at least (4-5) × 1016 kg of meteoroids, 30-60 times more mass than the one that created the crater Chicxulub, who dived into the Earth-Moon system. It is known that evidence of craters that were created 600 million years ago on the surface of the earth have been erased over the years due to erosion, volcanic activity and other geological processes. However, to learn about the imprint of ancient meteoroids on Earth, scientists focused on studying the Moon, where there is almost no erosion.
They studied the distribution of the formation ages of 59 large craters, which are larger than 20 km in diameter, by examining the density of craters at their rims, which are 0.1-1 km in diameter. One of the examples of this is the Copernicus Crater (which is 93 km in diameter) and the craters surrounding it (in the photo above). A density of 860 craters with a diameter of 0.1-1 km (marked in green) was examined to deduce the age of the Copernicus crater. Ryogo was studied by the Hayabusa2 probe, on a mission to collect samples from the asteroid, operated by the Japanese Space Agency.
From these considerations, the researchers concluded that an irregular shower of meteorites, following the collision of asteroids 800 million years ago, caused some of the fragments to fall on rocky planets and the Sun, others remained in the asteroid belt, such as the Ullia family, and the remains remained in an orbit that makes them near-Earth asteroids .
